My Actifit Report Card: April 14 2024

Hey! After a week in Normandy at my parents' place, where we took a break to work on our freelance projects, we're back on our land working on our tiny house project.

Last week, we left our construction site with just one last OSB board left to install. On Saturday, we went to a hardware store to pick up our final board.

We also had a leftover floor joist, which we attached to the others before placing the OSB on top. If we ever install a wood stove, this is where we plan to put it, so reinforcing the floor isn't a bad idea.

Then, we took some measurements. Taking measurements after staying up late the night before and driving nearly 6 hours is not as easy as it sounds, especially when it's for the last OSB board.

When we talk about our floor project with others, we often hear, "you'll see, the end is always the hardest." And indeed, we've come to understand why!

In the beginning, when laying OSB boards on a floor, it's easy; you just have to be mindful of one wall and thus, cut the board to fit it snugly. But when it's the last board, in theory, it's surrounded on all sides by either walls or other boards. And so, it requires custom cuts all around.

We placed the board several times, only to see that it didn't fit well, so we had to redo our cuts.

It was real precision work! But now it's properly in place. We've put screws in all its corners. Normally, you should place a screw every 20 centimeters to prevent the wood from warping due to moisture. But we didn't have enough screws.

So, it will have to do for now. Anyway, we need to drive to do some shopping. So, we'll make sure to pick up all the missing screws then.

To celebrate the end of this first project, we used a leftover piece of OSB board as a makeshift workbench. No more bending down to pick up our tools! Yay!!!

And what's more, just look at this view. It's magnificent! I can already see myself trying out new recipes with this view for inspiration!

But I also feel like hitting the road in my van right now. So, I need to align all these desires!

And in the end, it looks perfect! It seems like a step but it must feel like a huge achievement!

Haha yes! I feel like I've done something crazy. Now I'm going to have to start laying the laminate floor I bought in January, I don't know if you remember.

I bought it thinking I could install it straight away when I got to my tiny house. And in fact, when I got there, I noticed that the floor wasn't really straight, so I did some levelling to make sure it was completely level. Then I noticed that my floor was too thin to be durable in the long term, so I had two choices:

  • break it all up and then have 2 tons of concrete delivered, drive it down 300 m of muddy ground by hand because the truck couldn't get down there, install it, etc.
  • Or make a floor that would hold on the agglos at the bottom of my walls. Put some OSB on top and then put my laminate floor on top.

I opted for the second option. It was certainly the most difficult to do, and also the most expensive. But 1, concrete isn't really good for the environment and 2, I'd never have been able to get it down on my property, you have to cross a stream and that would have been really difficult.

On the negative side, the floor means I've lost a lot of headroom, since I've lost about 15cm. On the ceiling, there's a beam right in the middle that goes down 20cm below my roof, and I'm now almost at its level. So when I pass this point, I have to bend my head down a bit, it's just about right, but I've already caught a few hairs in the wood grooves and it really hurts ^^
