brains with might : September 10 2024
before anything, i have finally accomplished something today, i have finally started packing. and it is all inside this orange luggage for now. it was full in weight (around 22 kg), but there were still room inside. those i filled with air packs instead. after the packing, i went to the gym for a treadmill while enjoying a tv show. and that is our topic for today.
the program
it was quiz for high school students of teams of three from different schools throughout japan. but it was no ordinary quiz as i found out later. the show has already started when i tuned in, i'm not quite sure how the beginning went through.
x or o
the first segment i saw was a true or false question. the students were asked questions, then they ran off to two portals with an x (false) and an o (true). they will jump through this portal and if the answer is correct, they will land on a regular foam bed. but if they got it wrong, they will land on mud. from this, they will gather 8 teams. the 8th team was pretty heartbreaking to qualify. the remaining teams got each question wrong for 2 cycles and ended up having to qualify by rock-paper-scissors. this was heartbreaking, to have prepared for long but end up failing by fate. tears were shed at this point.
the bridge race
the next day, they divided the teams in groups of two. each team will hear the question on headsets at each end of a rather long hanging bridge, the 400 m mishima skywalk. when they are confident with their answer, they will run to the center of the bridge where the buzzer is located, and answer. this part of the game was really brutal, you may run off first but still reach the center last for slow running time. who would have thought that brainy students will be made to do physical activities. we got 4 qualifying teams out of this.
the shinkansen lucky-loser
out of the four non-qualifiers, another match was made where the winner becomes the 5th qualifier. the shinkansen was used this time. all the four teams road a shinkansen and stopped at one station platform where they were asked questions, the first two teams will return inside the shinkansen and continue the ride to the next stop. then and there, the losing two teams were left on the train platforms. on the next stop, the two teams were asked one question and the winner gets to decide which of two side-by-side shinkansen to hop on, only one of which will run to the next destination, whoever is left is eliminated. this was very unfortunate, the team who got the correct answer hopped on the wrong shinkansen and was left out of the competition. again by fate, fate decided who went on. the last eliminated team had the most tears so far.
the temple run
the next day, the teams were transported to this old temple in the middle of the forest and there where three buildings. the first one is on top of a hill, the questions will be read out here. but the questions are coming from a pool of topics posted in two locations downhill, the closer one had harder questions with chances of getting topics without any question. and the farther had easier questions. one team member runs downhill, gets a topic, runs back up, and gets to answer a question if there was any for that topic. this was the hardest to watch, stamina was very much required. one team got a wrong answer the first time, ran back and grabbed a topic which unfortunately had no question, and then ran back out for the third time. they got eliminated. another team had a member who had leg crutches so his teammate had to do the running for him. sadly, he answered it wrong which forced the other to run again. this got him bad, he blamed himself for that wrong answer and was crying the whole time. i guess he didn't want his members to suffer more because of him, thankfully he got the 2nd question correctly and they entered the finals. three teams made it to the finals after this round, a very hard earned one.
sadly i did not view the last round, i got out of the gym. all i knew was that it was held in okinawa. these students get to travel because of this show. but one thing was very prominent, that too must also be physically challenging. the others surely were, somehow stating that brains is nothing without the body. the body must also be exerted and not just the brain. these japanese shows are so unique in making shows like this. i wonder how big the cash prize is, or is this all for fame? i am left to wonder.
as always, stay safe.
