La historia de la humanidad es tan generosa que nos deja como legado en su haber cantidad de personajes que han brillado de tal manera en su área que su luz e influencia llega incluso más allá de lo que ellos mismos pudieron imaginar. Este es el caso del conocido futbolista Pelé (nombre de Pila Edson Arantes do Nascimiento), facellido en los últimos días del año pasado (29 de diciembre para ser exactos).

Cómo muchos no tuve la fortuna de verlo jugar, lo único que de él he tenido acceso son documentales y algunos videos de sus partidos, pues, entre otras cosas su título de "Rey Pelé" le viene por su destacadísima actuación en el terreno de juego, sobre todo con su selección de Brasil con la cual logró tres copas del mundo (Suecia 1958, Chile 1962, México 1970).

Todo empieza con la fe

Desde su más tierna edad Pelé estaba decidido a dedicar su vida profesional al fútbol, aun cuando en su época no era tan bien pagado. Él mismo cuenta que por eso su mamá en un principio se había opuesto a sus deseos, no obstante, pudo más la figura paterna que ya había probado suerte en esta disciplina, pero lo que más pudo según mi análisis fue la confianza en sí mismo, lo que le dio la determinación necesaria para luchar por su sueño. Realmente era un joven con vocación futbolística y que por eso la misma destreza que en el campo con el balón demostraba le sirvió de guía en toda su vida.

Ahora bien, la mayor prueba de fe, no solo dependía de él sino de la selección brasileña del 58 que entre tantas otros jugadores veteranos le convocó a él, un joven de apenas 17 años. Este fue el primer gran paso que dio nuestra estrella, y todo gracias a que creyeron en él, "le tuvieron fe" decimos por aquí, una lección de que a veces es la confianza ese ingrediente que falta para que los talentos salgan a relucir.

Los talentos

Precisamente sobre el valor de los talentos también nos deja una gran lección el Rey Pelé. Hay muchos que, por ejemplo concuerdan en decir que no hay nada en el fútbol que no lo haya hecho ya este fabuloso jugador dentro del terreno de juego en su tiempo, lo cual tiene el valor agregado de que las condiciones del fútbol no eran las mismas (cancha, arbitraje, etc.).

Resalto esto de manera especial porque uno de los eternos debates que en el fútbol existe es que si las estrellas nacen o se hacen, para mí las dos cosas son igual de ciertas porque se puede tener mucho talento, pero si no se cultiva y cuida al final se puede hasta destruir una carrera (ejemplo, Maradona), así como también puede que no se tenga mucho talento, pero la preparación nos hace profesionales (ejemplo, Cristiano Ronaldo). Pelé cultivó su talento, se perfeccionó en él, y lo cuidó, quizá esta pueda ser una lectura (aunque sea subjetiva) de por qué termina su carrera futbolística en la liga de Estados Unidos, eligió conservar el talento en vez de emborracharse con la fama de un club europeo.

¿Qué significa ser el mejor?

Termino este homenaje al rey del fútbol, haciendo una breve disertación sobre esta pregunta, ya que si él es el rey de este deporte tan grande y ya se ha marchado, ¿Quién le supera o superará? Como ya otros han resaltado es una tontería querer determinar quién es el mejor, puesto que entre otras cosas es un anacronismo histórico, cada uno tiene su época, retomando la metáfora del inicio de este post cada estrella brilla en su firmamento.

No obstante, una lección incontestable que nos deja Pelé es que ser el mejor significa realizar las cosas lo más óptimo que podamos, que nos permitan las circunstancias y según las cualidades que tengamos. En su tiempo ser el mejor fue levantar tres copas del mundo y ser un factor importante para ello, hoy y mañana pueden cambiar los parámetros, pero la medida es la misma, pues somos nosotros mismos, está en nuestro ser y lo que estamos dispuestos a realizar y cómo lo hacemos, en este sentido, cada uno puede ser rey.

The history of mankind is so generous that it leaves us as a legacy to its credit a number of characters who have shone so brightly in their area that their light and influence reaches even beyond what they themselves could have imagined. This is the case of the well-known soccer player Pelé (name of Pila Edson Arantes do Nascimiento), surnamed in the last days of last year (December 29th to be exact).

As many did not have the fortune to see him play, the only thing I have had access to are documentaries and some videos of his games, because, among other things, his title of "King Pelé" comes from his outstanding performance on the field, especially with his national team of Brazil with which he won three World Cups (Sweden 1958, Chile 1962, Mexico 1970).

It all starts with faith

From an early age, Pelé was determined to dedicate his professional life to soccer, even though it was not very well paid at the time. He himself says that this is why his mother had initially opposed his wishes, but his father figure, who had already tried his luck in this discipline, was more powerful, but what was more powerful, according to my analysis, was his self-confidence, which gave him the necessary determination to fight for his dream. He really was a young man with a vocation for soccer and that is why the same skill he showed on the field with the ball served him as a guide throughout his life.

However, the greatest test of faith, not only depended on him, but also on the Brazilian national team of '58, which, among so many other veteran players, called him up, a young man of only 17 years of age. This was the first big step taken by our star, and all thanks to the fact that they believed in him, "they had faith" as we say around here, a lesson that sometimes it is confidence that is the missing ingredient for talents to come to the fore.

The talents

Precisely about the value of talents, King Pelé also leaves us a great lesson. There are many who, for example, agree in saying that there is nothing in soccer that this fabulous player has not already done on the field in his time, which gives him the added value that the conditions of soccer were not the same (field, refereeing, etc.).

I end this tribute to the king of soccer by making a brief dissertation on this question, for if he is the king of this great sport and he is gone, who surpasses or will surpass him? As others have already pointed out, it is foolish to want to determine who is the best, since among other things it is a historical anachronism, each has its own era, taking up the metaphor at the beginning of this post, each star shines in its own firmament.

However, an indisputable lesson that Pelé leaves us is that being the best means doing things as optimally as we can, as circumstances allow us and according to the qualities we have. In his time to be the best was to lift three world cups and to be an important factor for it, today and tomorrow the parameters may change, but the measure is the same, because we are ourselves, it is in our being and what we are willing to do and how we do it, in this sense, everyone can be king.
