Alex Molcan supera el calor y al campeón del ATP 500 de Hamburgo. [Esp-Eng]

Enmarcados en la edición número 115 del histórico torneo de tenis de Hamburgo, estuve siguiendo la pista al vigente campeón del evento (2021) el español Pablo Carreño Busta, quien a pesar de haber tenido una destacada participación en el abierto de Suecia (perdió en semifinales ante Cerúndulo), mantuvo su buen ritmo e inició un exitoso debut en la arcilla alemana, avanzando así a los octavos de final del torneo que ganó el año pasado.

Framed in the 115th edition of the historic Hamburg tennis tournament, I was following the reigning champion of the event (2021) the Spanish Pablo Carreño Busta, who despite having had an outstanding participation in the Swedish Open (lost in the semifinals to Cerúndulo), kept his good pace and started a successful debut on the German clay, advancing to the round of 16 of the tournament he won last year.

Carreño llegaba este año como cuarto cabeza de serie (pre-calificado); y en su primer partido demostró sus ganas de defender el título, al superar al joven italiano Luca Nardi en sets corridos, con un contundente 6-2 y 6-1 en me la de una hora de juego. No obstante el día de hoy al salir a su segundo compromiso, se topó con un tenista decidido y bien plantado, como lo es el eslovaco Alex Molcan, jugador zurdo de gran condición física.

Carreño arrived this year as the fourth seed (pre-qualified); and in his first match he showed his desire to defend the title, beating the young Italian Luca Nardi in straight sets, with a convincing 6-2 and 6-1 in less than an hour of play. However, today when he went out to his second match, he ran into a determined and well-placed player, as is the Slovakian Alex Molcan, a left-handed player of great physical condition.

Considero importante resaltar que, Molcan está siendo entrenado desde hace algunos meses por su compatriota Marjan Vajda, el mítico coach durante 15 años del serbio Novak Djokovic; así que eso me da una idea de que la mejora de Alex no es casual. Estuvo muy bien en los abiertos de Marruecos y Lyon, ahora vuelve a pisar fuerte en superficie lenta, ante un jugador con mayor ranking y recorrido como Pablo (Carreño # 23 y Molcan # 48 respectivamente).

I consider important to highlight that Molcan is being trained for some months by his compatriot Marjan Vajda, the mythical coach for 15 years of the Serbian Novak Djokovic; so that gives me an idea that Alex's improvement is not casual. He was very good in the open of Morocco and Lyon, now he is back on a slow surface, against a higher ranked player like Pablo (Carreño # 23 and Molcan # 48 respectively).

El partido inició con Alex al servicio y lo primero que alerté fue la diferencia de velocidad entre su saque y el del español, ya que Molcan marcaba hasta 200 km/h, mientras que el de Carreño estaba entre 125 y 145 km/h (algo más que notable). Esta arma inicial le rindió frutos al esloveno de 24 años, rompiendo al segundo y octavo game; pero Alex no se conformaba con eso, dado que también mostró un impecable revés paralelo que incomodó mucho a Pablo, incluso tomándolo por sorpresa al dejarlo sin respuesta.

The match started with Alex serving and the first thing I noticed was the difference in speed between his serve and the Spaniard's, as Molcan was hitting up to 200 km/h, while Carreño's was between 125 and 145 km/h (something more than remarkable). This initial weapon paid off for the 24-year-old Slovenian, breaking in the second and eighth game; but Alex was not satisfied with that, since he also showed an impeccable parallel backhand that made Pablo very uncomfortable, even taking him by surprise by leaving him without an answer.

En lo particular, me gusta ver jugadores que no se encasillan en una o dos tácticas de juego sino que, ensayan tiros atrevidos para fabricar los puntos. Por ello, cuando vi a Molcan variar la distancia de su servicio a la T, me enganché aún más con el partido porque aunque era su primer enfrentamiento, en la previa todo apuntaba a la victoria del asturiano. No obstante, era su rival quien se aventajaba en los puntos al ganar ese primer set por 6-3 en 36 minutos de juego.

In particular, I like to see players who are not pigeonholed in one or two tactics of play, but try daring shots to make the points. Therefore, when I saw Molcan vary the distance of his serve to the T, I got even more hooked on the match because although it was their first meeting, everything pointed to the victory of the Asturian. However, it was his opponent who was ahead in points by winning that first set 6-3 in 36 minutes of play.

En la segunda manga la situación se invirtió, ya que Pablo comenzó a acertar más su primer servicio, también mejoró muchísimo su floja recepción del set anterior; entonces era ahora Alex, a quien le costaba sostener su saque, además se estaba viendo superado en los rallys y en las subidas a red. Con este giro de 180 grados me dije, ¿Estarán las aguas volviendo a su cauce? Pablo Carreño protagonizaba un resurgir y con 3 quiebres (dos de ellos consecutivos), igualó a set por lado con un 6-1 abrumador.

In the second set the situation was reversed, as Pablo began to hit his first serve more, he also improved a lot his poor reception of the previous set; then it was now Alex, who was having trouble holding his serve, he was also being overcome in the rallies and in the rises to the net. With this 180-degree turn I said to myself, "Are the waters returning to their course? Pablo Carreño had a resurgence and with 3 breaks (two of them in a row), he evened the set with an overwhelming 6-1.

