Hace unos días publiqué en esta plataforma una reseña de la película American Underdog. Este film cuenta la historia de Kurt Warner, un ex jugador de fútbol americano que pasó de reponer la mercancía en los estantes de un supermercado, a ganar el Superbowl y convertirse en un miembro del Salón de la Fama del Fútbol Americano. Warner es considerado el “underdog” más famoso del deporte estadounidense. Un “underdog” (tapado o no favorito) es un competidor, ya sea un equipo o un jugador, al que nadie da como favorito en un evento deportivo. La historia del deporte mundial está llena de casos en los que el equipo o jugador con menos posibilidades de ganar, acaba dando la campanada, y sorprende a todo el mundo.
A few days ago, I posted a review of the movie American Underdog on this platform. A film that tells the story of Kurt Warner, a former American football player who went from stocking shelves at a grocery store to winning the Superbowl and becoming an American Football Hall of Fame inductee. Warner is considered the most famous underdog in American sports. An underdog is a competitor (team or player) that isn't likely to win a competition or contest. In the history of world sports there are lots of instances of underdogs, where predicted losers prove everybody wrong and end up winning and surprising everybody.

En la historia del fútbol, el caso más icónico de un equipo que nadie daba como ganador de un partido fue la Uruguay del Mundial Brasil 1950. En ese Mundial, Uruguay derrotó a la súper favorita Brasil por 2-1. Antes del comienzo del partido, todos daban por ganador al equipo brasileño: la prensa, el gobierno y los aficionados. El ambiente en las calles era festivo y la gente sólo pensaba en celebrar. El equipo brasileño había marcado trece goles en los dos partidos anteriores, contra España y Suecia, y sólo necesitaba un empate contra los uruguayos para coronarse campeón del mundo por primera vez (en aquella edición del Mundial, la fase final se jugaba en formato de grupos). Brasil no lo consiguió y las casi 200.000 almas que asistieron aquel día al Maracaná de Río de Janeiro lloraron en las gradas de pena, incredulidad y decepción. Tomando como punto de partida este caso emblemático de un “underdog”, en este post compartiré con ustedes una lista de cinco historias de los no favoritos que dieron la gran sorpresa y ganaron sus partidos. Se clasificarán en orden descendente, de menor a mayor importancia, según el impacto y repercusión de la derrota y el contexto en el que se produjo.
In the history of soccer, the most iconic episode of a team that was largely expected to lose was Uruguay in the 1950 World Cup in Brazil. In that World Cup, Uruguay defeated super-favorites Brazil 2-1. Before the start of the match, the Brazilian team was favored to win by everyone: the press, the government and the fans. The excitement and cheerfulness of the fan on the streets was such that they were already celebrating the “triumph”. The Brazilian team had scored thirteen goals in the two previous matches, and they only needed a draw against the Uruguayans to be crowned world champions for the first time (in that edition of the World Cup, the final phase was played in group format). Brazil failed to do so, and the nearly 200,000 souls who attended the Maracaná in Rio de Janeiro wept in the stands in grief, disbelief and disappointment. Starting with the "Macaranazo" as an emblematic story, I will share with you a list of five other underdog stories ranked in descending order, from least to most important, according to the impact and repercussion of the defeat and the context in which it occurred.
5.- El "Centenariazo": Victoria de Venezuela sobre Uruguay 3-0, por las Eliminatorias para el Mundial de Alemania 2006.
En mi corazón, este triunfo debería estar de número uno en esta lista. Aún veo los videos y me sigo emocionando; pero, ¡bueno!, debo ser objetiva en esta selección tan subjetiva. En ese sentido, comienzo esta lista con el "Centenariazo". El "Centenariazo fue un triunfo histórico de la sorprendente Vinotinto del profesor Richard Páez 0-3 sobre el siempre difícil equipo "charrúa" en Montevideo el 31 de marzo de 2004. Este triunfo se dio en el marco de las eliminatorias sudamericanas para el Mundial de Alemania 2006, y los goles fueron obra de Gabriel Urdaneta, Héctor González y Juan Arango. Con esa victoria, Venezuela se colocó en el tercer lugar de la eliminatoria con nueve puntos, detrás de Argentina (11) y Paraguay (10). Fue un triunfo que inició la ilusión vinotinta y llenó de alegría y esperanza a los aficionados venezolanos. Sin embargo, esta victoria no fue suficiente para clasificar al Mundial. Quedamos en octavo lugar, con dieciocho puntos, cinco victorias, tres empates y diez derrotas. Uruguay, por su parte, se clasificó para la repesca con veinticinco puntos.
