Have you ever heard the term 'typecasting'? This is a TV and cinema convention where one actor gets strongly identified with a character –up to the point where they find It difficult to get job as anything but that role.

PLOT
The film starts with a nice and tough, but dim-witted bouncer called Doug Glatt at another day of work. While watching a Hockey game, he's interrupted by his boss, who tells him to stop slacking.
Checking Teenagers ID's, punching drunken brawlers unconscious and taking out the trash, we see a kind soul inside a bulldozer's frame. Someone who knows he's not living the life he wants.
This sense of inferiority is accentuated by the fact that both his father and his brother are successful physicians while he still doesn't know about his future.
However, all changes one night in a Hockey Minor League match, where Doug's best friend Pat begins trash-talking a player of the other team, who climbs into the stands and calls him "A F**ggot".
Glatt, whose brother is Gay, doesn't feel glad about this and easily beats the player up. This wakes up the interest of his hometown's local team coach, who offers him the position of enforcer.

After accepting, the coach sends him with his teammates at their training facility. Then, they see a man of 6 feet with skating skills equal to those of a 6 year old.
This brings laughter from the whole crew, who ask the Coach If he's sure about the decision. However, they realize Glatt's true potential when he knocks up three of them at a confrontation in the ice rink. Thing which brings a whole new respect for the newcomer.
After days and days of training, our protagonist becomes competent enough to not slide during a game, where, during the penalty minutes his moment to shine comes. The rival team's enforcer begins to provoke him and It quickly devolves into a fistfight where Doug comes out the victor.
After the public's uproar of appreciation for their new hero, Glatt's name begins to be recognized in his hometown's hockey circle, and a new opportunity would come his way. After seeing how much he has improved, the coach tells him that the team is too little for him, urging him to go see his brother, coach of the Halifax Highlanders, a minor league team.
His sole mission is to protect a highly skilled hockey prospect: Xavier Laflamme who, after 3 years is still in the minors. This due to his fear of being hit again after a concussion suffered during a game.
However, after coming into his new team, Doug sees the mess he's in. Big egos and partying every night are the norm in a shattered squad that hasn't seen victory a long time ago. Will Doug be able to fix all this? Will he lead them to victory and, maybe, a championship? You'll figure out If you see this great film.

We know right away that he is at best naive, but we grow to love our main character, someone who's too nice for the harsh world of hockey. Yet, his physical toughness and sense of responsibility make up for the intelligence he lacks.
Even when we know what's coming, we feel bad for him. Yet, when he triumphs we rejoice in his victory.
Xavier Laflamme (Portrayed by Marc-André Grondin)

3 years ago, he was one of the main prospects in the league. However, after a concussion caused by an ill-intentioned collision with Ross "The Boss" Rhea, he was never the same. He fears getting into high-speed maneuvers and dribbling because of his fear of being hit again.
An initially cynical character, Laflamme is what you would expect of a sports star in his decline: Boozing, Drugs and Women to distract himself from thinking of his fate. He even puts some resistance to the thought of Doug being his "protector".
In spite of this, he's forced to receive Glatt in his apartment, where, over the course of the movie his position shifts from one of deep resentment to one of trust and even friendship.
Eva (Portrayed by Allison Pill)

A young hockey fan with a pendant for sleeping with players, even when she's already in a relationship. She meets Doug in a bar, who gets a crush on her. After Glatt mistakes her kissing him for a green light to his romantical advances, she tells him the truth.
Even when the thought of them dating is impossible, she still feels something for our protagonist, a longing that only grows as she attends Halifax's games.
Ross "The Boss" Rhea (Portrayed by Liev Schreiber)

This veteran goon is the antagonist of the movie and Doug's Idol. He's a fierce player whose fists can destroy anyone in the ice rink, but outside he's a calmly collected gentleman who even gives a few words of advice to Doug.
A seasoned enforcer who is demoted to the minors after serving a 20 game suspension, Rhea and the St John's Shamrocks will be the main obstacle for the Halifax's dream of getting in the playoffs.
Summary

Esto es precisamente lo que le ocurrió a Seann William Scott, actor estadounidense conocido por encarnar a Steve Stifler en la serie American Pie.

