(ESP-ENG) Hablemos del dopaje - Icarus! [Opinión]
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
We are in Olympic times, in fact these games end today after three weeks full of sports to the maximum in all the modalities accepted by the IOC. But I think there will always be a cloud, an aura of doubt about the results and the possibility that certain athletes reach the point of seeking to improve their performance through doping. I say this because of a couple of things. The first is because of everything that happened with Russia a few years ago and the second is because I decided to watch ICARUS, a documentary that touches precisely on this issue and which became extremely sensitive.
For those who have not seen this, it tells the story of Grigori Rodchenkov, who was the director of the anti-doping laboratory in Moscow, one of the most important in the world (RUSADA) and which ended up being suspended by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). All this explodes thanks to the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics where it was proven that almost all Russian athletes were doped and that thanks to the corruption of Russia and its rulers managed to change the urine samples so that these could come out negative and thus deceive the whole world.
Doping more than a physical improvement for me is an indelible moral stain, it is cheating and taking advantage of the good faith of other athletes, dismissing all the hard work that others have done to reach the desired level of competition, it is a vile deception that the truth is hard for me to make sense of. One of the most relevant examples of this is that of Lance Armstrong, a cyclist who had everything, ability and physique to achieve whatever he set out to do, but decided to take the easy way out. He was accused by his own teammates to the point that he lost his 7 victories in the Tour de France.
There is something interesting and it is that Bryan Fogel, the director of this documentary, is an amateur cyclist and wanted to experience this. He decided to dope for a competition with the help of Grigori and came to a conclusion: doping does not work for everyone. Before doing it he had been in 14th place in that competition; after a few months with substances he returned to compete and was almost 30. He was injecting testosterone with a long cocktail of banned substances. Honestly, this story is a real eye-opener because it raises a sea of doubts about all this. The founder of the UCLA Olympic lab said it was very complicated to know if an athlete was cheating when it came to taking his samples.
And I talk about the sea of doubt because it is said that it is impossible to know since when the Russians have been doing this, it was known that for Beijing 2008 and London 2012 there were active doping. The strangest thing of all is that this world anti-doping agency did not want the Russians in Rio 2016 but the IOC decided that they would go, not all the athletes but a large number which caused great unrest in the sporting world. And what happened? - the Russians won 19 gold medals, one more than in London. I think that no matter how advanced the technology may be, the ways to hide these analyses will grow in parallel, "as the law is made, so is the trap".
The desire to excel either by personal or economic issues are leading a small number of athletes to deviate from the path of merit and effort in order to reach the top with shortcuts. This problem, for me, is far from over; although it is true that this issue was almost 10 years ago and the research began two years later, in 2016, I would dare to say that this evil continues to haunt the minds of athletes. So, is it possible to know for sure if in Paris there was any case of these? - I think that if there was it will be known but I also think that the doubt will always be in the air, it is not appropriate to point to anyone without evidence but unfortunately the odds show that at least one manages to evade. I leave the trailer in case you want to see it, it is very interesting.
