My top 5 of the "Underdogs" in the History of Soccer.
A few days ago, I posted a review of the movie American Underdog on this platform. A film that tells the story of Kurt Warner, a former American football player who went from stocking shelves at a grocery store to winning the Superbowl and becoming an American Football Hall of Fame inductee. Warner is considered the most famous underdog in American sports. An underdog is a competitor (team or player) that isn't likely to win a competition or contest. In the history of world sports there are lots of instances of underdogs, where predicted losers prove everybody wrong and end up winning and surprising everybody.

In the history of soccer, the most iconic episode of a team that was largely expected to lose was Uruguay in the 1950 World Cup in Brazil. In that World Cup, Uruguay defeated super-favorites Brazil 2-1. Before the start of the match, the Brazilian team was favored to win by everyone: the press, the government and the fans. The excitement and cheerfulness of the fan on the streets was such that they were already celebrating the “triumph”. The Brazilian team had scored thirteen goals in the two previous matches, and they only needed a draw against the Uruguayans to be crowned world champions for the first time (in that edition of the World Cup, the final phase was played in group format). Brazil failed to do so, and the nearly 200,000 souls who attended the Maracaná in Rio de Janeiro wept in the stands in grief, disbelief and disappointment. Starting with the "Macaranazo" as an emblematic story, I will share with you a list of five other underdog stories ranked in descending order, from least to most important, according to the impact and repercussion of the defeat and the context in which it occurred.
5.- The "Centenariazo": Venezuela's victory over Uruguay, 3-0, in the qualifiers for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
Deep in my heart, this triumph should be the number one on this list. I still watch the videos and I still get excited; but, well, I must be objective in this subjective selection. In that sense, I will start this list with the "Centenariazo". The "Centenariazo" was a historic victory 0-3 of the surprising “Vinotinto” over the always difficult "charrúa" team. This victory took place in Montevideo on March 31, 2004 during the Germany 2006 World Cup qualifiers. The Vinotinto's goals were scored by Gabriel Urdaneta, Héctor González and Juan Arango. With this victory, the team coached by professor Richard Páez jumped to third place in the standings with nine points, two less than Argentina (11) and one less than Paraguay (10). With this triumph, Venezuelans began to feel more and more excited about their soccer team. This team brought Venezuelan fans a lot of joy and hope. However, this victory was not enough to qualify for the World Cup. We finished in eighth place, with eighteen points, five wins, three draws and ten defeats. Uruguay, on the other hand, qualified for the playoffs with twenty-five points.
4.- Alcoyano's 2-1 win against Real Madrid for the Copa del Rey 2020-2021.
Two weeks ago, Real Madrid beat Alcoyano 3-1 in the play-offs for the round of 32 of the Copa del Rey 2021-2022. However, the preview of this match was marked by the recent memory of the 2-1 defeat that Alcoyano inflicted on Madrid in last year's cup edition. In this game, Madrid took the lead after a header by Eder Militao; but with less than ten minutes to go, Alcoyano scored the equalizer. In extra time, and after a red card for the home team, Real Madrid could not hold on to the draw and conceded a surprise goal with 5 minutes to go. In this match, the most valuable player was José Juan, Alcoyano's goalkeeper, who made several saves that allowed his team to win. A real battle between David and Goliath this match was. If you take a look at the huge difference in budget between the two teams you will know why: Real Madrid with six hundred million euros (600,000,000), and Alcoyano with seven hundred thousand euros (700,000).
3.- Triunfo del Alcorcón 4-0 antes el Real Madrid
3.-Alcorcón 4-0 win over Real Madrid
Real Madrid, given their history, squad and budget, will always be expected to win every game, and even more so when facing a second or third division team. That is why the 4-0 defeat they suffered against Alcorcón, a Second Division team, will be remembered as one of the most humiliating defeats in their history. It happened in a match for the round of 16 of the 2009 Copa del Rey. At that time, the line-up put together by the Chilean Manuel Pellegrini was notable for the absence of Iker Casillas and Xavi Alonso, due to technical reasons, and Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaká due to injury. However, with Guti, Raúl, Benzema, Van der Vaart and Arbeloa, nobody thought that Madrid would lose in this way.Alcorcón's first goal was scored by a former Real Madrid player, Borja, in the sixteenth minute of the first half, followed by an own goal by Álvaro Arbeloa six minutes later and a third goal six minutes before the end of the first half. Amidst the disbelief of the Merengues and the joy of the home fans, the first half ended 3-0.Everyone thought Madrid would tie and win in the second half, but that "feat" did not happen. Instead, Borjas scored the fourth goal just minutes into the second half. Madrid kept possession of the ball and created the dangerous chances, but failed to score. Alcorcón, for their part, knew how to protect themselves from this attack with effective blocks, tackles and clearances. Not even the changes made by the engineer in the second half - Gago, Marcelo, Van Nistelroy - prevented such a humiliating scoreline.

2.- Kaiserslautern wins the Bundesliga in the 1997-98 season.
In the 97-98 Bundesliga season, FC Kaiserslautern won their second Bundesliga after finishing with 66 points in the standings, two points ahead of their closest rival and defending champions, FC Bayern Munich. The extraordinary thing about this title coronation is that FC Kaiserslautern was a newly promoted team; that is, they had played the 95/96 season in the second division. Moreover, another extraordinary thing about this achievement is that this was the only time a newly promoted team has won the Bundesliga. The road to this title began with the hiring of respected coach Otto Rehhagel in the summer of 1996. Interestingly, Rehhagel had been sacked from Bayern Munich in the spring of that year due to poor results and disagreements with the players. The coach took over the team and led them to win the promotion tournament that season, 10 points ahead of VFL Wolfsburg, which gave them a direct passage to the Bundesliga in the 97-98 season. Already in the Bundersliga, the team swept through the season, showing great attacking and intensity, being strong at home and taking valuable points on the road. They won the title with one game left in the season, when everyone thought they would only be fighting for the first division. Among the players who were part of this team, the names of the veteran world champion defender Andreas Brehme and a young Michael Ballack stand out.
1.-Grecia gana la Eurocopa 2004
1.-Greece wins Euro 2004
Defying all predictions and beating the odds of 1-150 to win, Greece was crowned champion of the Euro 2004 edition. With a rocky, disruptive, but defensively effective game, the Greeks left great teams in their wake. The first team to suffer from the rigor and the effective attack of the Greeks was Portugal.Led by Cristiano Ronaldo, Deco, Rui Costa and Luis Figo, the hosts lost twice, in the first match (2-1) and in the final (1-0), despite maintaining possession, creating situations and having more scoring chances. Greece was a team that frustrated its opponents with its impenetrable defense. The next victim was the defending champions, Zidane and Thierry's France, whom they defeated with a 1-0 score. Next on the list was the surprising Czech Republic, the team that played the best soccer in the tournament. The Czechs, led by Pavel Nedved, Milan Baros, Tomáš Rosický and Jan Koller, played an eye-catching and attacking game; however, this attacking play also came up against the defensive wall erected by the Greeks. This match is also remembered for being the only one in the history of soccer to be decided by the silver goal. It is worth noting that Greece was coached by German Otto Rehhagel, the same coach who achieved the aforementioned feat with FC Kaiserslautern. The defensive game played by the Greeks was branded as boring and anti-football, so for many this is one of the cases in which a "dark horse" team did not enjoy the sympathy of the majority; that is, many people did not rejoice at the crowning of the Greeks because of their ultra-defensive soccer.
And you, do you agree with this selection? what other team or sports feat (it can be from another sport) would you add to this list? Greetings and thanks for reading.
