The thawing lake and a strange surprise - Actifit: March 21 2022

I took a walk out to the lake this evening to have a look. I’ve been away on vacation for a week, and in that time all of the trucks and ice fishing houses were removed and we have had a warming trend, so the surface is melting!

I am fascinated by this process every year. What’s amazing is how long it takes. Most of the snow is gone now (although we are likely to get more). So it’s odd to see this massive sheet of bluish white, bordered by water at the edges.

But I do love the beauty of the lake in this in between season, as winter slowly makes its exit and spring… well, it won’t be here in full bloom anytime soon, but at least we don’t have to wear our heaviest winter gear every day now!

I took some pictures of boats and docks at the marina. I always find them to be aesthetically interesting.

It was about this time that I saw something strange out on the lake. A man was walking around out there! I could barely see him at first because he was on the other side. What was he doing?

I mean look at this. You can see that there is open water around most of the edges (much to the delight of the duck)!

I finally realized that the man was collecting items on the lake. He was walking all around the area where the ice fishing huts had been, and was scavenging items that were left behind.

He loaded the items he found on a child’s pull-along sled and came back across the ice to where his car was parked.

He was an odd character. I didn’t have a great feeling about him for some reason and decided to trust my instincts. So I walked down the path a bit as he trudged back toward my side of the lake, then walked back and just passed by on the other side of the road in a nonchalant fashion. I was at least glad to know that he had made it safely off the ice!

Would you trust a giant sheet of melting ice and go walking across like that when clearly everyone who is sensible has packed up and left?
