When a team has many weapons as the Broncos and they're still falling apart, it's unlikely that there's only one problem.

There's no doubt that Nathanial Hackett has made some dumb, rookie mistakes. That said, it's not like that game losing play in which Wilson didn't throw the ball to a wide open Hamler in favor of throwing to Sutton who wasn't close to open was an isolated incident. Yeah, even the best quarterbacks miss wide open receivers from time to time; but, Russ is doing it on a regular basis.

I think there's a reason for that. He spent his first ten years in the NFL with a head coach whose entire history was coaching college ball. I think that Pete Carroll did a good job of leaning on the defense and the run game for a lot of years in order to simplify Wilson's job. Quarterbacks in college systems aren't expected to go through complex reads and as many progressions as quarterbacks in a pro system. "Let Russ cook." was an experiment to see if Russ was on that level of pro quarterback that they could have the offense run through him. After that flash in the pan where Russ was the favorite to win MVP, the world got wise to him. He just doesn't see the field on the level of a Mahomes or an Allen.

Hackett has been fairly successful in scheming guys open this season. I might be willing to argue that he's been doing a slightly better job of that than Ken Dorsey; but, Hackett doesn't have Josh Allen to throw a laser for a completion when two receivers inexplicably run the same route.

The reality is that Hackett isn't throwing the ball. If Russ isn't seeing the field at this point in his career, I don't know if there's much that coaching can do for him.

The reality for Broncos fans is that it doesn't matter if I'm right. The Broncos can fire the coach. They can't fire Russ until 2025 unless they wanna take a massive dead cap hit.

I did think that the Broncos were going to be extremely competitive this season. In fact, if I were a betting man, I might have put money on the Broncos upsetting the Chiefs and winning the division. Now, I don't think the Broncos are gonna be good for the foreseeable future.
