Above is a photograph I took of some food before I ate it...yeah I know, just like one of those dumb fucks who always has to take a photo of their food for social media prior to eating it. I'm sure some people think I am and that's ok, it doesn't bother me in the least bit.

It's a steak, side salad, chips and a side of chargrilled broccoli which I fucken love. I ate this meal at a country pub a long way from home surrounded by...no one.

I don't mind my own company and often when I'm away for business prefer to eat alone; it gives me a chance to relax, regroup and to think as a human rather than a businessman. Having said that, I also enjoy company and sharing food with legit people around the table and every now and then spend some time with such people, a select group usually - we share good company, good food, a few drinks and a lot of laughs mostly about the old days, good and bad times...and if I took a photo of my food those fuckers would probably stab me in the neck.

The food, whilst not always anything special, always seems better due to the company; I'm of the opinion that good company makes average food great. I learned that growing up because my parents didn't have a lot to go around financially and rather than spectacular food being the focus at meal time it was about gathering together and talking, finding out how each person's day went, talking about current affairs and generally communicating like families should over the meal; we were never allowed to eat dinner in front of the television, we gathered around the dining table as a family, and that has stuck with me.

If we were all the same the world would probably be quite boring so fortunately we're all different.

We all do things differently, I'm not suggesting that sitting at the dining table eating dinner or other meals and communicating is the only way to do it, it's just my preferred way to do things in my home...others may eat in front of the television, the computer while gaming, with their phones in their faces scrolling on social media or whatever and that's ok (for them), I don't think it's ok at all though.

I think quality time with people who matter to us should be treated with respect, nurtured and encouraged - just my opinion.

I wonder, do you make meal time a family affair, a time when you all gather and chat together over food? In my household it's a special time and even though the food may not always be gourmet quality, made by a Michelin Star chef or anything other than simple fare, the time itself is quality and that's what counts. Let me know what you think in the comments below if you'd like to.

Mate, you have no idea how happy it makes me to read your post 😁

I'm not a normal person yet , but I want to be around for a few minutes and may publish some ideas but...

I share your opinion, and my parents are the same. Here, we don’t eat anything special; the economy doesn’t allow it, and in these last few days, there’s hardly any food left. But well, my parents have always taught us that at mealtime, everyone would sit at the table—no phones, no distractions—and I can tell you it’s the BEST moment of the day. It’s a moment of peace, of listening to stories, of laughing, of suffering, but all together with the people you love.

In my case, it’s my family, but at other times it’s my partner, and a few ones I'm myself companion. For me, that moment is something sacred, and I know many people don’t pay attention to this. However, in good company, food tastes better!

Yep, you understand completely. So many people make the "best moments of their lives" moments that are directly related to things but much of the time it's not the thing as mach as those one shares those moments with. A meal shared with valued people is a perfect time to create some lasting memories and to connect on deeper levels and I think that's where a lot of value comes from.

For a while we were doing great eating as a family but then a few things happened and we fell off the wagon for a bit and the little man ended up eating food that was just not great for him. When he eats with me he tends to eat a lot better than if I ask him what he wants to eat. Me making the choice for him means we are eating a bit healthier like a salad instead of ravioli. Still better than chicken nuggets or something lol or fast food.

Ah I remember the fun concept you did for a short period, what was on the plate where you take a photo of the mess left over. That was a fun one lol

People are often dictated to buy their lives, how busy or complicated they are, financial situations, commitments and all...but I think time should be made to nurture the family unit and connect with valued people and that can be (fairly) easily done at meal time. I thinknits sets a good tone, a nice steady platform to base everything else from.

My mum likes to give my sister a hard time for taking photos of food if they're eating out somewhere completely different to the usual (she doesn't bother with their usuals).

Admittedly I did the same thing when I was about to tuck into something one of the times we went out and she was like WAIT coz she wanted to take a photo my my food as well XD

I will occasionally take a picture of interesting looking food before I eat it and often of any special/gathering meals Mum prepares because she loves cooking and usually makes extravaganzas

My family will usually eat together, though sadly J's side of things won out despite my best efforts while the kids were growing up (his side of the family would gather together for the company, bolt down their food as fast as possible and then leave, the only time this changed was during large family gatherings where talking would inevitably happen, at least J has slowed down and the kids eat at a fairly normal speed and mealtime just passes relatively quickly because there's not always conversation).

I think the idea of taking photos of food has been around for a while and there's no harm in it although I think back in the day it was more about something specially made rather than every day food photographed for people's (usually fabricated) social media representations. I think you know what I mean.

I think it's nice that families eat together especially in this hectic existence most of us lead at the moment. Back when I was a kid it wasn't anything special, it was the norm, and I'm glad to have grown up with that in my life, something I've carried forward.

