In a construction sense, I usually see this as a protective barrier between moving parts, sometimes to protect or shroud moving belts or fan blades. Sometimes used to divide a space but not its airflow or light flow.

In an architectural sense, see this in modern contemporary designs.

Sometimes used as a front grill of a vehicle.
