My Actifit Report Card: July 27 2022 - The Biology of Good and Evil

(Edited)

I watched an almost 2 hour video on psychology and sociology and ethology again today. I watched it once before but it talks about so many interesting things that I decided to watch it again and take notes.

My Notes - HIVE Exclusive Content!

This contains some direct quotes from the video and some paraphrasing, as well as my own thoughts.

What women want from their man - around 22 minute mark.
Women in general look for attractiveness but also resources in men. Women look for men with status and good socio-economic position. Or more deeply, what women want is competence in generating resources and generosity in using resources, and they use status and position as a marker for that. They want these traits so their chosen man has the resources to defend them and their children in the world, and provide a good life for their family.

Male versus female aggressive behavior - around 58 minutes
males tend toward physically fights whereas females fight socially using gossip, backbiting and destruction of reputations.
Female aggression scales on the internet and male does not. Online you can gossip and wreck reputations with a much larger participation rate in contrast to physical aggression which requires people actually physically being with each other.

Sentience, approach and avoid - around 1:28
Sentience is the ability to experience positive and negative feelings and sensations. Emotional sentience is associated with approach and avoidance. Approaching something, or wanting something to approach you, is in anticipation of a positive experience and produces the mental experience of looking forward to something. Avoidance is done to avoid a negative experience and produces the mental experience of anxiety.

I have often said in conversations with friends that everything in this world can be thought of as some variation on just two primary modes of existence - "come here" and "go away". In physics we have attraction and repulsion in charged particles and magnetic fields. In chemistry we have atoms and molecules that are attracted and repelled by others. In biology we have creatures that want others to come to them so they can eat them or work cooperatively together, and also want others to go away if they might be eaten by them or if they are inhibiting cooperation. Humans constantly strive to have others come to them, for conversation or sex or working together for a common goal, or they want others to go away because they want to avoid these things with that other person.

Online Interactions - around 1:40
On Twitter and online in general, "the fact that there is no direct confrontation between men on social media platforms facilitates a female style of antisocial behavior between men on social media platforms". See the male vs female aggression section above. I think we can all remember instances of people gossiping and attacking reputations on Hive and Steemit. Some of these altercations might have lead to physical violence if they took place in the real world where the people involved were together in the same physical space.

Final thoughts - around 1:44
Aggression and violence aren't the fundamental basis of social interaction. Reconciliation and competence and empathy and long term planning are more important. This is a more optimistic view of human behavior.

My Activity - Physical and Behavioral

My activity was almost 3 hours of water volleyball. One can observe a lot about sociology and aggression and cooperation by being alert to what is happening between the players. We have competition and aggression and conflict resolution constantly. It's interesting to see how different people handle these things.. My approach is to quickly resolve conflict in a way that is as fair to all as possible. I also use positive reinforcement to praise people when they play well while never using negative reinforcement or complaints when someone makes a mistake or behaves badly. Praise good behavior and don't react to bad behavior!

Have a great day!!! ❤👍❤
