My Actifit Report Card: April 6 2023 - Modern KPOP Started in 1992
Yesterday we talked about early KPOP band Key Boys. Today we jump ahead 30 years to Seo Taiji and Boys.
So Key Boys were active way back in the 1960s. Yesterday's song Let's Go To The Beach is from the mid 60s and is influenced by American Surf music and British Beat music.
Korean rock bands, referred to as "Group Sound" musicians, emerged, including HE6, K'okkiri Brothers, and Key Boys, who are best known for their hit song, "Let's Go to the Beach." The group sound musicians of the mid-1960s were heavily influenced by American and British rock of the same era.
The song was a hit so in a sense they were Korean popular music (kpop) but before it was called that. However,
South Korea was suffering under a totalitarian military dictatorship and the social atmosphere under the Park Chung-hee administration, which was still conservative and closed, hippie culture and rock music, which was representative of youth culture, was merely a target of suppression.
So like I said yesterday, they had some trouble with the governmental authorities.
Thirty years later Seo Taiji, who was previously in a Metal band called Sinawe, started a 3 boy group called Seo Taiji and Boys. Their first song from 1992 was called I Know. It blends Hip Hop and Freestyle and Metal into a danceable song with typical KPOP choreography that we still hear today.
