Madrid Open: Simona Halep knocked out

Two time Madrid Open winner Simona Halep has been knocked out of this year edition after suffered a 3rd round defeat in the hands of Elise Mertens.

The 29 year old Romanian lost 4-6 7-5 7-5 to Mertens of Belgium in a game that lasted 2hours and 34 minutes.

Halep who won the title twice in 2016 and 2017 at the Caja Magica failed to go further and a 3rd has she faced and huge resistance in the Belgian who came from behind.

The two winner had his to say to her fans on social media after the loss.

Gracias Madrid. You will always be one of my favourite places on tour.
