Hivegarden Garden Update: Spring has arrived!
It has been months ago that I created my last post in this community. After harvesting my crops at the end of the summer nothing much happened in my garden really. Autumn and winter have been mostly dark and with lots of rain.
But now it's is becoming spring again. It is slowly getting warmer and sunnier in the past few weeks.
Last year was my first experiment with growing vegetables and I really liked it. It was so much fun growing your own food and it tasted delicious too.
I have learned a lot and will be doing things a bit differently this year. I have also reorganised the garden a bit so I have just a bit of extra space for growing some more crops.
A couple of weeks ago I started planting some seeds again to prepare some plants to be migrated to our tiny vegetable garden in the backyard.
I have seeded, Broccoli, Sweet peppers, Tomatoes, Cucumber, Zucchini, Lettuce, Sping unions, Stick string beans and even a Watermelon.
Probably way too many to fit in my small garden, but I can always give some seedlings away like I did last year.
After a few days most seedlings started to show up...
The stick beans grew really fast. They overgrown the other plants, so I had to remove them from the tray. It might be a bit too early, but I already moved them outsite last week.
I have built a structure from bamboo so they can nicely climb their way up.
I've also cleared the area where I had my crops last year and added some fertilizer.
Last week I needed to move the other seedlings from the tray as well as they have grown quite well. They are indoors on a very sunny spot.
As I mentioned I have cleared some extra space in my backyard to make room for some more plants. In the middle of my backyard I have a space with some bushes and trees. I moved some bushes around which resulted in a bit of extra space underneath my peach tree.
A perfect spot to place some smaller crops like broccoli and lettuce I think.
Apart from the plum tree I also have an apple tree, an almond tree and a raspberry bush. The latter is doing really good again. That really is the easiest and fastest growing plant in my garden. It delivers us loads of raspberries every year. I had cut it back completely, but is already growing really fast.
I have added some extra sticks to the apple tree and bound the new twigs to the bamboo to guide it in the direction I want.
This picture is one I took a week ago.
We have planted the apple tree last year. In the first year it already grew some apples. Not that many and not that big, but it was a nice start.
I also didn't give the tiny apples enough space which caused them to stay small. I'll try to do this better this year.
Today I spotted the first lovely white blossom on the tree.
The yield of the almond tree was 6 almonds. It is such a lot of work to get the almonds out of their shell. But they tasted nice.
We have this tree mostly because it's so nice, not for the harvest.
And there was another plant that survived the winter; our mint plant. I had bought that plant last year and planted it in full ground.
It didn't look very well during winter, but it came back well in spring.
It even multiplied itself. We use the mint leaves for tea or water which gives it a nice flavour!
I hope you enjoyed this blog. I'll be making more blogs about the progress soon.
Happy gardening!