5.- The "Centenariazo": Venezuela's victory over Uruguay, 3-0, in the qualifiers for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
Deep in my heart, this triumph should be the number one on this list. I still watch the videos and I still get excited; but, well, I must be objective in this subjective selection. In that sense, I will start this list with the "Centenariazo". The "Centenariazo" was a historic victory 0-3 of the surprising “Vinotinto” over the always difficult "charrúa" team. This victory took place in Montevideo on March 31, 2004 during the Germany 2006 World Cup qualifiers. The Vinotinto's goals were scored by Gabriel Urdaneta, Héctor González and Juan Arango. With this victory, the team coached by professor Richard Páez jumped to third place in the standings with nine points, two less than Argentina (11) and one less than Paraguay (10). With this triumph, Venezuelans began to feel more and more excited about their soccer team. This team brought Venezuelan fans a lot of joy and hope. However, this victory was not enough to qualify for the World Cup. We finished in eighth place, with eighteen points, five wins, three draws and ten defeats. Uruguay, on the other hand, qualified for the playoffs with twenty-five points.
4.- Triunfo del Alcoyano 2-1 ante el Real Madrid por la Copa del Rey 2020-2021.
Hace poco menos de dos semanas, el Real Madrid le ganó al Alcoyano 3-1 en las eliminatorias correspondientes a los dieciseisavos de la Copa del Rey 2021-2022. Sin embargo, la previa de este partido estuvo marcada por el recuerdo de la derrota 2-1 que le propició el Alcoyano al Madrid en la edición de copa del año pasado. El Alcoyano eliminó al Madrid en el tiempo extra y jugando con diez jugadores, ya que habían sufrido una expulsión minutos antes. En este juego, el Madrid tomó la ventaja, gracias a un gol de cabeza de Eder Militao; pero faltando menos de diez minutos para cumplirse el tiempo reglamentario, el Alcoyano anotó el gol del empate. En el tiempo extra, y luego de una expulsión en el equipo local, el Real Madrid no pudo aguantar el empate y recibió un gol sorpresa a falta de 5 minutos para el final. En este partido, el jugador más valioso se lo llevo José Juan, el portero del Alcoyano quien realizó diversas paradas que le permitieron el triunfo de su equipo. Una verdadera lucha entre David y Goliat, sí nos detenemos a observar la diferencia abismal de presupuesto entre las dos entidades: Real Madrid con seiscientos millones de euro (600.000.000), y el Alcoyano con setecientos mil euros (700.000).
4.- Alcoyano's 2-1 win against Real Madrid for the Copa del Rey 2020-2021.
Two weeks ago, Real Madrid beat Alcoyano 3-1 in the play-offs for the round of 32 of the Copa del Rey 2021-2022. However, the preview of this match was marked by the recent memory of the 2-1 defeat that Alcoyano inflicted on Madrid in last year's cup edition. In this game, Madrid took the lead after a header by Eder Militao; but with less than ten minutes to go, Alcoyano scored the equalizer. In extra time, and after a red card for the home team, Real Madrid could not hold on to the draw and conceded a surprise goal with 5 minutes to go. In this match, the most valuable player was José Juan, Alcoyano's goalkeeper, who made several saves that allowed his team to win. A real battle between David and Goliath this match was. If you take a look at the huge difference in budget between the two teams you will know why: Real Madrid with six hundred million euros (600,000,000), and Alcoyano with seven hundred thousand euros (700,000).
3.- Triunfo del Alcorcón 4-0 antes el Real Madrid
El Real Madrid, por su historia, plantilla y presupuesto, siempre será el favorito a ganar todos los partidos y más aún cuando se enfrenta a un equipo de segunda o tercera división. El Madrid, como mencioné anteriormente, siempre será el Goliat del futbol. Es por ello que la derrota que sufrió ante el Alcorcón 4-0, un equipo de Segunda División B, será recordada como una de las más humillantes de su historia. Ocurrió en un partido por los octavos de final de la Copa del Rey 2009. En aquel entonces, en la alineación hecha por el chileno Manuel Pellegrini destacaban las ausencias de Iker Casillas y Xavi Alonso , por decisión técnica , y de Cristiano Ronaldo y Kaká por lesión. Sin embargo, con nombres Guti, Raúl, Benzema, Van der Vaart y Arbeloa nadie pensaba que el Madrid perdería de esta manera.
