Old German Cemetery & Actifit September 16 2023
In the 1780s, the first German settlers arrived in this village where I grew up. They settled in the western part of the village, where they built a church and a school, the German school, and of course, they also established a cemetery. Until the 1990s, that cemetery was well-maintained, although I don't know if it was due to the care of the authorities or the common sense of a few locals. I remember how the green meadow was adorned with monuments and tombstones that testified to a bygone but ever-present past, surrounded by the fields of the communist collective.
Time passed, and along with it, everything was forgotten, left in neglect and indifference, as if the past and the Germans had never existed. There lie simple people as well as notable ones, people who laid bricks in the school where I also studied for the first four years, the Old School.
Discussions with the authorities have been had, postponed from one autumn to another, from one spring to another, from one year to another, from one administration to another. But now a group of young people who have united in a volunteer civic group intend to at least clean up this area. It is said that these German settlers brought iron plows, shoemaking, and blacksmithing to the area, and if today this area is more advanced than many other areas in the country, it is largely due to them.
I'll visit again in a few days to see if there was any progress done and take some new pictures. I'm tagging @beeber here just because we had a discussion before about this place...

Very nice that people are planning to clean up this cemetery, please do take some pictures in a few days and let us know how the progress goes...
I didn't know that German immigrants settle in this part of Romania.
I can understand why......you have a beautiful country!!😄
Very nice @actifit post....and steps, my friend!!!😄
This part of Romania was once occupied/part of the Austro-Hungarian empire so there were many settlers, in one part of the village were people of German origins and on the opposite side, there were even some Hungarians.
Sounds like my family heritage!🥰
Are any of the words that are spoken in Romanian, similar to words in German or Hungarian?
At least in the area where I grew up there are many German words still in use by the locals, but I'm not aware about any Hungarian ones.
Many culture’s, a melting pot in your country, I had no idea😊
More than you think :)) Census data says:
Very interesting my friend, it makes me wonder if some of my relatives lived in your country…🤔
I am glad that folks are taking steps to preserve this. There is so much that gets neglected and is eventually lost. Remembering the people who founded the area is a good thing to do.
I look forward to your post in the near future to see what it looks like.
Excellent job with your 10105 @actifit steps for the day. Take care!
