a day spent relaxing at a super public bath: July 14 2024

avatar

this is how it looks at night with all its lanterns lit bright.
welcome to a super sento or a super public bath in toyosu.
toyosu is home to the olympic village built for the tokyo 2020 olympics, not that you can do anything about your fantasies in it, but that was just a random fact.
the olympic village is now a private condominium complex.

tokyo toyosu manyo club (東京豊洲 万葉倶楽部)

it is a super sento, that means that there are other activities you can do inside aside from bathing.
the place is also conveniently located beside the new fish market, the successor of the old one in tsukiji.
all fish market stuff have been relocated in toyosu including the tuna auction, so after witnessing that, you can try out relaxing in manyo club.
you can check out this public bath's website for more details in here.

old edo style shops

of course we went there in the afternoon when the sun was still up, not that there was much sun for it was cloudy for most parts that day.
we ourselves were in for the surprise, it was our first time to be here.

before you enter the public bath, there was a common area where you can enjoy food and some events.
foot traffic in this area was heavy which included people taking pictures of the place itself.
this common area was designed to resemble old cities in tokyo, complete with a watch tower, very instagram worthy.
food was very much appealing as we passed by but we came there after having lunch and dessert, there was no more room for another round of food.
it also had an indoor alley with the same concept, old style streets and shops.
it was just fun to watch.

the bathing experience

so we entered the club, they provided an ic bracelet once you enter.
this bracelet will be used for all your spending inside the vicinity, very convenient.
payment will be done upon exit, so just be careful not to overspend inside.

now, they provide some clothes that you can use inside the vicinity.
you are free to choose between a yukata (japanese summer kimono) or a jinbei (japanese two piece wear of a top and pants), we chose the latter so we can move around easily.
you can head to the changing area to change into your chosen outfit.
of course males and females have separate areas, and this changing area has the bathing area beside it.
people inside are already in the nude even in the changing room.
so for those not used to nudity, this is the moment of truth.
just prepare your eyes and body, you will be like them in a short while.
so sorry for the lack of pictures but no picture taking is allowed inside.

the bracelet they gave also indicates your personal locker for the day.
large bath towels and small face towels are stacked inside for your usage.
the changing room also had an area for drying up your hear complete with hair dryers, mirrors and sinks.
they also provided toothbrushes, hair combs, face care products, cotton swabs among other things.
this will be used after your bathing of course.

on to the wet area, as a proper hot bath etiquette, one is required to at least rinse off the dirt from your body before dipping in the hot pools.
the shower area has lines of open cubicles complete with shampoo, conditioner, body and face soaps.
take a bath as you usually do.

and now the wet area amenities, hot pool indoor had waters coming from yugawara hot spring.
in fact, the name of this establishment, manyo was derived from a park in the yugawara hot spring town.
the indoor area also contained both a dry and mist salt sauna, and a cold pool directly outside.

the outdoor area had lots of lounge beds lined up in one side, and a very long out door pool designed with rocks.
the waters in here were directly transported from hakone hot springs.
and the outdoor area had a clear view of the river and surrounding buildings in the vicinity.
it was such a romantic place specially at night when all the building lights are on.

the waters in these two pools were transported daily from the two sources, and since they are natural hot spring waters, they are believed to cure certain diseases.

dinner

all those hours spent in the hot waters will eventually starve you at some point.
it is best that you head to the restaurant area before the usual eating times to avoid the long queues.
i suppose this establishment is known for the buffet but we opted the normal restaurant.
they had all sorts of japanese food, i chose some cold ramen and gyoza.
blood orange sour to complete the meal.
you will definitely not starve in this super sento.

relaxation room

after dinner, it was time to explore the other rooms in this establishment.
as an establishment aimed for relaxation, they had all sorts of massage services available.
the wet area had a korean style massage, there were massage chairs at 500 yen for 15 minutes, and most importantly, they had massage therapists for all types of massages from head to foot.
aside from this, they also had bedrock bath for more heat induced sweating.

we headed to the common lounge rooms and napped for a while.
you can watch some tv shows or even read manga in other well lit rooms.
i was enjoying this choir type singing competition show the whole time.

foot bath

i have written so much but we are not yet done.
at the roof top is a foot bath with a 360 view of the whole vicinity.
we can also see some of these view from the outdoor onsen area, just imagine having this view while naked submerged in hot waters.
this time, only the feet enjoys the hot waters but you get to talk with your friends from the other gender.

some tall well lit buildings

night view outside

we finally headed out after dipping in the hot spring waters for the second time.
hot spring waters were addicting, specially to me who was having some leg aches that day.
we headed out the same way we came in, the edo styled shops were in view again.
this time, only a few people were roaming.
lanterns were now lit adding a more authentic feel and more instagram worthy mood.

1000025027.jpg

relaxed and refreshed, we headed home happy and joyous.

nothing beats the natural hot springs but those are usually in far off places.
the next best thing would be super sento with all convenience and relaxation amenities in one place.

hope you have a relaxing day.
as always, stay safe.

Super nice!! Didn’t know about the edo inspired shops outside. Those look cool especially in the night!
Seeing that you were able to acquire seats in the lounge area, I’m guessing not a lot of people inside the establishment? Or maybe they’re all gone? Or perhaps it’s usually like this in the super sento during summer? hehe

Anyways I enjoyed reading and absorbing all the information. Next time I’ll be sure to go there!

I think it would be too embarrassing to use a public bath even if women & men are in separate areas. 😬 But I would join you for dinner! 😋

you get to have a face towel to cover some parts though. i often joke with friends that if they don't know what to cover, better cover the face.
jokes aside, the hot waters will make you forget the embarrassment.

What a wonderful experience! The hot bath must be very relaxing. I think I would fall asleep after the onsen and very famished when I woke up.
This tradition lifestyle is so healthy!
