Hace unos días se estrenó un documental, uno muy bueno la verdad, sobre el gran jugador y persona que fue y es David Beckham y eso me dio las ganas de venir acá a hablar un poco de lo que para mi y para muchas personas significó ver jugar a esta bestia. En el mundo han habido jugadores mediáticos, jugadores que han dado de que hablar, que han revolucionado un equipo y una ciudad pero creo que pocos han llegado a ser como Beckham. Tuve la suerte de verlo jugar desde su etapa más temprana en el Manchester United, aquel equipo que daba miedo y respeto dirigido por Sir Alex Ferguson, hasta el último partido de su carrera en el PSG por allá en el 2013 y puedo decir que hoy en día hay muy pocos con la clase que tenía el ingles.
A few days ago a documentary was released, a very good one, about the great player and person that David Beckham was and is, and that made me want to come here to talk a little about what it meant to me and to many people to see this beast play. Hoy en día me atrevería a decir que es más probable que cualquier jugador tenga esa habilidad.

Todo esto empieza en el mundial de Francia 98 cuando Inglaterra se veía las caras contra Argentina, un partido que de por si era de alto impacto y delicado por todas las cuestiones históricas y geopolíticas entre los dos países. Creo que eran los octavos de final por lo que la presión era máxima. Lo que ocurre en aquel partido hoy por hoy Beckham lo sigue recordando y es que en el calor del juego David tuvo un roce con el Cholo Simeone que al final terminó en la expulsión, sumamente injustificada de Beckham, para así dejar con 10 a Inglaterra todo el segundo tiempo. Al final los ingleses perdieron ese juego en penales y aquello fue una factura perenne en su vida.

Y fue tanto así que esa temporada, la del 99, lograron el triplete con aquella muy recordada final de Champions contra el Bayern en el Camp Nou que terminó 2-1 con ese par de goles in extremis casi al finalizar el partido. A destacar que ambos goles pasaron por los botines de Beckham.

Y si a eso le sumamos que estaba casado con una Spice Girl, el resultado era insostenible y eso amigos Ferguson lo notó. De hecho a él lo venden del Manchester porque se puso más fuerte, por fines publicitarios, y al tener más masa muscular se puso más lento y ciertas habilidades ya no eran las mismas.

Lo irónico? - fue un equipo muy disfuncional, ganaron una supercopa de España y ya está. Fue esa época cuando los merengues tuvieron como 3 entrenadores en una misma temporada. Hay que decirlo, no le fue bien en el Madrid a Beckham, nada bien. Al final, en su última temporada ganó una Liga pero después de haber sido una bastante terrible porque fue aquella en donde Capello lo apartó del equipo.

Después del Madrid se convirtió en un trotamundos, se fue al Galaxy lo que fue un desastre total porque la MLS de aquellos años daba mucha pena, la calidad era muy baja lo que al final lo llevó de préstamo al Milán para finalmente terminar su carrera en el PSG. Creo firmemente que David Beckham es de los mejores jugadores que han pasado por las canchas, cuando estaba en su mejor momento en el Manchester United era imparable, era realmente una estrella del futbol. Lo tenía todo, pegada, buen pase, velocidad, regate, visión de juego, fue un jugador muy completo que lo ganó casi todo. De repente la única deuda que pudiera tener es con su selección pero ni eso porque fue con un gol suyo que clasificó a Inglaterra al mundial del 2002 en un partido contra Grecia. Pasarán años para que volvamos a ver a un jugador como Beckham, un tipo que marcó una época como muy pocos jugadores han hecho a lo largo de la historia.

Gran atleta, siempre recordare su excelente pegada para los tiros libres mientras estuvo en el UNITED y en la selección de Inglaterra...ni hablar cuando formó parte de los galácticos del Madrid. Así es... En el Manchester fue cuando mejor estuvo, de los mejores cobradores de falta que he visto. Aunque lo más destacable de él es la mente, nunca se quebró a pesar de todo lo que le cayó.
