Lucky 13

lokidokismokinokibokirokizokigoki.jpg

Depending on what you believe, the number 13 is not considered a lucky number; There's several theories on why but I like the one that originates from Norse Mythology - The Norse god Loki arrived as the (13th attendee) to a feast in the legit place called 'Valhalla' where he managed to convince one of the other attendees to kill the god Baldur who probably fucken deserved it, or not I guess. Seems quite legit to me, although Loki was a trickster, one who only cared for himself and his shallow pleasures...so maybe Baldur didn't deserve it at all.

Anyway, this morning I thought I'd hit one of the cafe's I got to now and then to enjoy a breakfast and coffee. I was by myself but surrounded by a bunch of human nutbags, far too many for my liking, and there was only one table available...table 13. Like Loki did that time in Valhalla, I sat down with the intention enjoying some breakfast, nutbag people watching and some time to think; I wasn't concerned about the potential bad luck that table 13 might manifest.

As it turns out it was the couple at table 14 that had all the bad luck. Suckers!

Their meals took a long time to arrive, one was stone cold and the other wasn't what the lady had ordered. They called the waiter over who took both meals back to the kitchen. By this time I was tucking into my breakfast and enjoying it.

About fifteen minutes later their meals arrived back at table 14. OK, all will be well this time they probably thought...but nope, it was all fucked up again!

The meal that was originally brought over cold had been put into an oven to heat up (instead of being re-made) and everything was over-cooked: toast as hard as rock, rubbery eggs, bacon strips that one could sharpen, fashion into an axe and cut down a fucken tree with and a sausage harder than a seventeen year old boy's dick on prom night. The other meal...well, it still wasn't the order the woman had asked for. They called the waiter over and complained again. (For the record it would have been about that time when I killed someone had it been me but unlike Loki in Valhalla I would have done it myself.)

By this time I was done eating and because I didn't want to witness the fuckassery any longer I left but not without a silent thanks to Loki and gratitude that I managed to sit on lucky table 13 and not unlucky 14.

Have you had any experiences with the lucky (or unlucky) number 13? Do you see it as one or the other and why? Are you superstitious in other ways and if so why, if not why not? If you want to comment please go ahead, or don't.

My wife and I had a pretty interesting Friday the 13th once. I can't remember all the details now, but I know it was a hot mess.

That happens...and it's great to have a number to blame it on! 😁

Wow, that waiter messed up big time. After the first escalation, he should have made sure to get the order right. Reheating the food might be the manager's decision, but it is still bad all around. I don't think I've experienced anything unlucky with 13, or even during Friday the 13th, which is supposedly worse. I guess I don't really believe in lucky or unlucky numbers/signs. I do think I am very unlucky with a lot of things, and Murphy hates me.

That asshole Murphy pops his head up when least expected or wanted and I think he hates everyone! Lol.

The number 13 is neutral for me. The number 35 often appears in my life, for me it is a lucky number, it is my number. I noticed that there is something in the numbers, some numbers appear so often in people's lives that they do not fit into the theory of probability.

Well then, when you turn 35 you'll be in for a good year and if you already have then you'll have to wait until you're 70 and it'll be twice as good.

I didn't knew that story about Loki. Interesting. I don't believe in lucky/unlucky numbers just like I don't believe in gods or ghosts. But I think I remember that my favorite basketball team lost a few games on 13...But I am not sure about that and I am sure that they won games on 13 as well...so I guess it doesn't matter to me too much.

Hmm, maybe they just lost because they weren't good enough to win that day and when they won it8 was because they played better than the other team. What do you think?

You lucked out on that breakfast, or maybe the waiter did. LOL

Nah, I don't see 13 one way or another. I've never really had a superstition of anything really. Not sure why or why not though because I don't necessarily discount spirtual things either.

The number doesn't mean too much to me, certainly not in a negative or superstitious way anyway. Having said that, 13 donuts are better than 12 donuts so in that way 13 is awesome! Although, 14 donuts are better than 13 and so maybe 13 sucks after all.

I was really surprised to see that couple have so much trouble with that cafe, it's somewhere I've been a lot since about 2007 and I've never had a problem. Maybe something has changed...but my breakfast was ok so who knows. Poor buggers though, just bad luck I guess. Unlucky table 14.

Could be that 14 is just unlucky in that building and at that table. The world has some crazy puzzles that a knuckle dragger like me will never figure out. What I do know is that all this talk about breakfast has me hungry.

Lol...well I'm not sure but maybe table 14 in that establishment is cursed in some way. Hmm, now I need to investigate. Ok, not really, couldn't be bothered, I'll have a coffee and a couple cookies instead.

Hello Galen, with number 13 I bring a curious family story. My father liked the number 13 and every week he would compare in the cafeteria where he had breakfast a lottery number ending in 13, always the same number. One week, tired of not winning anything, he did not buy the number and that week the number he played for so many years, except for that week, was the number that won the first prize in the national lottery. After that, I never asked my father if he ever played number 13 again. And we never spoke again about that day when he could have won a big prize and didn't win it. What is certain, is that for many people, that day, the number 13 was the lucky number.

Best regards

Oh no, that's not good at all! I feel sorry for him after all that time playing the number. There's a lesson there, I don't know what it is, but it's there I think.

I hope your Saturday goes well.

My Saturday is going well, so far. There's a saying around here that goes, “that the day is going well until someone comes along and fucks it up”. I hope the translator found the right translation.

