After more than twenty years teaching at the college level, you realize there is one or two of your pupils in every High School in town. If you built good relationship with your students, as I think I did with mine, they (who are now your colleagues) will tell you about their struggles, their triumphs, their frustrations, and their dreams.

Después de más de veinte años enseñando a nivel universitario, te das cuenta de que hay uno o dos de tus alumnos en cada escuela secundaria de la ciudad. Si construiste una buena relación con tus alumnos, como creo que hice con los míos, ellos (que ahora son tus colegas) te contarán sobre sus luchas, sus triunfos, sus frustraciones y sus sueños.

Most of my students became even better professionals. They do things I don't think I have the stomach to do. They are passionate about their jobs; they love their students as if they were their children; they devote time, money, and put their own mental and physical health on the line so that their students keep dreaming. More importantly, they do all that under the most precarious conditions.

La mayoría de mis alumnos se convirtieron en mejores profesionales. Hacen cosas que no creo que tenga el estómago para hacer. Les apasiona su trabajo; aman a sus alumnos como si fueran sus hijos; dedican tiempo, dinero y ponen en juego su propia salud mental y física para que sus alumnos sigan soñando. Más importante aún, hacen todo eso en las condiciones más precarias.

One of those students invited me to take a look at her school, a very special school in Cumaná. It is one of the few schools in the country fully devoted to teaching outstanding athletes. All her students practice some sport at the highest level in the state. This school, which should be what we call in Venezuelan Spanish a tacita de plata (little silver cup) must have the record of most years without electricity: four (4).

Una de esas alumnas me invitó a conocer su escuela, una escuela muy especial en Cumaná. Es una de las pocas escuelas del país totalmente dedicada a la formación de deportistas destacados. Todos sus alumnos practican algún deporte al más alto nivel en el estado. Esta escuela, que debería ser lo que en español de Venezuela llamamos una *tacita de plata* **debe tener el récord de más años sin luz: cuatro (4)**

Yes, you read right. Since 2018, not four weeks, not four months, but four years, the teachers and students here have managed to do their work without something so fundamental in an educational institution as electricity.

Sí, has leído bien. Desde 2018, no cuatro semanas, no cuatro meses, sino cuatro años atrás, los docentes y estudiantes han trabajado sin algo tan fundamental en una institución educativa como la electricidad.

On top of that, they also have to deal with other complications like flooded halls and rooms because of broken pipes they can't afford to have fixed.

The day I visited students were not around. Teachers were sorting out final grades and the like.

El día que visité los estudiantes no estaban. Los docentes estaban finiquitando calificaciones finales y cosas por el estilo.

This symbol hangs from the roof as an inspiration for the future champions. Some of the kids from this institution have actually earned the chance to represent the country internationally. Some of them have brought medals and diplomas, but little has been done to reward this institution and the teachers, trainers, and administrators who have made that possible.

Este símbolo cuelga del techo como inspiración para los futuros campeones. Algunos de los niños de esta institución se han ganado la oportunidad de representar al país a nivel internacional. Algunos de ellos han traído medallas y diplomas, pero poco se ha hecho para premiar a esta institución ya los maestros, entrenadores y administrativos que lo han hecho posible.

The stories of neglect (on the government's part) speak for themselves in every room.

The stories of sacrifice behind success are more intimate and one must talk to the protagonists to learn about them.

The more you talk with teachers, trainers, students, or parents, the more outrageous the situation is. As if the infrastructure problems were not enough, these kids lack all the basic services that were promised to them when the school was created. No decent cafeteria. They do not receive the basic nutrition any growing human being should, let alone an athlete. Many of them, according to the stories they told me, are experiencing weight and muscle loss, fatigue, and chronic injuries as a result of poor nutrition and poor medical attention. They do not have medical attention in the school and in case of injuries they have to go through the same ordeals any Venezuelan goes through, and that's already a lot to digest.

Cuanto más hablas con profesores, entrenadores, estudiantes o padres, más escandalosa es la situación. Como si los problemas de infraestructura no fueran suficientes, estos niños carecen de todos los servicios básicos que les prometieron cuando se creó la escuela. No hay un comedor a la altura de sus necesidades. No reciben la nutrición básica que cualquier ser humano en crecimiento debería recibir, y más aún un atleta. Muchos de ellos, según las historias que me contaron, están experimentando pérdida de peso y masa muscular, fatiga y lesiones crónicas como resultado de la mala nutrición y la mala atención médica. No tienen atención médica en la escuela y en caso de lesiones tienen que pasar por los mismos calvarios que pasa cualquier venezolano, y eso ya es bastante.

They get little support from the government when they have to travel for regional or national competitions. Many have not been able to compete internationally because they can't afford a passport (no help of any kind for that). Parents are usually pitching in to collect money to cover basic travel expenses.

