Oh, how I would have loved to have something like this when I was in high school; I would have surely participated in a few competitions. Unfortunately, it took over 25 years for something like this to appear in this town...

I learned to swim with other kids when I was about 6yo, it was something really common for everyone, in the summer we would go every day to the river which was very close. I guess it depends a lot on where you grow as a kid and what you are exposed to...
Exactly! My parents were older when they had me and had reached the point in life where they were 'afraid'. What I mean, is they would not do anything (or let me do anything) where I might get hurt. I honestly don't know if they even knew how to swim.
I have one boy like me and one who does swim.
Nowadays who in their right mind would let their 7yo go with his friends to play at the river, even if they promise to stay only in shallow water? :))) But it was a common thing years ago and even small kids had a lot more freedom.
Well.....times were different when we were all kids although we might have a few years on you. We would leave our kids in the car (no babies or toddlers mind you) while we shopped! Of course, that was in a small town in the high country in the Rocky Mountains, but still......
Things change and not always for the better!
