My Actifit Report Card: June 20 2024
I am a final year student studying animal production and health. Among most of the animals we rear and study, I find pig rearing special.
Pig rearing is a common farming practice around the world. Farmers raise pigs for their meat, which is popular in many countries. Pigs are smart animals that grow quickly(they have high feed Conversion ratio )and can eat a varieties of food, making them very easy to raise.
There are several species of pigs, but the most common for farming is the domestic pig, which comes from wild boars. Some popular breeds include Yorkshire, Duroc, and Hampshire among others. Each breed has its own traits, like how fast they grow or how much meat they produce.
Pigs are reared for various reasons such as provision of meat. Pigs are efficient. They grow fast and they give birth to a large litter size(10-13 piglets). This makes them cost effective for farmers. Though some people do not eat pork due to their religious beliefs but all the same pork meat is good for the body.
