Agression against top athletes

I try to stay positive in life. Complaining usually only brings negative energy. But I really need to get this off my chest.
I’ve noticed that lately there’s more and more aggression. People seem to lose their temper faster and become aggressive more quickly. Toward the police or other emergency workers, which I already find insane, but there's also a recent trend I seem to have spotted of agression towards athletes.

Yes, there’s often rivalry in sports, but why do we see more and more aggression around the fields and courses these days?
And what’s really “in” now, apparently, is spitting at athletes. How disgusting and low is that?
What’s wrong with these people?

Last weekend, I saw a football match in the top division in the Netherlands. A grown man spit at a player from the sideline.
A GROWN MAN!?

That same weekend there was a 'supporter' alongside the course of the E3 Saxo Classic thas spit towards Mathieu van der Poel. It is well known that there are a lot of people that don't like it that MVDP wins a lot of races. He just has an extraordinary season, but why this agresssiveness against such a great athlete?
And again, by a grown man?
And today, during the Tour de Flandres, there was a spitting incident again?

And it can even get worse. Last year during Paris Robaix a female spectator threw a cap towards the derailler of Mathieu van der Poel. You don't want to know what would have happened when the cap would have gone in at the speed of which he was racing.

It's really sad to see these 'incidents' are happening more often nowadays. Yes, it can be annoying when another athlete or team is always better than the one you are supporting, but please pay some respect to the athletes. They deserve that!

I think most of these aggressions are from haters…no matter how successful you are, there are just some persons who wouldn’t be happy for you. The sports regulation bodies needs to regulate these aggressions and penalize the offenders so that they would be a lesson to forgers to avoid more harmful aggressive attempts

Sure, you can hate it that another athlete is always better than the one you are supporting. But why do you have to be agressive towards the athletes?

They do penalize offenders, but do these people really think about eventual consequences when they do these things? I don't think so.

But I don't see a solution either.

Would it be right to consider this as a subset of the broader trend all over, @friendlymoose, that somehow we can justify whatever obscene, crude, or worse way in which we simply talk with each other? Worse still, in the name of freedom of expression, justify harming others or their property or both?

As you rightly point out, the incidents cited are not examples of some poorly trained youth. They are grown adults. What happened to them that they can somehow justify these actions in their own mind? Does it at least start with the fact they may be surrounded by others who not only do not stop them, but encourage them?

In my view, I will go back to raising children. How would any of us characterize those lessons in life which have stood the test of time and stand out the most? I can only speak for myself. They were those learned by the consequences suffered, as a result of at least immature thinking, if not worse.

Checks and balances.

I think life lessons must keep that concept firmly in mind. We are experiencing what happens when wrong headed actions are not quickly followed with consequences. Too often under the misguided notion that if we just let it go by, perhaps it will end there.

Bad idea?

It is a broader trend indeed. I think these acts are a combination of powerlessness and frustration of these people.

We are experiencing what happens when wrong headed actions are not quickly followed with consequences.

I think a lot of people don't think about the consequences in the heat of the moment. Everyone knows there are camera's everywhere nowadays and nothing can be done without people noticing it. People also know there are consequences like fines or a stadium ban, but still these people do what they do.

Spitting at athletes is so gross. These people should be banned from events forever. No respect at all man

I totally agree. Unfortunately this is hard to control because these cycling events are on open roads.

Hello!
I think it's great that you're bringing up this topic of violence against athletes, as it's a global phenomenon that requires us to address it by promoting respect.
Bravo!

I noticed that the audience at bicycle races is very close to athletes, but that shouldn't be the reason or excuse for aggression toward them! It's just crazy to do it! Why the heck would you spit on some athlete?? Jealous of its success? Cheering the opposite team?

It's ridiculous and very disturbing... Don't know how to explain that kind of behavior... Maybe mainstream media could be one of the biggest causes as they, literally spreading hatred all the time... It amazes me how much hate comes out from regular TV news... 😤

That's the beauty of the sport I think. Being that close to the athletes!
But indeed, that shouldn't be a reason for agression. In fact, it should be a reason to behave better.

Maybe mainstream media could be one of the biggest causes as they, literally spreading hatred all the time...

Sadly it's indeed becoming the overall trend; in ('social')media, politics, sports, traffic.
If we see politicians calling each other names on TV or online for all kinds of things, what kind of example is that?

Agree... 😞 Seeing something similar yesterday in one of the Discord shows made me very sad...

😟 These are people who are obviously out of their minds. The danger of crowds.