Después de convertirse en un nombre conocido por su bobalicón papel revelación, Seann empezó a interpretar diferentes tipos de personajes, con personalidades que contrastaban con el Stiffmeister. Entre estos podemos encontrar:

Goon es una comedia deportiva con mucho corazón. Una que cuenta la historia de un hombre que encuentra su propósito en el frío coliseo de los minutos de penalti del Hockey.
Precisamente por eso vamos a analizar la grandeza de esta película, centrándonos en el núcleo de lo que la hace tan convincente: Su trama y Sus personajes.

TRAMA
La película comienza con un portero de discoteca simpático y duro, pero algo tonto, llamado Doug Glatt, en otro día de trabajo. Mientras ve un partido de hockey, su jefe le interrumpe y le dice que deje de holgazanear.
Verificando carnés de adolescentes, golpeando a los borrachos hasta dejarlos inconscientes y sacando la basura, vemos un alma bondadosa dentro del armazón de una excavadora. Alguien que sabe que no está viviendo la vida que quiere.
Este sentimiento de inferioridad se ve acentuado por el hecho de que tanto su padre como su hermano son médicos de éxito mientras que él sigue sin saber nada de su futuro.
Sin embargo, todo cambia una noche en un partido de la liga menor de hockey, en el que Pat, el mejor amigo de Doug, empieza a hablar mal de un jugador del otro equipo, que sube a la grada y le llama "Un Mar**ón
A Glatt, cuyo hermano es gay, esto no le hace ninguna gracia y le propina una paliza. Esto despierta el interés del entrenador del equipo local de su ciudad natal, que le ofrece el puesto de ejecutor.

Tras aceptar, el entrenador le envía con sus compañeros a sus instalaciones de entrenamiento. Entonces, ven a un hombre de 1,80 metros con habilidades de patinaje iguales a las de un niño de 6 años.
Esto provoca las risas de todo el equipo, que pregunta al entrenador si está seguro de la decisión. Sin embargo, se dan cuenta del verdadero potencial de Glatt cuando noquea a tres de ellos en un enfrentamiento en la pista de hielo. Cosa que provoca un nuevo respeto por el recién llegado.
Tras días y días de entrenamiento, nuestro protagonista se vuelve lo suficientemente competente como para no resbalar durante un partido, en el que, durante los minutos de penalti llega su momento de brillar. El ejecutor del equipo rival empieza a provocarle y rápidamente se convierte en una pelea a puñetazos en la que Doug sale vencedor.
Tras el alboroto de aprecio del público por su nuevo héroe, el nombre de Glatt empieza a ser reconocido en el círculo de hockey de su ciudad natal, y una nueva oportunidad le llegaría. Tras ver lo mucho que ha mejorado, el entrenador le dice que el equipo es demasiado pequeño para él, instándole a que vaya a ver a su hermano, entrenador de los Halifax Highlanders, un equipo de ligas menores.
Su única misión es proteger a una promesa del hockey de gran talento: Xavier Laflamme que, después de 3 años, sigue en las ligas menores. Esto se debe a su miedo a ser golpeado de nuevo tras una contusión cerebral sufrida durante un partido.
Sin embargo, tras entrar en su nuevo equipo, Doug ve el lío en el que está metido. Grandes egos y fiestas cada noche son la norma en un equipo destrozado que no conoce la victoria desde hace mucho tiempo. ¿Será capaz Doug de arreglar todo esto? ¿Los llevará a la victoria y, tal vez, a un campeonato? El gentil cabeza de chorlito en torno al cual gira la película. Un hombre eclipsado por el éxito de su familia, sin más ambición en la vida que mantener su trabajo fijo como portero de un bar. Tras una pelea en un partido de hockey, su vida cambia para siempre.
Enseguida nos damos cuenta de que, en el mejor de los casos, es un ingenuo, pero llegamos a querer a nuestro protagonista, alguien demasiado amable para el duro mundo del hockey. Sin embargo, su dureza física y su sentido de la responsabilidad compensan su falta de inteligencia.
Incluso cuando sabemos lo que le espera, nos sentimos mal por él. Sin embargo, cuando triunfa, nos alegramos de su victoria.
