Cuando comenzamos la serie sobre el spring training de las Grandes Ligas debo confesar fue algo no planeado, simplemente sucedió. Hoy llegamos a su fin con el último equipo: el campeón de la división este de la liga Americana Orioles de Baltimore. La ciudad de los oropéndolas se encuentra al noreste de la capital estadounidense. Rodando hacia New York desde Washington no dió tiempo de conocerla, pero se me hizo una ciudad vieja tal como las que se encuentran en este eje. Aman el béisbol en el Oriole Park, ubicado en la calle West Camden y le da el famoso nombre Camden Yard a la tribuna ubicada en el centerfield.

    En el Ed Smith Park de Sarasota, FL, los chicos naranja están despreocupados, vista su extraordinaria nómina. Si algo supo hacer la gerencia en tiempos de reconstrucción fue invertir en sus propias granjas y, con el tiempo, ellas arrojaron resultados. Con balance de 101 ganados y 61 perdidos, los Orioles se llevaron el banderín de la división más difícil del béisbol sin despeinarse. Fueron una bocanada de aire fresco cuando todo el mundo esperaba el arrase de los Rays de Tampa Bay. No fue tal. Y es que están tan rebosantes de talento que muchos chicos tendrán que bajar a las menores con el corte final, aún teniendo las herramientas para quedarse arriba. Difícil y agradable decisión para el manager Brandon Hyde.

     When we started the series on Major League Baseball spring training I must confess it was something unplanned, it just happened. Today we come to an end with the last team: the American League East Division champion Baltimore Orioles. The city of the Oriole is located northeast of the U.S. capital. I didn't have time to get to know it on my way to New York from Washington, but I found it to be as old a city as any on this axis. They love baseball at Oriole Park, located on the West Camden Street and gives the famous name Camden Yard to the grandstand located in centerfield.

     At Ed Smith Park in Sarasota, FL, the Orange boys are carefree, given their extraordinary payroll. If there was one thing the management knew how to do in times of reconstruction, it was to invest in their own farms and, in time, they paid off. With a record of 101 wins and 61 losses, the Orioles took the pennant of the toughest division in baseball without batting an eyelid. They were a breath of fresh air when everyone expected the Tampa Bay Rays to sweep. It was no such thing. And they are so overflowing with talent that a lot of guys will have to drop down to the minors with the final cut, even if they have the tools to stay up. Tough decision and a pleasant one for manager Brandon Hyde.

     Nada es lo que parece en la pelota. A pesar de haber bateado colectivamente para AVE de .255 para ocupar el décimo puesto de 30 y lanzar para EFE de 3.89 obteniendo el lugar 7 de 30 equipos, Baltimore fue barrido por los Rangers de Texas en la serie divisional de postemporada. Claro, son series cortas y cualquier equipo por talentoso se tenga, no puede levantarse si concede ventajas. Al final, lograron jugar en Octubre, pero quedó un sabor amargo en la boca. Creo firmemente que la juventud les pasó factura ante el experimentado roster tejano. Nada, este año 2024 será el siguiente intento.

     Tres venezolanos hacen vida acá, pero solo uno está en el roster de 40: Anthony Santander. Rightfielder titular, bateó para línea ofensiva AVE de .257, 27 cuadrangulares y 95 carreras empujadas, siendo la bujía ofensiva. Por ello, los Orioles evitaron el arbitraje y le pagaron los once millones de dólares pedidos por el criollo. Éste será el último año en el cual los oropéndolas tengan control de su contrato y se podrá declarar agente libre al finalizar la temporada. Bueno, no si antes Baltimore le ofrece una jugosa extensión. Tal como lo miro y a menos que Santander tenga un año súper, lo dejarán ir apostando por los talentosos outfielders de las granjas de donde pueden escoger su reemplazo.

     Nothing is what it seems in baseball. Despite collectively batting for AVE of .255 to rank 10th out of 30 and pitching for EFE of 3.89 earning 7th place out of 30 teams, Baltimore was swept by the Texas Rangers in the postseason divisional series. Sure, these are short series and any team no matter how talented they are, they can't get up if they concede advantages. In the end, they got to play in October, but there was a bitter taste in the mouth. I firmly believe that youth took its toll on them against the experienced Texan roster. Nothing, this year 2024 will be the next attempt.

     Three Venezuelans are living here, but only one is on the 40-man roster: Anthony Santander. Right Fielder starter, batted for an AVE offensive line of .257, 27 homers and 95 runs pushed, being the offensive spark plug. For this reason, the Orioles avoided arbitration and paid him the eleven million dollars requested by the Cuban native. This will be the last year in which the Orioles have control of his contract and he can declare himself a free agent at the end of the season. Well, not if Baltimore offers him a juicy extension first. The way I look at it and unless he has a super year, they will let him go gambling on talented outfielders on farms from which they can pick his replacement.

     El lanzador derecho Albert Suárez es uno de los invitados al campo de entrenamiento. No lanza en la mayores una pelota desde 2017 y no ha tenido una buena primavera: ha ganado uno, perdido uno, en 11 innings y un tercio ha ponchado 16, sí, pero también ha permitido 8 carreras para EFE de 6.35. No creo haga el equipo. El otro invitado es el campocorto Diego Castillo quien fue liberado por los D-Backs, antes de ser reclamado de Waivers por los Mets, los Yankees, los Filis y, finalmente, por los Orioles. Es uno de los problemas agradables para el mánager porque el chico ha rendido en el spring training, tal vez haga el equipo como suplente del infield (batea para AVE de .375).

     Puede que en Camden Yard vuelvan a ver los bates haciendo explosión y guiando al equipo a la postemporada. Ahora mismo, el talento a bordo ha hecho que los Orioles ocupen la tercera posición global en los Power rankings de la MLB. Las únicas dos dudas serán: ¿Cuantos partidos ganarán los Orioles? ¿Serán más de cien nuevamente? Talento tienen de sobra aunque no sea muy conocido. Los aficionados en Baltimore se frotan las manos y rezan por tener una mejor postemporada. Nos leemos por allí.

     Right-handed pitcher Albert Suarez is one of the training camp guests. He hasn't pitched in the majors a ball since 2017 and hasn't had a good spring: he's won one, lost one, in 11 innings and one-third he's struck out 16, yes, but he's also allowed 8 runs for EFE of 6.35. I don't think he makes the team. The other invitee is shortstop Diego Castillo who was released by the D-Backs, before being claimed off waivers by the Mets, Yankees, Phillies and finally the Orioles. It's one of the nice problems for the manager because the kid has performed in spring training, maybe he'll make the team as an infield reliever (he's hitting .375 AVE).

     Maybe Camden Yard will once again see the bats exploding and leading the team to the postseason. Right now, the talent on board has the Orioles ranked third overall in the MLB Power Rankings. The only two questions will be how many games will the Orioles win, will it be over a hundred again? They have talent to spare even if it is not well known. Fans in Baltimore are rubbing their hands together and praying for a better postseason. We'll read you there.
