I fall out of form again and am relegated from the Premiere League of bowling

Well that was a fun 5 weeks. I went from the bottom division, to being in the promotional championship, dominated that championship match, got matched up with the overall champion by chance, won that by 20 points or so and was the first person in the history of our DUMBO league to ever get promoted and win the overall championship the following week. I was on cloud nine and as you may recall I couldn't even point out what it was that I had changed. The following week I had to defend the championship belt against arguably the best player DUMBO has ever had, and demolished him. I won by over 100 points with scores of 178, 204, and 191. It was a blowout and I appeared as though I had found my form and was going to dominate for while.

Unfortunately, the following weeks were less than ideal and it appeared as though my moment of excellence was slowly but surely coming to an end. I lost in my 2nd title defense, not by a lot but by 50 or so. It was convincing enough and it was to the guy who I took the belt off of 2 weeks prior. I didn't get any "bye" weeks during my reign at the top.

The next week I bowled decently but wasn't in any sort of competition other than getting a high enough score to stay in the top division. Each week the lowest high-score of 2 games gets relegated to the 2nd division and the person who wins the 2nd division promotion gets the white belt and enters the top tier.

I BARELY stayed up in my one week after losing the belt, with a high score out of two games of 138. The next week unfortunately, I just couldn't make anything work.

I dont know what it is but sometimes I get up there and release the ball and things go right and other times it seems as though I have no control over what is going on. The worst part about this last week was that I kept missing single pin spares that honestly, you have to make if you are going to play in the top league. I ended the day with a high score of a mere 120 points.

As has become a bit typical of me when I am in a slump, I was constantly knocking down 9 on ball one and then missing the remaining pin most of the time by a lot. I need to do better than this.

So now I am getting sent back down to the 2nd division where I will not be eligible to crawl my way out for at least 2 more weeks. I think I am going to go and practice next week not to try to get a high score but to try my damndest to figure the hell out what it is that makes me throw well, and what it is that makes me just miss single pins all the time. The ability to hit a single pin is absolutely essential to bowling and if you can't do that, well, you need to figure that out before you are ever going to get anything decent on the scorecards.

My overall ranking based on averages looked like I was going to get into the top 3, but now I am ranked 5th of out 26 people. Not bad I guess, but I don't like doing worse than I can do!

Hmmm... Your description brings me back to a deja Vu, not on bowling though. There was one time back in the mid 90s when the arcade was a damn thing, I spent thousands ringgits practicing there. I'm an average player by all means, somehow during a competition everything went well, and I actually outperformed my usual self the entire tournament. I won back a couple of thousand (tokens) given the money I've previously spent, this "seems like" rewarding.

However, the 2nd tournament I appeared as a defending champion, somehow all the consistency vanished. I become my old self again. Not particularly bad, I'm still an above average player, and I still have certain outstanding skills that other players couldn't do. I also set one of the most ridiculous single lap time during the 2nd tournament. The only problem was, consistency. I couldn't replicate what I've done previously on an "overall" scale.

In the end, I spent a couple more thousands and wondering myself what happened during the first tournament 😂 a few years down the road, the internet became more common, the arcade was no longer doing competition.

Until today, give me a quarter, I believe I can still show you some crazy skills at the Daytona USA, when I add those best laps and multiply it by the total laps competing, that's what I did during the first tournament.

While I was a fan of video games in the arcade days I can't really get behind the online gaming. I tried, but people are just too good at it and are quite aggressive if you aren't top-tier as well. So I just choose to not play.

Bowling is a tricky little game. I would much rather not have the highest score of the year and instead be a bit more consistent from week to week. This is something I have tried to correct many times but just can't seem to work it out.

It's the belts for me wow, they're so beautiful. It sounds like you had quite the rollercoaster with your bowling journey good friend. Consistency can difficult. Keep at it and practice often reveals the secret sauce hehehe... !WINE however congrats on your achievements

They were the only thing we could really find that were awards that were silly enough for our group. It started with one award, and now we have 9 with the Masters award (for people over 60 only) being introduced just last week.

Just enjoy this event and don't take it too seriously even though being competitive is in our DNA. You did extremely well and the standards have obviously risen in the last few months which has backed you into a corner. Just keep on fighting and you will improve because obviously you have to up your game now.

I enjoy the game even when I do poorly. It is amazing to me that before my rapid rise to the top, I bowled a 72 the week prior. That was my lowest score since I have lived in Vietnam.

Sorry to hear that you got relegated. I recently started playing on a disc golf league and it is crazy how much your game can change from week to week. It's also interesting how it seems like when you are having a great round no one else is, or when they are having a great one, you are playing like poo.

I recall a round of disc golf that I played while visiting some friends in North Carolina. I had already relocated to Thailand at that point in my life and hadn't played in years. I won the round beating my two friends quite badly and they play several times a week. I hadn't played in something like 8 years at that point. When you're hot, you're hot I guess. I just had the "feel" for the bee that day and couldn't be stopped. Now if we had played another round the following day it probably would have been completely different. I just got lucky.

That's about how my round went yesterday. My friends were struggling and I was hitting a lot of stuff I normally wouldn't. I ended up six over which is a personal best for me on that course. It's such a fun sport.
