Choque de Mundiales // Italia supera a Estados Unidos y es Semifinalista en Copa Davis. [Esp - Eng]

Luego de tanto nadar en teorías y fechas propuestas, se terminó realizando los play-offs de la Copa Davis en pleno arranque del mundial de fútbol; esto sigue afectando la promoción del tenis y de esta competición centenaria, debido a que por motivos más que obvios, la mayoría de la gente deja de ver o le resta importancia al torneo. Tal como estaba definido desde la fase de grupos en septiembre, los cruces de ayer nos plantearon un apetecible menú entre España y Croacia, Australia y Países Bajos; mientras que hoy fueron Italia versus Estados Unidos y Alemania vs Canadá.

After so much swimming in theories and proposed dates, the Davis Cup play-offs ended up being held in the middle of the World Cup; this continues to affect the promotion of tennis and this centennial competition, because for obvious reasons, most people stop watching or downplay the importance of the tournament. As it was defined since the group stage in September, yesterday's crossings presented us with an appetizing menu between Spain and Croatia, Australia and the Netherlands; while today it was Italy vs USA and Germany vs Canada.

Ayer tuve sentimientos encontrados cuando vi la celebración de la goleada propinada por España a Costa Rica (7-0); pero en el tenis caía la armada por 0-2 ante la fuerte Croacia. Los dos partidos de individuales entre Bautista - Coric y Carreño - Cilic, fueron suficientes para definir al rival de la sorpresiva Australia; que hizo lo propio con uno de mis equipos favoritos (Países Bajos). En lo personal fue toda una sorpresa, porque la calidad de los neerlandeses formaba un equipo compacto; no obstante, las raquetas de Alex De Miñaur y Jordan Thompson, fueron implacables ante Botic van de Zandschulp y Tallon Griekspoor respectivamente.

Yesterday I had mixed feelings when I saw the celebration of Spain's 7-0 drubbing of Costa Rica; but in tennis, the army fell by 0-2 against the strong Croatia. The two singles matches between Bautista - Coric and Carreño - Cilic, were enough to define the rival of the surprising Australia; who did the same with one of my favorite teams (Netherlands). Personally it was a surprise, because the quality of the Dutch formed a compact team; however, the rackets of Alex De Miñaur and Jordan Thompson, were relentless against Botic van de Zandschulp and Tallon Griekspoor respectively.

Alex estuvo con el pulso fino y con su ya conocida velocidad de piernas; y aunque fue Botic quien quebró al onceavo game para quedarse con el primer set; sería de Miñaur quien remontaba al segundo set y luego remataba en los games finales del tercero. Remarco allí, la presencia activa del gran Lleyton Hewitt como capitán de los "Aussie". Ahora los oceánicos disputarán el día de mañana, a la poderosa selección Croata, en la que no descarto una definición en el partido de dobles y eso significa una ventaja para los balcánicos con la dupla de Pavic / Mektic; aunque los australianos tienen doblistas de lujo (Kokkinakis, Purcell y Ebden) para enfrentarlos.

Y lo afirmo desde el punto de vista del favoritismo condicional de los norteamericanos, dado el buen momento que viven Taylor Fritz y Frances Tiafoe, aunque a Jack Sock le haya hecho falta la compañía de Rajeev Ram, quien increíblemente no fue convocado. Caso contrario del capitán italiano, que sí ha confiado en su dupla de veteranos y precisamente ellos, han marcado la diferencia en el momento de la verdad.

Lo primero que quiero destacar, es el espectáculo que dio el turinés Lorenzo Sonego ante el habilidoso Frances Tiafoe, en el que se planteó como un duelo vertiginoso y de jugadas rápidas; Lorenzo daría el golpe de break al 5to game y luego sostenía con autoridad, para acallar un poco al fanfarrón de Maryland. Que a pesar de haberle superado hace poco en el Masters de París, esta vez tuvo un rival con mayor motivación en los intercambios sobre la red. Ese primer set sería 6-3 en 38 minutos. A Tiafoe siempre es importante ganarle el primer set, ya que es un atleta que sabe cambiar los ritmos y se mete mucho con el juego mental del rival.

El punto para Estados Unidos llegaría con la raqueta de Taylor Fritz ante Lorenzo Musetti, en set corridos; eso nos llevaba a la definición en los dobles y los italianos que no contaban con sus mejores atletas, Matteo Berrettini y Jannik Sinner (ambos lesionados); echaron mano de los veteranos Fabio Fognini y Simone Bolelli (de 35 y 37 años respectivamente); quienes enfrentaron sin complejos a Jack Sock y Tommy Paul. Debo ser justo y recalcar los reflejos de estos experimentados atletas, que en la red han estado impecables y han tomado las mejores decisiones para ganar el primer set por 6-4 en 39 minutos.

Bolelli parecía convertido en pared desde el resto, convirtiendo cada saque difícil en un tiro sin respuesta, que se traducía en puntos importantes para su equipo. El quiebre llegaría al 9no game del segundo set, para llevar a los azurri a sacar por el match y Fabio lo cerró a lo grande. 73 minutos señalaban el doble 6-4 y la clasificación a semifinales. Me dio gustó verles celebrar esa especie de consuelo, porque Italia no pudo clasificar al mundial de fútbol, pero sí está (contra todo pronóstico) entre los 4 mejores selecciones del tenis mundial. Ahora los italianos chocarán el día sábado contra los inspirados canadienses.

Sin duda, las emociones de esta etapa final de la Copa Davis están en su punto álgido; y aunque no se pudo evitar que chocaran las fechas con las de Qatar, los aficionados del tenis apartamos un momento para seguir los partidos en los pocos canales que transmiten el evento del deporte blanco; Han surgido duras críticas contra los organizadores de este nuevo formato de la copa centenaria; pero mientras cada selección siga dando su mejor esfuerzo, el deporte seguirá superando cualquier adversidad. Faltan pocos días para conocer al nuevo campeón del tenis.

Undoubtedly, the emotions of this final stage of the Davis Cup are at their peak; and although it could not be avoided that the dates clashed with those of Qatar, tennis fans set aside a moment to follow the matches on the few channels that broadcast the white sport event; harsh criticism has arisen against the organizers of this new format of the centennial cup; but as long as each selection continues to give its best effort, the sport will continue to overcome any adversity.
