ueno in bloom : March 28 2025

1000035277.jpg

oh those white things from afar are sakura trees with blooms. very pretty, but i hope you haven't grown tired of it. i know that i have been featuring cherry blossoms heavily 2 or 3 days ago. but i really had no clue that they were already blooming and just accidentally discovered that they were. but i guess in this season, that should have been expected. ok let me start.

ueno park (上野恩賜公園)

1000035222.jpg

4 days ago, i reached this park as the last pitstop for my nightwalk. back then, only the sakura trees right at the entrance were in bloom; the trees at the main corridor were still budding. food stalls were set though and lanterns were in place. so tonight i have planned to revisit the park in the hopes of seeing some activities at the main grounds.

fountain area food stalls

1000035224.jpg

1000035226.jpg

initially noticed some crowds, i knew that the food stalls were open. people were having a great time drinking and eating. it was so fun seeing them have a great time. but it seemed that i was too late for the program. i saw a mascot, but that was the only thing i saw which could have meant that there was some sort of a program. i toured the whole food area until i finally decided to leave and continue with the walk.

the sakura corridor

1000035227.jpg

1000035287.jpg

boom! there were more crowd at the distance taking pictures of a sakura tree in bloom. i thought that that was a one off, it was a singular tree and here i thought that it was another early bloomer. but then there were still more people.

1000035240.jpg

1000035241.jpg

and more blooming sakura trees came into view. one whole stretch of road, the sakura corridor, was full of cherry blossoms. and people were busy talking pictures of them. it was no longer allowed to lay mats along this main corridor, so people took advantage of the sides. although those areas were a bit dark, they were having a picnic and letting loose. it was unfortunately hard to take pictures of the dark area.

(i am submitting the first of the two pictures above to #aroundtheworld contest. you better check out the impressive entries submitted to that contest as well.)

1000035285.jpg

1000035231.jpg

this light up was really a big event and i am just glad to have witnessed it this time. the soft yellow lights were also perfect and people were enjoying it as much. i did said that hanami or sakura viewing is a big event in japan. and this was proof of it.

1000035237.jpg

1000035238.jpg

here are some more close up photos. i continued walking to the main entrance where the initial sakura days ago were blooming.

entrance area

1000035244.jpg

1000035245.jpg

it was as crowded if not more. food stalls were on the sides and tables and some chairs were at the center. and this lantern wall was finally lit. i took an unlit photo of this 4 days ago. and i thought my adventure would end, that was so wrong.

shinobazuno pond area

1000035253.jpg

1000035254.jpg

i went down some steps at the side heading towards the pond area. that area was crowded as well. so i was wondering what was in there. there was a temple in the middle and there were a couple of sakura. food stalls were also present.

1000035261.jpg

1000035264.jpg

oh i was proven wrong yet again, another foot path was full of sakura. there were no lanterns over here but there were pond waters. it was another charm all on its own.

1000035265.jpg

1000035271.jpg

here are more pictures. my fingers were busy taking shots.

1000035272.jpg

people were also as busy as me. it was just unfortunate that the sky was not cooperating at all. forecast tonight was rain, so i was pretty sure that this rain will fall soon.

1000035274.jpg

1000035275.jpg

this sakura tree seemed to be still intact. the flowers were in clumps, this could probably be another variety. it was more fluffy and more clumpy.

1000035273.jpg

1000035276.jpg

i finally took a photo of some people sitting on the sides. they were just drinking or eating food bought from the stalls. all smiles and all laughs, these were mostly office workers. it was a friday after all and they were probably in party mood.

1000035283.jpg

let's have a moment of silence for this couple enjoying the view and each other's company. i am not sure if you noticed or if it was captured in the other photos but there were so many couples in the crowd. i have never felt more alone than this moment.

ueno toshogu shrine area

1000035288.jpg

back up the main park area, i decided to take a side trip. in the past years i remembered that the shrine area also had sakura trees and some stalls. and i was right! but then i was late. the stalls were now closed.

1000035295.jpg

1000035299.jpg

even in hanami season, food stalls close early. the limit seemed to be 9pm. i was happy of that though, i had the whole area to myself. it was deserted and i never could have been happier. it was still hard to take close up pics of the flowers though. for one, people are prohibited from touching the branches and the flowers. and it was windy that night making everything jiggle and wiggle.

1000035302.jpg

this was the shrine and i only took this picture from outside the gates. good thing that the gate had large enough gaps for my phone cameras. that cloudy sky was just unfortunate for the flowers.

1000035306.jpg

1000035307.jpg

on the way out, i decided to use this side path to a restaurant. that was just a lovely view.

finally heading out

1000035319.jpg

i had too many sakura pictures that i finally had to stop. taking pictures was easy but choosing which to post will prove to be hard. and did i mention that there were so many couples in the crowd?

1000035320.jpg

1000035321.jpg

i was on my way out, these are the final pictures taken in the park. these random sakura trees planted in random places of the park. you really see them everywhere.

back road

1000035327.jpg

1000035329.jpg

i was finally out! i had so much flower photos. and here i was still taking more. but i am pretty sure that these were not cherry blossoms, these were taken from a patch of shaped bush walls. peach? plum? sakura not likely. maybe the wild varieties?

1000035332.jpg

this back road was beside a cemetery though, not for the faint of hearts. and it was deserted. alone near a cemetery was not something i booked. i have never passed this road before but i was familiar with the surrounding area, passing here near a cemetery is not a problem. i was outside, no need to worry.

1000035333.jpg

and i was finally back to a familiar path.

now as i was checking my entry, i wonder if people will ever reach this part. that bombardment of sakura must have really fed you up. i also admit that this was a bit too much. but i really hope you felt that festive atmosphere as well.

as always, AMPING KANUNAY!
