It all starts with Curiosity; the underground neutrino observatory

This is the construction of the Jiangmen underground neutrino observatory that is in its final phase, this observatory is called JUNO by its acronym and has completed its acrylic sphere, which is the largest in the world, and is now assembling the stainless steel outer structure and also the photomultiplier tubes.


Juno is a multipurpose neutrino experiment designed to determine the mass order of neutrinos and precisely measure their oscillation parameters. JUNO's central detector is a 13-story high spherical container with unprecedented energy resolution. It has a wall thickness of 120 mm and weighs 600 tons.


And all this that you are seeing is 700 meters deep and is done because neutrinos can be key to solving the great mysteries of nature, such as what is the origin of matter, what is the relationship between the forces of nature, how the most extreme objects in the galaxy are formed, why we exist and much more.




The JUNO project began in 2013 and civil construction began in 2015. According to the plan, the facility will begin collecting data in August 2025 and its useful life is estimated to be 30 years.


The size of this entire structure is enormous, which is 700 meters below the surface. If there is a cataclysm, a giant asteroid, a giant comet or an atomic war, this would be a good place to take refuge.
