Will Cody Gakpo be What Liverpool Needs?

Liverpool this season is really struggling to find their form. It can be clearly seen in the Premier League table sitting on 6th position, an unfamiliar position for the Reds since Jurgen Klopp's term. In fact, they have always been contending the Premier League and you will be amazed how strong this Liverpool squad is. Imagine these positions:

  • 2nd place PL 2018-2019 season (trailing just 1 pt behind Man City)
  • Champion PL 2019-2020 season w/ 99 points
  • 3rd place PL 2020-2021 season
  • 2nd place PL 2021-2022 season (trailing just 1 pt behind Man City)

From the four Premier Leagues, two of them were very close contested with Manchester City. The recent 2021-2022 season was one of the most entertaining Premier League final games of all. In fact, they were able to win with a huge margin in the Premier League 2019-2020 season.

This is why I have huge expectations for this signing. Cody Gakpo was an amazing Dutch talent and has displayed amazing performances in the World Cup. I bet this is the reason why Klopp is keen on signing this young winger/forward from PSV.

His signing was mainly because of the injuries incurred by Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz. Perhapss, Jurgen Klopp has plans on experimenting team line ups and a young, talented, and quirky forward can be a good option to fit into specific type of system. But for me, I believe he is mainly a replacement of Jota and probably a good partner of Salah on both wings.

I hope Gakpo will not end up like Darwin Nunez is doing in Liverpool. So far, his performances are poor to mediocre. Definitely not the expectations of Jurgen Klopp, where he has high hopes of the Uruguayan forward after the departure of their Senegalese star Sadio Mane who went to Bayern Munch.

What do you think? Do you believe Cody Gakpo is a great signing for the Reds?

Manchester United got sloppy and watched Gakpo slip out of their hands. I watched Gakpo in the world cup and I think he is a decent player but let's see how he performs this season.

I agree. In fact, Ten Hag was very upset not to land Gakpo.

I am starting to believe that Liverpool are making a change. They have a habit of changing wingers to center mids, I have a feeling that once the injured return we'd see a sort of 4231/433 from them with Gakpo moving somewhere in the center mid position.

Interesting analysis @amirtheawesome1. I have not seen the more technical side of the switches for the roles. My suspicion was mainly just because of the absence of Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota.

Losing the league with just a point to Man city twice can be so painful. Gakpo is a good player who showcase his talent well at the world cup but I don't think he will fit to Liverpool, he would have been a great signing for Arsenal

Arsenal have clear targets for the January transfers. Arteta has been very clear with his signings. Arsenal is now a top club again, he can attract the player he wants.
