Se terminó la temporada 2021 de la Formula 1 y lo hizo por todo lo alto: con grandes emociones, mucha tensión y decisiones controversiales; más o menos como ha sido toda el calendario de carreras en este año. Si lo quisiéramos decir de otra forma este carrera en el circuito de Yas Marina en Abu Dhabi fue un claro y vivo resumen de casi todas las incidencias que ocurrieron a lo largo de la temporada.
The 2021 Formula 1 season came to an end and it did it in style: with great emotions, a lot of tension and controversial decisions; more or less like the whole racing calendar has been this year. If we wanted to put it another way, this race at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi was a clear and vivid summary of almost all the incidents that occurred throughout the season.
Una temporada que nos dejó grandes carreras, otras no tanto, vienen a mi memoria premios como los de Silverstone, Azerbaiyán, Bélgica o el recordado Monza donde no solo el simple hecho de correr fue la norma sino que los accidentes fueron los que marcaron un poco la pauta. A todo esto se acompaña la inmensa competitividad que poseen los dos grandes protagonistas del año: Max Verstappen y Lewis Hamilton.
A season that left us great races, others not so much, come to my memory prizes like Silverstone, Azerbaijan, Belgium or the remembered Monza where not only the simple fact of racing was the norm but the accidents were the ones that set the tone. All this is accompanied by the immense competitiveness of the two great protagonists of the year: Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.

La cuestión es que para esta última carrera llegábamos en unas condiciones un poco impensables a mitad de temporada, por ejemplo, y es que los dos pilotos que estaban peleando por el titulo estaban empatados en puntos, algo muy raro y difícil de ver. Este condimento sin duda sería especial porque valía únicamente ganar la carrera, no había más opciones.

El día sábado se dio la Pole Position la cual ganó el neerlandés con Hamilton quedando de segundo, además de que el primero saldría con cauchos de goma blanda y el segundo con gomas medias, un detalle que es muy importante. Honestamente nadie sabía lo que podíamos presenciar ya que como dije, el historial de estos dos a lo largo de la temporada en pista no era algo que había sido muy tranquilo.

Luces apagadas y daba inicio a lo que sería la última partida del año. Sorprendentemente el británico picó adelante y le superó la posición a Verstappen y es que el día de ayer el auto de Hamilton estaba "intratable", es decir, iba muy rápido en comparación con el mismo Red Bull, durante la carrera no hubo chance alguno de que Max tan siquiera pudiera llevar el ritmo que llevaba el Mercedes.

Como les dije Hamilton tenía un ritmo arrollador, a medida que iban pasando las vueltas más distancia sacaba y eso los de Red Bull lo sabían hasta el punto que Christian Horner dijo por radio que "necesitaban un milagro" para poder lograr que Verstappen se llevara la carrera.

La distancia fue tal que el equipo austriaco tuvo que trabajar en equipo para lograr los resultados y su mejor herramienta para ello fue el Checo Pérez. Lo que hizo el mexicano ayer fue INCREIBLE E IMPRESIONANTE, retuvo a Hamilton por varios segundos para darle chance a Max de alcanzarlo hasta el punto de estar a casi un segundo detrás del británico. Un pedazo del campeonato de Verstappen le pertenece al Checo, sin niguna duda.
The distance was such that the Austrian team had to work as a team to achieve the results and their best tool for this was Checo Perez. What the Mexican did yesterday was INCREDIBLE AND IMPRESSIVE, he held off Hamilton for several seconds to give Max a chance to catch him up to the point of being almost a second behind the Briton. A piece of Verstappen's championship belongs to Checo, no doubt about it.
Aún así no había manera que Max pudiera alcanzar del todo a Lewis hasta que el "Milagro que pidió Horner" se hizo realidad, faltando CINCO vueltas, Latifi tuvo un accidente y aparece el Safety Car. Un SC que no beneficiaba a HAM ni a Mercedes y lo que esperaban era que se extendiera hasta el final de la carrera para que así ganara el británico.
Still there was no way Max could catch Lewis until the "Miracle that Horner asked for" came true, with FIVE laps to go, Latifi had an accident and the Safety Car appeared. No fue así y faltando una vuelta se reanuda la carrera. Amigos, como fanático de la Formula 1 no les puedo explicar lo que significó ver esa última vuelta, era la culminación de un año de trabajo y de una pelea de titanes entre los dos mejores pilotos que tiene la F1 en la actualidad; y todo eso reducido a UNA sola vuelta. Verstappen tenía cauchos blandos ya que durante el Safety Car los cambió a diferencia de Hamilton que mantuvo las gomas duras, este factor fue la clave.
It was not and with one lap to go, the race was restarted. Friends, as a Formula 1 fan I can not explain what it meant to see that last lap, it was the culmination of a year of work and a fight of titans between the two best drivers that F1 has today; and all that reduced to ONE lap. Verstappen had soft tires since he changed them during the Safety Car, unlike Hamilton who kept the hard tires, this factor was the key.
Por que fue clave? - porque le permitió a Max poder adelantar sin problemas, además de lo obvio de que por el SC pudo estar al lado del británico. En conclusión fue una vuelta de infarto la cual fue la guinda del pastel de una temporada que nos lo dio todo. Al final también hubo un poco de controversia por decisiones que se tomaron desde el control de carrera, pero bueno, esto siempre va a suceder.
Why was it key? - Because it allowed Max to overtake without problems, besides the obvious that because of the SC he could be next to the Briton. In conclusion, it was a heart-stopping lap which was the icing on the cake of a season that gave us everything. In the end there was also a bit of controversy due to decisions made by race control, but hey, this is always going to happen.

Max Verstappen gana su primer campeonato mundial ante el que para muchos es el mejor piloto de la historia de la Formula 1, Lewis Hamilton. Algunos de los datos de Max en esta temporada: ganó diez carreras, 18 podios, 10 Poles Position y terminó con 395.5 puntos, una barbaridad de números y que más allá de como se desarrolló la carrera era un mundial que se merecía más que nadie.
Max Verstappen wins his first world championship against what for many is the best driver in the history of Formula 1, Lewis Hamilton. Some of Max's data this season: he won ten races, 18 podiums, 10 Poles Position and finished with 395.5 points, a barbaric number and that beyond how the race unfolded was a world championship that he deserved more than anyone else.
Por ahora nos toca esperar hasta Marzo y el gran premio de Bahréin para volver a ver estos autos volar en las pistas y empezar a escribir la historia de un nuevo campeonato, el del 2022. Aquí estaremos impacientes y con las mismas ganas de siempre.