About the lesson, if one is made with a dream I had, and that I will tell the day it is time to talk about dreams, it is that the only luck is work....

I hope your Saturday goes well too.

Yep, we have a similar saying, the translator did a reasonable job. It's cold here, 10C and wet but the wind has stopped which is good. We're going out for dinner tonight which should be nice, then home to watch F1 qualifying live from Hungary (and coffee and snacks).

Sounds like a very good plan, enjoy it as you deserve. Around here, if it is not as hot as yesterday (we reached almost 40 degrees Celsius) I will go to see an exhibition this afternoon, now I take the opportunity to feel the “freshness” 😁 of the morning.

I haven't seen any correlation between any numbers and shit going sideways for me. My grandfather was a fan of Walt Kelly's Pogo comic, and Churchy the turtle was suspicious of Friday the 13th. Especially if it snuck up an a different day just to be clever.

Lol, I like those old comics, the news paper used to have them when I was a kid, Garfield and Hägar the Horrible were my favourite ones as a kid. I'll admit to know knowing the Pogo comic strip.

Too many crazy humans? I always say the same thing hahaha

I'm not superstitious at all, on the contrary 13 is beautiful! But poor people at table 14, that's bad luck.

I don't believe in good or bad luck but in cause and effect, what we do comes back and what we think too. In my life I had both, but the bad things were never luck, they were my responsibility or a revote action of actions of my family, when I was a child.

That is why it is so important to act correctly, life is a boomerang.

13 is beautiful? Hmm, which numbers are the ugly ones?

None! It will depend on people's experiences, for example my favorite is the 24th and you know why? Because it's the horse in the lottery hahaha and it reminds me of my paternal grandfather who loved horse racing.

Numbers... are just numbers, like things, a black cat is not bad luck, it's good luck!

When I was in high school (now I'm looking for time to write a post about it 🙂), in the grading journal, I was number 13. Not a single professor ever called me for answering by choise: "Let's go out on the board, under number XY".

For me, the number 13 is not a bad number.

People hold superstitions and a lot of the time they're unfounded although what a person believes will be their reality I guess...it's also easy for people to blame anything else except themselves for the bad things that occur in their lives.

A men finds the reason for his failure in a black cat, a disabled person, a shape of a cloud in the sky... Just so he doesn't look at himself in the mirror and think about what he can do to not be "malicious".

Hmm as someone studied statistics, I don't really believe in lucky/unlucky numbers. Every number is equal. Lol! In Asia, "4" is more widely perceived to be the unlucky number because it sounds almost similar to "die" in Mandarin.

Some believe, some do not, it's personal choice I guess.

This unlucky 13 thing is more relevant in the western world. For the Chinese, 13 is actually a nice number as it sounds like 'defintely alive', whereas 14 on the other hand is 'definitely dead'. 4 is the worse number for the Chinese.

I've seen some high rise buildings in Hong Kong actually skip the 4th floor (death), 14th (definitely dead), 24th (easy dead), 34th (makes no sense to keep it if you skip all the other 4s) and 44th (dead dead!!!), probably just to be safe than sorry!!

Personally, I'm not superstitious at all, it makes no difference to me. My last house was number 24. But given the choice I would choose number 3 or 8 over 4. Woops! Does that make me superstitious 😅

Hmm, maybe table 14 thought the couple was Chinese and decide to 14-them.

Lol...umm yeah I think the last bit of your final paragraph negates the first of the same paragraph. 🫣

I grew up in a house with the number 24. The address was 24 forth street, Forthtown. What could go wrong? Ok, not really, but the house number was 24.

I think most people have a superstition of some kind, even just a very small thing like a favourite/like clothing item or jewelry or some such thing. I remove a button on one sleeve of my business shirts and re-sew it using purple thread for instance...I did a post on why I do this back a while. I see nothing wrong with that stuff as long as it doesn't inhibit ones life.

Also, isn't number 8 considered a lucky number for the Chinese? Here they all scramble to get 8's into their car license plates.

0

If you ever see a bunch of cars with many 8s on their plates at a random place on Sunday, you can bet there's a good Chinese restaurant around for yum cha.

8 sounds like rich/make money, so 168 (one road rich) or 138 (one life rich) are lucky numbers, as are 88 or 888 of course 🤑🤑🤑

I see nothing wrong with that stuff as long as it doesn't inhibit ones life.

Definitely nothing wrong with a little superstition or habit in life, it's all to do with a peace of mind. And that's the most important

Here’s mine 😅

When the new director of our hospital arrived, he hated that number; according to him ... he had lost more patients in bed 13 than in the operating room. So, he ordered the removal of the number from all wards in the hospital, resulting in chaos.

Doctors couldn’t remember this and kept using it. Patients, orderlies, and nurses had to deal daily with the task of finding a bed that didn’t exist. Months later, underneath each number 14, a #13 appeared, a rebellion. To this day, they still refer to bed 14-13 😅

Haha, that's a great story!

I know hotels that do not have level 13 or room 13 and have heaed if other such things. Isn't human superstition funny and interesting?

Wow, you had a great time at table 13. Quite a movie to watch at table 14 and also to add some humour afterwards on the blockchain.

😁

(I'm not super-titious... I was in a group 13 in high school, I liked that it was 13)

That's what I remember at the moment, but I could try to remember how much contact I had with that number and what happened.

There's a familiar quote I recall, one that could apply to that couple.

"If you have the choice between table 13 and table 14 and you have breakfast on your mind, choose table 13 because table 14 is for losers."

Seems legit. 😉