Ah this brings me back. Growing up, our family would always eat breakfast together before going to work/school. Dinner would be the same. Sometimes when my parents had to work overtime, I still eat dinner with my siblings. So eating has almost always been a group thing for me.

As I started working though, there have been a lot of times where I eat alone. When I was in a 24/7 shifting schedule, there are a lot of times where there are only 2 of us in a shift so one of us would eat while the other monitored things. Eating alone isn't a bad experience. I just wallow in my thoughts, maybe look at stuff on my phone, and appreciate the food. But I do think eating with my family will always be better.

Life gets busy, I get it, but I also think that's one of the reasons people should be trying to prioritise mealtime as a focus for them to connect even if it's not possible every day. We used to go to my grandma's house every Sunday for lunch or dinner, it was only once a week but it was a really nice time (she was an awesome cook) and that one day a week is something I remember even after all these years.

I also think people should be finding time to leave their phone in another room, even when eating alone. There is nothing that important it can't wait 30 minutes and a person also needs a break from the continual bombardment of propaganda the phone (social media) delivers. Just my opinion, you're welcome to disagree...billions probably do. I just find there's more engaging things than staring at a phone screen all the time.

Yeah, grandmas are the best. Their food are always better than what you can get in restaurants. I still haven't found anything close to my grandma's oxtail and tripe stew.

In a restaurant, eating alone, I wonder what engaging things there are to do?

Read a book, you might actually learn something valid.

Ah then it's a matter of apples and oranges. I don't view much social media. Bringing a book can be cumbersome. Just have a digital copy of it.

Yeah, I side with you as time spent with people of importance are beautiful and also serve as good memory depending on the location and at most times the occasion.

As we are all created differently with uniqueness in character, I also prefer to dine in group than solo.

Hi Galen, during the week I usually eat out, although every Thursday (on that day there is always paella on the menu in Madrid restaurants) I meet two friends for lunch and we talk about our things. Although I don't dislike eating alone either, it is an important moment of the week.

On weekends I do enjoy the food my mother makes. She is older now and every moment I spend with her is a gift for me.

That sounds like a nice routine and paella huh? Love it! Meal time can be such a nice time if the day and I think something more than the mundane should be made from it.

I don't think I've ever taken a picture of a meal, though mine are all masterpieces prepared from scratch and consumed at the table with not an electronic device in sight.

I have friends who lived in Sydney and then moved to Melbourne. I visited them in both places. It's more than 15 years ago though since I was last there.

Your food looks delicious and with or without company it would be wholly satisfying. I'm not a fan of distractions at mealtime either. I just wanna tuck in and enjoy it lol

Meal times are very important in my family, we never have the TV on because it is a time to enjoy food and good conversation. We eat as a family, even if one member is often absent due to work and different schedules.

Other times we go with my mother to places with nature, we take food and mate. She needs to walk and we both go to eat under a tree or something similar, they are very special moments. She is 71 years old and I want her to enjoy it as much as possible. We also often eat on the beach looking at the sea and in contact with the earth, it is very good for her.

Yesterday we went for lunch in a park I didn't know, almost at the end of the city on the west side, a beautiful park! We enjoyed it very much. I want her to be happy!

My wife and I used to sit at the table and eat, but anymore we just hang out in the living room because we like watching the news together and talking. The funny thing is we ride to work together most days, so by the time we get home, we already have all of the "how was your day stuff" out of the way. Dinnertime is a bit of a team effort though, so we always work well together for that. Some of my best paying posts on Hive have been food posts, so I don't mind taking photos of my meals. My wife and inlaws actually have to remind me sometimes to snap the pic!

A meal that looks very delicious.
And with complete nutrients.
Yes, I have already seen many criticisms with the pictures of dishes and food; but I think many of us love it and it gives us a lot of information on how they eat elsewhere and suggestions of combinations.
I hope you keep posting them, @galenkp

Good!
Cooking time or food preparation is so vital to me, so important for bonding.
It is not only about eating together; it is necessary to go beyond that, to prepare the environment, to make the food...
I don't know if this is understood by everyone, but I, as a doctor in Venezuela, always recommend in my practice that doing this in the family provides strong bonds and a better understanding.
And, as you rightly say, @galenkp :
"I think quality time with people who matter to us should be treated with respect, nurtured and encouraged - just my opinion."

I remember my childhood, mandatory weekend lunches for the whole family, exactly at 4 pm, at the big dining table.
Now, on weekdays we have lunch later, around 6 pm, at our small table in the dining room, while on weekends we usually have lunch outside the house. Breakfast on weekends is a pleasure, always in the living room, in pajamas 🙂

As lunch time on weekdays is part of the moments when we are home, together, we always talk.
During lunch we discuss some lighter, cheerful topics, while we leave difficult topics for after lunch.
