Conference Realignment Yet Again!

I haven't had the time to post for the last month or so as I was traveling. Since then, I haven't had the downtime (or desire) to write about anything. At some point, I will organize the photos and write more about my travels in July.

For now, I would like to shift the discussion to college football. I haven't followed it very closely as of late. However, none of the developments came as a surprise.

We have come full circle. The Holy Wars between BYU and Utah will continue in the same conference. This means that we might no longer have the weird every other year confrontation. As much as many Cougar fans wanted to see the Utes go back to the Mountain West, it's not happening.

When I say this came as no surprise, I meant it. The Pac-12 and Big 12 have always been the "weaker" links in the P5 Conferences. Many have speculated their downfalls for years. Of course, many of the speculations leaned against one or the other, but never both. With USC leaving for the Big Ten and Colorado crawling back to the Big 12, the loser was evident: the Pac-12.

What is the Pac going to do moving forward? I don't know. It will be interesting to see if they can survive as a P5 or disband altogether. If you check out the realignment tracker on ESPN, Pac-12 has no plans to add members as of now.

Assuming there will only be four P5 Conferences moving forward, the 12-team playoff format will be very interesting. The prospect of a conference sending out 3 teams is now a possibility.

With another conference alignment on the horizon, the college football landscape will shift once again. One thing is for sure, it's all about the money.

As a Brit this all feels real weird. First the way universities are defined by their football team; secondly the way huge sums are raised off of students who are amateurs; and thirdly by the way there isn't even a regular league structure.

All very, deeply, strange.

It's really bizarre in the sense that the money involved in sports stays in sports. It's like they are leasing out the schools' brands.

And yeah, the misaligned incentives. Why are universities not focused on education, etc. but sports?

I think it was a good move on their part. The Holy Wars will definitely continue!

It is. They’ve come too far to lose themselves to obscurity.

Football is the favorite sport of many people and we see that all the boys who play work very hard but in the end the team that works alot to win games.
