(ESP-ENG) La Premier League está viva.
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
This weekend things could have happened in English soccer that could have made the Premier League finish tighter than it did, but in the end it ended up happening what I would have thought nobody expected given the context and the teams that were facing each other. Manchester City and Arsenal met at the Etihad to try to define the standings, if City won they would be one point behind the leader, Liverpool, or if Arteta's team won they would equal Klopp's team; neither one thing nor the other, in the end it was a sad draw in what for me was a match that left us with a lot to do.
An ingredient that could be added to the whole atmosphere is that both knew the result of Liverpool who had won their respective match against Brigthon by 2-1, Klopp's team had to come back from Welbeck's goal after two minutes with a pair of goals from Luis Diaz, who is in a state of grace, and the ever-present and effective Mohamed Salah. With this, Liverpool reached 67 points while waiting for their closest pursuers to do the same. Personally, my expectations for yesterday's game were high, it was an opportunity to give a blow on the table and tighten the classification even more, but as the game went on, everything was diluted in a dull game that ended with only three shots on goal.
One of the most important attractions of this match was the fight between Arsenal's two great central defenders, Saliba-Gabriel and the almighty Haaland. The Norwegian did not hit the net once, he was nullified practically the whole game thanks to these two players who made sure that this happened. I have a problem with Haaland and it is that he is too much nine for me, in what sense? - I don't see him looking for the ball, he has to get the ball to his foot to push it into the back of the net. Yes, that way is what has given him the amount of goals he has, but it is still not very attractive and even less effective. And it's hard not to score goals in this City team with players like De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Foden hanging around in the box, but it has to be said that all this was Arsenal's merit.
The match started and the ball was always in City's control, with Guardiola's characteristic possession and high pressing they always had control of the match and we are talking about the fact that the Gunners had less than 30% of the ball. But this is normal because this is the way they play, on the counter, waiting for the opponent's lapses and setbacks so that through the flanks with Declan Rice and the Norwegian Ødegaard they can exploit the attack to make connections up top with Saka and the cobra Havertz. The thing is that in front of them they had a team that is very good at defending despite certain absentees in the squad, among them Aké who left in the first half due to a calf problem.
The reality is that it was a very tactical match, we must remember that Arteta was Guardiola's assistant for many years so the school he had is one of the best and that on the pitch you can feel that influence. Everything, or almost everything, was played in midfield until City decided to press the accelerator a little more but also without generating any danger, Raya had a quiet afternoon. It was a very horizontal game, those where possession is abysmal but in which there were no gaps for the filtered pass hence Haaland was just another spectator. I would have expected Julián Álvarez, taking into account how different he is from the Norwegian, perhaps the Argentine being more irreverent could look for more plays and generate more danger but it was not like that, Pep did not want to risk much.
As I said, what Arsenal did for most of the game was to run after the ball but with a very strong defense, I think it is the best in the Premier League as it is the least scored team in the league so it is not just anything. Points in favor is that Rodri is at another level, this player sees soccer in another way, he sees it at a speed that cannot be done by any other mortal; and on the side of Arsenal I think it was a mistake the game of Jorginho, the Italian player if I remember correctly almost did not touch it in the first half when the position in which he was lined up was expected to be more decisive.
In the end, no one was hurt, it was a bland match, a dull one, where chances and emotions were left to be desired. This makes the Premier League more open than ever to the point that with 7 games to go nothing is written yet and between the third and the leader there are only three points of advantage. It is crucial not to lose for any of them and looking at the remaining calendar it is possible that Arsenal will have it a little more complicated of the three. This will be exciting until date 38, we will see what the best league in the world has in store for us from here to there.