El primer gol del Alcorcón lo marcó un ex jugador del Real Madrid, Borja, en el minuto dieciséis de la primera parte; seguido de un gol en propia puerta de Álvaro Arbeloa, seis minutos después, y un tercer gol a seis minutos del final de la primera parte. En medio de la incredulidad de los merengues y el júbilo de los aficionados locales, el primer tiempo terminó 3-0.
Todos pensaban que el Madrid empataría y ganaría en la segunda parte, pero esa "hazaña" no se produjo. Por el contrario, Borjas marcó el cuarto gol a pocos minutos de haber comenzado el segundo tiempo. El Madrid mantuvo la posesión del balón y creó las ocasiones de peligro, pero falló en el gol. El Alcorcón, por su parte, supo protegerse de ese ataque con bloqueos, entradas y despejes efectivos. Ni los cambios realizados por el ingeniero en el segundo tiempo- Gago, Marcelo, Van Nistelroy evitaron tan humillante marcador.
3.-Alcorcón 4-0 win over Real Madrid
Real Madrid, given their history, squad and budget, will always be expected to win every game, and even more so when facing a second or third division team. That is why the 4-0 defeat they suffered against Alcorcón, a Second Division team, will be remembered as one of the most humiliating defeats in their history. It happened in a match for the round of 16 of the 2009 Copa del Rey. 2.-El Kaiserslautern gana la Bundesliga en la temporada 1997–98
En la temporada 97-98 de la Bundesliga, el FC Kaiserslautern ganó su segunda Bundesliga tras terminar con 66 puntos en la clasificación, dos puntos por delante de su rival más cercano y defensor del título, el FC Bayern Munich. Lo extraordinario de esta coronación es que el FC Kaiserslautern era un equipo recién ascendido; es decir, había jugado la temporada 95/96 en la segunda división. Además, otra cosa extraordinaria de este logro es que esta ha sido la única vez en que un equipo recién ascendido ha ganado la Bundesliga. El camino hacia este título comenzó con la contratación del respetado entrenador Otto Rehhagel en el verano de 1996. 2.- Kaiserslautern wins the Bundesliga in the 1997-98 season.
In the 97-98 Bundesliga season, FC Kaiserslautern won their second Bundesliga after finishing with 66 points in the standings, two points ahead of their closest rival and defending champions, FC Bayern Munich. The extraordinary thing about this title coronation is that FC Kaiserslautern was a newly promoted team; that is, they had played the 95/96 season in the second division. Moreover, another extraordinary thing about this achievement is that this was the only time a newly promoted team has won the Bundesliga. The road to this title began with the hiring of respected coach Otto Rehhagel in the summer of 1996. Interestingly, Rehhagel had been sacked from Bayern Munich in the spring of that year due to poor results and disagreements with the players. The coach took over the team and led them to win the promotion tournament that season, 10 points ahead of VFL Wolfsburg, which gave them a direct passage to the Bundesliga in the 97-98 season. Desafiando todos las predicciones y superando los pronósticos que le daban ganador 1-150, Grecia se coronó campeona de la edición de la Eurocopa 2004. Con un juego rocoso, molesto, pero efectivo en lo defensivo, los griegos dejó en el camino a grandes equipos. El primer equipo en sufrir el rigor y la eficaz pegada de los griegos fue Portugal. Liderada por Cristiano Ronaldo, Deco, Rui Costa y Luis Figo, los anfitriones perdieron dos veces, en el primer partido (2-1) y en la final (1-0), a pesar de mantener la posesión del juego, crear situaciones y tener más ocasiones de gol. Grecia fue un rival que frustró a sus adversarios con su impenetrable defensa. La siguiente víctima fue la defensora del título, la Francia de Zidane y Thierry, a la que derrotaron con un marcador de 1-0. La siguiente en la lista fue la sorprendente República Checa, que fue el equipo que mejor fútbol practicó en el campeonato.
