Observation of Phlebitis During Morning Round: Causes and Insights
During my morning round yesterday, I observed a case of phlebitis. Phlebitis, or inflammation of the veins, can occur due to various reasons, including:
Injury or Trauma: Any physical injury to the vein or surrounding tissue can lead to phlebitis.
IV (Intravenous) Therapy: Phlebitis is commonly caused by intravenous (IV) therapy, especially if the needle is improperly placed or remains in for too long.
Blood Clot (Thrombophlebitis): The formation of a blood clot in the vein (thrombophlebitis) can cause inflammation, and this is often related to deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
Infection: An infection in or around the vein can trigger phlebitis.
Prolonged Immobility: Long periods of bed rest or immobility can reduce blood circulation, increasing the risk of phlebitis.Chronic Conditions: Chronic health conditions like diabetes, varicose veins, or heart disease can increase the risk of developing phlebitis.
Medications: Certain medications like oral contraceptives, blood thinners, or cancer treatments can raise the chances of phlebitis.
This was a valuable observation during my round, and it's important to be aware of these causes to help prevent and treat phlebitis effectively.