Las cartas estaban echadas para el tercer set, el reloj apenas sobrepasaba la hora de actividad; y si Molcan sorprendió en el primer set, Pablo respondió con un sólido 6-1 en menos de 30 minutos. Lo que menos imaginé fue otro quiebre de Carreño al primer game, pero Alex no se amilanó por ello porque este muchacho jugó como en una final de campeonato ja,ja,ja. Su movilidad aumentó en defensa y si Carreño hizo tiros brillantes, él no se quedó atrás. El esloveno le puso corazón y recuperó el break al sexto game.

The cards were stacked for the third set, the clock was barely past the hour mark; and if Molcan surprised in the first set, Pablo responded with a solid 6-1 in less than 30 minutes. What I least imagined was another Carreño break in the first game, but Alex was not daunted by it because this guy played like in a championship final ha,ha,ha,ha. His mobility increased in defense and if Carreño made brilliant shots, he was not far behind. The Slovenian put his heart and recovered the break in the sixth game.

Las emociones de un gran partido de tenis no se hicieron esperar, porque con ambos contendientes igualados a 4 en la tercera manga, me daba esa impresión. Creo que a esos momentos se hizo presente el último factor que faltaba, el de la resistencia física. Lo digo porque la ola de calor en Europa, estuvo marcando los 44 grados en la cancha central del impresionante Am Rothenbaun de Hamburgo; y los atletas estaban notablemente afectados por esta condición ambiental tan extrema.

The emotions of a great tennis match were not long in coming, because with both contenders tied at 4-4 in the third set, I had that impression. I think that at that moment the last factor that was missing was present, the physical endurance. I say this because the heat wave in Europe was reaching 44 degrees in the center court of the impressive Am Rothenbaun in Hamburg; and the athletes were noticeably affected by this extreme environmental condition.

Ambos guerreros defenderían su saque a capa y espada, hasta llegar al desempate con el tie break; per incluso en esta instancia la paridad de puntos se mantuvo hasta el 5-5. Nuevamente el veloz ataque en carrera de Alex, que se deslizó para responder un drop shot en cruzado, marcó el principio del mini-quiebre. Considero que, haber atacado con tanta precisión en un momento de presión, le da mucho crédito al esloveno. Pero en este maravilloso partido, faltaba algo más y era su espectacular cierre.

Both warriors would defend their serve tooth and nail, until the tie-break; but even in this instance the parity of points was maintained until 5-5. Again Alex's fast running attack, which slipped to answer a crosscourt drop shot, marked the beginning of the mini-break. I consider that, to have attacked with such precision in a moment of pressure, gives a lot of credit to the Slovenian. But in this wonderful match, something else was missing and that was his spectacular closing.

Después de esa rauda carrera en pique de 8 pasos y deslizarse para cruzar la bola, vendría el siguiente movimiento de Alex. Un saque cruzado a la caja, pero en vez de largo, lo dejó bien corto; eso literalmente le rompió la cintura a Pablo, que a duras penas y casi sin balance, pudo pasarla con su backhand (a Carreño le fallaron las piernas en ese movimiento). Los dos estaban exhaustos, pero Molcan tuvo ese segundo aire que le permitía concretar lo que su mente le ordenaba. Alex esperó adelantado y desde allí acarició la bola, para dejar un drop shot sin respuesta.

After that fast 8-step pique run and sliding to cross the ball, Alex's next move would come. A cross serve to the box, but instead of long, he left it very short; that literally broke Pablo's waist, who with difficulty and almost without balance, was able to pass it with his backhand (Carreño's legs failed him in that move). Both were exhausted, but Molcan had that second wind that allowed him to do what his mind was telling him to do. Alex waited in front and from there he caressed the ball, to leave a drop shot without response.

De esta jugada analicé lo siguiente: fue la misma combinación de golpes que Carreño usó en el 5-5, saque abierto, recepción corta de Alex y volea en drop de Pablo; la diferencia fue la reacción desbordante del esloveno, que corrió en diagonal, para llegar y cruzar el tiro con gran clase. En cambio, cuando Molcan ejecutó esta misma fórmula, el español no tuvo la misma capacidad de respuesta, es más, se quedó parado desde el fondo, mientras observaba picar la bola en un estupendo match point. No era para menos, en ese infierno caluroso, el reloj marcó 2 horas y con 28 minutos.

From this play I analyzed the following: it was the same combination of shots that Carreño used in the 5-5, open serve, Alex's short reception and Pablo's drop volley; the difference was the overflowing reaction of the Slovenian, who ran diagonally, to arrive and cross the shot with great class. On the other hand, when Molcan executed the same formula, the Spaniard did not have the same capacity to respond, in fact, he was left standing in the background, while he watched the ball hit a great match point. It was not for less, in that hot hell, the clock marked 2 hours and 28 minutes.

El tercer set se prolongó en 1 hora con 22 minutos, más que los dos sets anteriores ja,ja,ja. Así se despide Pablo Carreño del torneo que ganó al año pasado y ahora Alex Molcan, se medirá en los cuartos de final de este viernes, ante el joven croata Borna Coric, quien ocupa el puesto 183 del ranking ATP. Ha sido una jornada llena de emociones y grandes resultados, los tenistas del circuito ahora deben enfrentar, el factor de las altas temperaturas europeas.; como si la exigencia del complicado calendario no fuese suficiente.

The third set lasted 1 hour and 22 minutes, longer than the two previous sets ha,ha,ha,ha. This is how Pablo Carreño says goodbye to the tournament he won last year and now Alex Molcan will face the young Croatian Borna Coric, who is ranked 183rd in the ATP ranking, in the quarterfinals this Friday. It has been a day full of emotions and great results, the tennis players of the circuit must now face the factor of the high European temperatures; as if the demands of the complicated calendar were not enough.
