(ESP-ENG) El mejor final posible para una gran temporada // The best possible end to a great season.
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
The 2021 Formula 1 season came to an end and it did it in style: with great emotions, a lot of tension and controversial decisions; more or less like the whole racing calendar has been this year. If we wanted to put it another way, this race at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi was a clear and vivid summary of almost all the incidents that occurred throughout the season.
A season that left us great races, others not so much, come to my memory prizes like Silverstone, Azerbaijan, Belgium or the remembered Monza where not only the simple fact of racing was the norm but the accidents were the ones that set the tone. All this is accompanied by the immense competitiveness of the two great protagonists of the year: Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.
The question is that for this last race we arrived in conditions that were unthinkable in the middle of the season, for example, and that is that the two drivers who were fighting for the title were tied in points, something very rare and difficult to see. This seasoning would undoubtedly be special because the only thing that mattered was to win the race, there were no other options.
On Saturday there was the Pole Position which was won by the Dutchman with Hamilton in second place, in addition to the fact that the first would start with soft rubber and the second with medium rubber, a detail that is very important. Honestly no one knew what we could witness since, as I said, the track record of these two throughout the season was not something that had been very smooth.
Lights off and began what would be the last start of the year. Surprisingly, the British driver was ahead and overtook Verstappen, because yesterday Hamilton's car was "untreatable", that is, it was going very fast compared to the same Red Bull, during the race there was no chance that Max could even keep up with the pace of the Mercedes.
Was it a monotonous race? - a little bit; but then, how was it the best possible ending? - Well, because in Formula 1 nothing is written and it tends to be extremely unpredictable. As I told you Hamilton had an overwhelming pace, as the laps went by the more distance he got and Red Bull knew it to the point that Christian Horner said on the radio that "they needed a miracle" to make Verstappen take the race.
The distance was such that the Austrian team had to work as a team to achieve the results and their best tool for this was Checo Perez. What the Mexican did yesterday was INCREDIBLE AND IMPRESSIVE, he held off Hamilton for several seconds to give Max a chance to catch him up to the point of being almost a second behind the Briton. A piece of Verstappen's championship belongs to Checo, no doubt about it.
Still there was no way Max could catch Lewis until the "Miracle that Horner asked for" came true, with FIVE laps to go, Latifi had an accident and the Safety Car appeared. A SC that did not benefit HAM or Mercedes and what they expected was that it would be extended until the end of the race so that the Briton could win.
It was not and with one lap to go, the race was restarted. Friends, as a Formula 1 fan I can not explain what it meant to see that last lap, it was the culmination of a year of work and a fight of titans between the two best drivers that F1 has today; and all that reduced to ONE lap. Verstappen had soft tires since he changed them during the Safety Car, unlike Hamilton who kept the hard tires, this factor was the key.
Why was it key? - Because it allowed Max to overtake without problems, besides the obvious that because of the SC he could be next to the Briton. In conclusion, it was a heart-stopping lap which was the icing on the cake of a season that gave us everything. In the end there was also a bit of controversy due to decisions made by race control, but hey, this is always going to happen.
Max Verstappen wins his first world championship against what for many is the best driver in the history of Formula 1, Lewis Hamilton. Some of Max's data this season: he won ten races, 18 podiums, 10 Poles Position and finished with 395.5 points, a barbaric number and that beyond how the race unfolded was a world championship that he deserved more than anyone else.
For now we have to wait until March and the Bahrain Grand Prix to see again these cars flying on the tracks and start writing the history of a new championship, that of 2022. Here we will be impatient and with the same desire as always.
