shop hopping and the verdict is...: June 15 2024

oh what a great day it is to be outside! just look at that blue sky and you will surely be inspired to go out. and that is exactly what i did! saturday is fun day, is it not? what do you guys usually do on a saturday? here is one of my crazy calorie filled saturday!

protein overload

we saw this place recommended in instagram and we went there since it was accessible. the place was in shibuya, one of the trendy busy and fun districts of tokyo. the restaurant was called kinniku shokudou, a great name for a restaurant of this kind actually. the restaurant specializes in protein rich food, food good for the muscles.

well if that did not connect, allow me to elaborate further for the non-japanese learners out there. kinniku or 筋肉 means muscles and shokudou or 食堂 means restaurant, so it is the muscles restaurant after all. it is a quaint small place with quite a charm to it; they serve a shot of protein drink for starters, isn't that unique? and a little bonus, all the staff were toned adding to the literal appeal of the place. if i weren't too shy, i would have asked their biceps and shoulder routines.

so here were the orders. i got the chicken and hamburg set: juicy chicken paired with a juicy hamburg steak. you can cook the hamburg further on that very hot black metal thing on the side. and my verdict? it is very tasty! we also got an egg omelet, this i am not a huge fan of. it was a bit bland to be an omelet. my other friends got chicken and salmon, and chicken and swordfish. salmon is something i cook at home so there was no surprise on that food, but swordfish is something i haven't tried. swordfish is called kajiki in japanese and my friend said that it was a bit chewy. i would have loved to taste that but i was shy to ask.

in total, the place was a hit and miss. that omelet spoiled the experience a bit. i guess you have to try it with some of the sauces on it's side to enjoy the food more or probably the greens would give it more flavor, i don't know. if you do come here, take any of the chicken meals and you will probably have a good time.

baby baby shark

now that lunch is over, we were on the hunt for desserts. not complaints on my part, and i was even glad that the dessert place was somewhere further from the restaurant. shark coffee was the second place we went to, the first choice only had toasts and my companions were in search for cakes. this cafe happened to be on the opposite side of the road. it was vegan friendly, and alarm bells were ringing in my head.

this little shark greeted us by the waiting station. very very cute not to notice and not to take pictures of. now to the food, i got their blended coffee and vegan carrot cake. the coffee were good, but the carrot cake was sadly a bit dry, and this was what i worried initially. i know that vegan food can also be good but there is a wider margin for it to go wrong, in my opinion. dessert moist comes from butter but butter is not vegan, so they probably used a different type of butter but sadly it did not gave the same moistness that traditional butter offers. the taste was good but i could not get over the dryness, i sadly joked to my friends that it seems like i was eating the desert instead of desserts. my other friends had this choco twist (delicious), and lemon cake. the lemon cake was a bit sour but i still liked it, and it was not dry which means that vegan food can be good. that chocolate cake was also good, if it weren't then this cafe would immediately fail just for making a mess out of a fan favorite chocolate cake. and this almond cupcake? hmm, also suffered the same fate as my carrot cake, a bit on the drier side.

my verdict? i had fun but that was because of the company i am with. if you do decide to come here, the safer choice is the best choice! go with typical cafe favorites (chocolate cakes, etc), they would have perfected this. or just enjoy a cup of coffee. and make sure to bring your friends with you to enjoy the ambiance. perfect place for small talks.

dinner at a yakitori

after hours of shopping (shibuya is also a shopping district, did i not mention?), we settled with a fan favorite torikizoku. it is such a dependable place, delicious grilled skewers at an affordable price. they also serve alcoholic drinks perfect to quench the thirst after a long day of shopping. expect a noisy environment inside this shop, it is the energy filled type of noise which encourages you to keep on munching, chugging, ang chattering.

the verdict is a massive yes! the liver skewers were my favorite but the others were also good. if you were looking for silence, this is not the place for you. if you were looking for a right by the street tent type of experience, this is also not for you. fine dining is also not the description for this place. but if you are just looking for a good time, then consider this place.

and the night ended with a darts game. if cigarettes were not allowed then this would have been perfect. i know that this is just wishful thinking. so i am ending this entry with a win from yours truly.
