Grissom ran like hell and the third base coach sent him to the rubber on a suicide squeeze. The throw from center field was not strong enough and the Mets pitcher had to cut. Vital seconds were lost because if the throw had been a direct hit, the runner would have been thrown out for sure. The rookie's face sliding into the home plate is proverbial and is recorded in the second graphic that adorns this post.
