En el verano de 2013, tomamos el vehículo de alquiler y viajamos por varios estados hasta Willoughby, OH. Allí reside un apreciado primo quien trabaja en el mundo de la tecnología. Es una pequeña ciudad a 45 minutos hacia el noreste de Cleveland. Recién se había retirado Omar Vizquel del béisbol y su fantasma gravitaba sobre el Progressive Field como uno de los campocortos más espectaculares de la historia. Que no haya llegado al salón de la fama es motivo de misterio, tanto como lo ha sido el dejar de lado a David Concepción. Tal vez, en el futuro, el comité de veteranos de la MLB corrija el entuerto.

    En uno de los paseos que hicimos a esa ciudad, visitamos un conjunto de atracciones y ese día había juego en el estadio. Se enfrentaban a sus acérrimos enemigos Tigres de Detroit y pasamos varias veces al lado del Progressive para ir de un lado a otro durante la visita a Cleveland. La verdad nunca había escuchado aquello, tal cual pasar al lado del Universitario en un Caracas-Magallanes, se escuchaba el bullicio del público en las afueras del estadio. Es difícil olvidar algo así. Las masas, en realidad, pueden estremecer y lograr cosas si se lo proponen.

     In the summer of 2013, we took the rental car and traveled across several states to Willoughby, OH. There resides a dear cousin who works in the technology world. It is a small town 45 minutes northeast of Cleveland. Omar Vizquel had just retired from baseball and his ghost hovered over Progressive Field as one of the most spectacular shortstops in history. That he didn't make the Hall of Fame is as much a mystery as the passing of David Concepcion. Perhaps, in the future, the MLB veterans' committee will right the wrong.

     On one of the trips we took to that city, we visited a number of attractions and that day there was a game at the stadium. They were facing their bitter enemies the Detroit Tigers and we passed by the Progressive several times to go from one side to the other during our visit to Cleveland. The truth is that I had never heard that, just like passing by the 'Universitario' during a Caracas-Magallanes game, you could hear the noise of the crowd outside the stadium. It's hard to forget something like that. The masses, in reality, can shake and achieve things if they set their minds to it.

     Los Guardianes de Cleveland ya han dado señales de la finalización en su período de reconstrucción. La temporada pasada jugaron para balance de 76 triunfos y 86 derrotas. Pero ese récord es un poco engañoso. Es verdad, perdieron más juegos que los ganados, sin embargo tuvieron muchos problemas con las lesiones dentro de los veteranos y el novel equipo de abridores no pudo con la presión de una temporada completa. Así las cosas, con algunas firmas estratégicas, la recuperación de salud de sus veteranos y el ajuste a la rotación, se ven mejor en el papel éste año.

     Los bates de los Guardianes sonaron para AVE colectivo de .250, apenas por encima de la media de las mayores y ocuparon el lugar 13 entre 30 rosters ofensivos. Muy mal si consideramos que el pitcheo colectivo lo hizo mucho mejor, lanzando para EFE de 3.96 al obtener la posición 9 de 30 teams. Cinco venezolanos están en el Goodyear Ballpark estirando músculos en el spring training: tres forman parte del roster de 40 y dos fueron firmados con contrato de ligas menores e invitación al campo de entrenamiento.

     The Cleveland Guardians have already shown signs of completion in their rebuilding period. Last season they played to a record of 76 wins and 86 losses. But that record is a bit misleading. True, they lost more games than they won, however they had a lot of problems with injuries within the veterans and the rookie starting staff couldn't handle the pressure of a full season. As it is, with some strategic signings, the return to health of their veterans and the adjustment to the rotation, they look better on paper this year.

     The Guardians' bats hit for a collective AVE of .250, just above the major league average, and ranked 13th out of 30 offensive rosters. Too bad considering that the collective pitching did much better, pitching for an EFE of 3.96 and ranking 9th out of 30 teams. Five Venezuelans are at Goodyear Ballpark stretching their muscles in spring training: three are part of the 40-man roster and two were signed with minor league contracts and training camp invitations.

     Andrés Giménez es el segunda base titular, su línea ofensiva fue AVE de .251, 17 cuadrangulares y 62 impulsadas, Se estafó 30 bases y nada tiene por demostrar. Andrés Arias y Brayan Roccio competirán por el puesto de campocorto titular. Ambos jugaron pelota invernal y se embarcarán en una lucha fratricida por el puesto. Cualquiera que sea el resultado, parece ser ambos se quedarán arriba. El abridor Carlos Carrasco no necesita presentación y está de regreso con el equipo que le llevó al profesional, luego de dos lesiones el año pasado con los Mets. Firmó contrato de liga menor y solo se encuentra invitado, deberá ganarse el puesto en la rotación.

     Lorenzo Cedrola es un novato que ha estado dando tumbos entre Boston, Cincinnati y Mets. Ahora con Cleveland intentará ganar un puesto como suplente del outfield. No ha tenido turnos al bate en las mayores fuera de los campos de entrenamiento. Los Guardianes tienen varias interrogantes: su ofensiva, la salud de los veteranos y el cuerpo de abridores joven; pero con un año más de experiencia, esa juventud puede hacer grandes cosas en el Progressive.      Andres Gimenez is the starting second baseman, his offensive line was AVE of .251, 17 homers and 62 RBI, he swiped 30 bases and has nothing to show for it. Andres Arias and Brayan Roccio will compete for the starting shortstop spot. Both played winter ball and will embark on a fratricidal battle for the position. Whatever the outcome, it appears that both will stay on top. Starter Carlos Carrasco needs no introduction, but he is back with the team that brought him to the pros after two injuries last year with the Mets. He signed a minor league contract and is invite-only, he will have to earn his spot in the rotation.

     Lorenzo Cedrola is a rookie who has been bouncing around between Boston, Cincinnati and the Mets. Now with Cleveland he will try to earn a spot as an outfield reliever. He has had no at-bats in the majors outside of training camp. The Guardians have several question marks: their offense, veteran health and young starting corps; but with another year of experience, that youth can do big things at the Progressive.
