Memorial Day………….My Actifit Report Card: May 27 2024

It’s Memorial Day here in the US today. A day of remembering those who gave their lives in service for our country. Thank you!

Schools, banks and federal agencies, along with many other businesses were closed today in observance of this holiday. I slept in since I had nothing pulling at me. Once up, I read for a little while as I enjoyed my morning mocha. Then I spent one hour working on work. I know you must think I’m crazy to work on my off day and a holiday to boot, but I wanted some time not under the gun, to get the insurance verified so that I could also tomorrow spend a little time on check reconciliation. So I’m set to do that tomorrow afternoon.

That left us too, with the afternoon free. I suggested we go to Riverside Park. This was the site of the canoe portion of the Ski to Sea race I talked about yesterday. It’s the perfect place for launching a canoe. The river runs pretty swiftly through here.

I found this rock that I decided to keep as it’s interesting and exceedingly smooth!

I always find interesting rocks there.

Way out, growing all around are little seedlings that the seeds had been deposited by river waters and left behind as the river receded. They were everywhere!

At the entrance to the park, is a wooden canopy that has a sheltered picnic area as well as some tables open to the elements. Around the structure are various shrubs and trees that have been landscaped in. One in particular caught my eye. It was unusual. See for yourself.

In the middle of the pink flowered/red leafed tree, was a white flowered/green leafed portion. I’ve seen hybrids split before but usually, the host tree reverts to its original growth traits. Usually the ‘rogue’ branch will be much bigger and be extremely noticeable as it’s out of scale with the overall size of the plant. That was not the case here at all. It just looked like it was supposed to be there and was still in scale with the tree. The flowers were very pretty.

In addition to the river access and the picnic facilities there is also a loop nature trail that skims the perimeter. It’s a nice little place to go and relax on the beach at the river, have a picnic or catch some steps.