Reciben poco apoyo del gobierno cuando tienen que viajar para competencias regionales o nacionales. Muchos no han podido competir internacionalmente porque no pueden pagar un pasaporte (no hay ayuda de ningún tipo para eso). Los padres generalmente colaboran o hacen algún tipo de colecta para runir el dinero para cubrir los gastos básicos de viaje.

These classrooms look like they are going to collapse anytime. How can they risk the lives of the most talented athletes of the state? How come they can't provide better basic furniture for the classrooms?

However, when it comes to "Kodak moments", there are always government officials willing to take credit for the miraculous achievements of the young athletes and the team behind them.

Parece que estas aulas van a colapsar en cualquier momento. ¿Cómo pueden arriesgar la vida de los atletas más talentosos del estado? ¿Cómo es que no pueden proporcionar mejores mobiliarios básicos para las aulas?

Sin embargo, para la foto, siempre hay funcionarios del gobierno dispuestos a atribuirse el mérito de los logros milagrosos de los jóvenes atletas y el equipo detrás de ellos.

Peeling walls, missing tiles, and a long list of little things pile up to a point that fixing anything looks impossible.

Paredes descascaradas, losas faltantes y una larga lista de pequeñas cosas se acumulan hasta el punto de que arreglar cualquier cosa parece imposible.

This is the library. Only a few official textbooks left. No technology of any kind for these kids to do research.

Every half-naked wall felt like a slap in the face. These kids are supposed to excel both in sports and in academics. How much can we expect from these limited resources? Most of the students here come from humble homes. Most of them have no cell phones, computers or internet at home.

What looked like renovated tracks at the "Olympic stadium" ended up being a big fraud. They did not follow any of the professional standards for track and field infrastructure. They did not apply the Tartan track and actually allowed a considerable amount of the material to go to waste.

I had a long conversation with the principal. It was a very honest chat and I felt very frustrated at all the things he has had to go through. One of the most shocking stories he told me had to do with the electricity problem. The cables were stolen, a police module was set up to safeguard the facilities; then, the police module was looted and the electricity company refused to replace the cables because there was no guaranteed they would not be stolen again.

Tuve una larga conversación con el director. Fue una charla muy honesta y me sentí muy frustrado por todas las cosas por las que ha tenido que pasar. On his own, the principal has managed to get some of the electicity issues sorted out with some volunteer work but they still need a bundle or roll of cable that must cost around $80. For a government that can spend thousands just on propaganda everytime they want to hide some obvious problem, this should be nothing, but they feel no remorse leaving what should be the most important school in the state in the dark for years.

However, when a recent election came, they quickly found a way to restore electricity in the school so that it would serve as poll center. The principal refused to let them set up the voting center (unless they guaranteed the school would continue enjoying electricity) and he was threatened with prison. They had their elections and after that, the school was in darkness again.

Sin embargo, en una elección reciente, las autoridades locales rápidamente encontraron una manera de restaurar la electricidad en la escuela para que sirviera como centro de votación. I felt impotent, useless. I really wish I could help them transform their school. There are so many talented people working day and night so that this school continues welcoming and graduating student-athletes.

By now, it is clear that this school, like any other public institution in the country, is a mere ideological tool for the government. Any attempt to question their directives is punished; any crump they receive must be celebrated as if it were a bounty. They must smile for the PR shot and work silently in the darkness, just like they have proven it can be done for four years.

I admire their resilience, their attempts at denouncing the corruption and ineptitude of government officials, and I truly hope more people can contribute their share to change this special school from the inside out. The kids deserve it and so the professionals who have devoted their lives to this project, which should be freed from ideological manipulations to be up to academic and sports international standards. Otherwise, whatever is written on the boards or on the walls will be nothing but empty words.

A estas alturas, es claro que esta escuela, como cualquier otra institución pública del país, es una mera herramienta ideológica del gobierno. Cualquier intento de cuestionar sus directivas es castigado; cualquier recompensa que reciban debe celebrarse como si fuera un banquete de dioses. Deben sonreír para la foto de relaciones públicas y trabajar en silencio en la oscuridad, tal como durante cuatro (4) años han demostrado que se puede hacer.

Admiro su resiliencia, sus intentos de denunciar la corrupción y la ineptitud de los funcionarios del gobierno, y realmente espero que más personas puedan contribuir con su granito de arena para cambiar esta escuela especial de adentro hacia afuera. Los niños se lo merecen y también los profesionales que han dedicado su vida a este proyecto, que debe liberarse de manipulaciones ideológicas y ponerse al día con los estándares internacionales en lo académico y en lo deportivo. De lo contrario, lo que esté escrito en las pizarras o en las paredes no será más que palabras vacías.
