Actifit report for Sunday: walking through Utrecht

Between recurring lockdowns and working from home, I haven't visited the city center in two years, except for two Covid tests and one shopping trip. So I wanted to see hiw it was holding up. I took the train to Utrecht Centraal and walked around the inner city.

The Zocher Park where the medieval city wall used to be is always a nice place for a walk, even on a rainy day. It had stopped raining when I went out, but it was muddy and windy.

The church looks better on the inside, decorated with flower patterns in muted colors. It's the Old Catholic cathedral Saint Gertrudis. I don't go to church these days, but I know someone who works there.

Grand Hotel Karel V looks as imperial as the name suggests. It's named after the Habsburg emperor Charles V. But nobody notices this grand front, which is out of the way of any traffic.

The shopping streets like Twijnstraat and Oudegracht were illuminated for a Christmas shopping season that was canceled. There's still a variety of specialty stores including multiple for comics and board games. I think you'll like this classic randonneur bicycle:

And the future is more specialization. The son of an old-fashioned cobbler turned his shoestore on Springweg into an online shoelace supplier. I ordered shoelaces both in the store and online, and I can confirm veters.nl delivers solid quality with excellent service.
