Enhancing Safety in Sports: The Need for Regulation

Injuries in high-energy sports like wrestling, boxing, Taekwondo, Kung fu, and football are unavoidable to some extent; however, regulations can be implemented to improve overall safety. However, a lot of people go into sports because it is a high-paid job, they are paid very well and they are recognized. My uncle told my cousin to go for Taekwondo because the boy likes to fight and he is tagged as stubborn. He started the Taekwondo journey and all seemed well but he started bringing bruises home that's when My Uncle wanted to change his mind but it was too late. He graduated and did so well during his presentation at the final level and got a huge prize.

Recently, our school launched an inter-house competition that included various games such as football, volleyball, basketball, sack races, and other track and field events to make the experience enjoyable. Unfortunately, during the girls' football competition, a serious incident occurred: one girl broke her hand after a fall, and another lost consciousness on the pitch. The latter situation was particularly alarming, as I feared for her life; thankfully, she was rushed to the hospital for immediate medical attention. The risks in contact sports are more than the fun👌we enjoy.

This event brought to mind the tragic story of Samuel Okwaraji, a Nigerian football player who collapsed and died during a match against India. As the only child of his parents, his untimely death left a deep impact, and ever since, I have presupposed that the risks associated with sports warrant urgent regulation. His death remains a shock to every Nigerian. Nobody knew whether he had any health challenges before he stepped in on the pitch to play.

Measures can be taken to enhance safety in sports. Below 👇 are just a few points that can be strictly monitored and adhered to.

Regular Health Screenings: Conducting routine health assessments of athletes can help identify and address any underlying health issues before they escalate into serious problems. X-rays should be conducted at every interval. This should be strictly adhered to to reduce the likelihood of health crises during competitions.

Protective Equipment: Mandating the use of helmets and other protective gear can mitigate the risk of head injuries and other physical harm. Such equipment is vital in contact sports and can serve as a first line of defense against injuries.

Age Restrictions: Implementing age restrictions can help protect younger athletes from engaging in activities that may pose a higher risk to their health and well-being to create a safer sports environment. Older ones should retire while the young ones should be allowed.

Ultimately, while the risks of playing sports cannot be entirely eliminated, strategic regulations can foster a safer atmosphere for all athletes. Prioritizing health screenings, protective gear, and age restrictions can help reduce injuries and ensure that sports remain both enjoyable and safe for everyone involved.

I don't like contact sports because the danger in it is way far beyond the income.

What about full contact fighting sport like MMA or kick boxing, what kind of protective measures can be put in place to prevent the players from getting bruises? The truth is when it comes to some kind of sport injuries are unavoidable, for instance the new sport that has been trending for a while now "slap fighting". The issue is not the regulation, some specific sport are not meant to be.
