Is this goat just laughing or is she laughing at me?
My daily walks, which often involve getting wet, are actually there to clear my head. I walk along, take the occasional photo of something trivial and let my mind wander. If someone says hello to me, I say hello back without worrying about whether I should know them.
I smile at everyone, or maybe it's more of a debonair grin, just to have my peace of mind.
Diese Ziege lacht nur oder lacht sie mich aus?
Meine täglichen Spaziergänge, oft auch mit Nassanteil, sind eigentlich dafür gedacht, dass ich meinen Kopf aufräumen kann. Ich laufe da so für daher, fotografiere ab und an etwas Belangloses und lasse meine Seele baumeln. Wenn mich jemand grüßt, grüße ich zurück, ohne mir Gedanken zu machen, ob ich ihn kennen sollte.
Ich lächle jedermann an, vielleicht ist es auch eher ein debiles Grinsen, nur um meine Ruhe zu haben.
The first thing that snapped me out of my meditation was this Chinese in the middle of the main street. When I realized this, my thoughts were all about the owner of this exotic car. What could have possessed him to buy such a car? It's from China, resale value is zero, the nearest garage is probably in Manila and the thing costs more than a well-equipped DMax from Isuzu or Ranger from Ford.
Das Erste, was mich aus dieser Meditation herausriss, war dieser Chinese mitten auf der Hauptstraße. Als ich dies begriffen hatte, kreisten meine Gedanken nur um den Besitzer dieses Exoten. Was hat ihn wohl bewegen können, so ein Auto zu kaufen? Es ist aus China, Wiederverkaufswert gleich null, die nächste Werkstatt sitzt wahrscheinlich in Manila und das Ding kostet mehr als ein gut ausgestatteter DMax von Isuzu oder Ranger von Ford.
Still lost in these thoughts, I saw at the next and only intersection in this little town that the Highwal Patrol was visiting. When they're here, there's always something interesting going on.
Our local police are more of a friend and helper, driving young women home when it rains or opening bottles for drunks when they can no longer do it themselves.
They are mainly there to keep an eye on the tourists. They make sure that they don't hurt themselves or accidentally set fire to the mangroves.
Noch in diesen Gedanken versunken sah ich an der nächsten und einzigen Kreuzung dieses Städtchens, das die Highwal Patrol zu Besuch ist. Wenn die hier sind, ist eigentlich immer was Interessantes im Gange.
Unsere kommunale Polizei ist eher der Freund und Helfer, der junge Frauen nach Hause fährt, wenn es regnet oder Betrunkenen die Flasche öffnet, wenn die das nicht mehr selbst schaffen.
They are not interested in traffic at all, regardless of whether you are driving without a license plate, in flip-flops, without a helmet, without an exhaust or anything else, or whether children are driving these electric 3 and 4 wheelers. And as there isn't a single traffic sign here, they can't carry out speed checks or check right of way rules.

The guys from the Highway Patrol are a completely different story. They are neither related to the locals nor related by marriage, but they develop a remarkable ambition in enforcing these so-called rules of public transport.
They have a keen eye, they fish out every flip-flop wearer, every helmetless person to collect a fine. At the same time, they check the driver's license and the validity of the vehicle's registration. Every vehicle has to be checked every three years and if it is OK, you can pay your taxes for the next three years and continue driving.
Ganz anders die Jungs von der Highway Patrol. Die sind mit den Einheimischen weder verwandt oder verschwägert, dafür entwickeln sie einen bemerkenswerten Ehrgeiz bei der Durchsetzung dieser sogenannten Regeln des öffentlichen Verkehrs.
Sie haben ein scharfes Auge, sie fischen jeden Flip-Flop-Träger, jeden Helmlosen heraus, um eine Strafe zu kassieren. Dabei werden gleich die Fahrerlaubnis und die Gültigkeit der Registrierung des Fahrzeugs mit kontrolliert. Jedes Fahrzeug muss alle drei Jahre zu einem Check und wenn dieser ok ist, darf man seine Steuern für die nächsten 3 Jahre zahlen und weiterfahren.

Und die gut gelaunten Jungs kennen keine Gnade. Wenn das Fahrzeug keine gültigen Papiere hat, der Fahrer keinen gültigen Führerschein, wenn das Fahrzeug geklaut ist oder aus Schrottteilen zusammengesetzt, es gibt für alle dieser Varianten dieselbe Lösung: Das Fahrzeug wird eingezogen, sofort, unwiderruflich.
Mopeds are loaded onto trucks, cars are towed away. I can't wait to see how they get this excavator out of the way. It's still there.
All these vehicles are driven to some place far away where they then rot away. But rumor has it that you can release your vehicle. The police fund always needs cash. The parts trade also lives from these scrap yards.
Mopeds werden auf Lastwagen geladen, Autos abgeschleppt. Wie sie diesen Bagger vom Fleck wegbekommen, darauf bin ich schon gespannt. Der steht noch da.
All diese Fahrzeuge werden auf irgendeinen Platz weit weg gefahren, wo sie dann verrotten. Man kann sein Fahrzeug aber auslösen, munkelt man. Der Polizistenfond braucht wohl immer Bares. Auch der Teilehandel lebt von diesen Schrottplätzen.
I then walked on, still completely confused by this rigid traffic education, but after a meditative conversation with Rosinantes, whom I see twice a day on my hikes, I found my center again and was able to enjoy the area with its rice fields, mountains, palm trees and other tropical features again at a breezy31 degrees.
Ich bin dann weitergegangen, noch völlig konfus von dieser rigiden Verkehrserziehung, aber nach einem meditativen Gespräch mit Rosinantes, den ich ja jeden Tag auf meinen Wanderungen zweimal sehe, habe ich meine Mitte wieder gefunden und konnte die Gegend mit ihren Reisfeldern, Bergen, Palmen und sonstigen tropischen Ausstattungen bei luftigen31 Grad wieder genießen.
But not for long.
The turnoff from the main road into the rice fields is a bit hidden, between two houses, and sometimes I just walk past it. That's why I focused my attention on the right side of the street in this area.
When I briefly pointed it at the opposite side of the street, I was brutally torn out of my tropical summer feeling again.
Who on earth puts something like that right on the street?
Aber nicht lange.
Die Abzweigung von der Hauptstraße in die Reisfelder ist etwas versteckt, zwischen zwei Häuser durch, und manchmal laufe ich einfach dran vorbei. Deshalb habe ich in dieser Gegend meine Aufmerksamkeit auf die rechte Straßenseite gerichtet.
Als ich sie mal kurz auf die gegenüberliegende Straßenseite richtete, wurde ich wieder brutal aus meinem tropischen Sommerfeeling gerissen.
Wer in aller Welt stellt sowas direkt an die Straße?

The path through the rice fields and jungle was relaxing, except for the goat above.
Arriving at the beach, I saw that the wind was blowing from the right direction and the waves were not so strong that they would disturb my swimming, perfect...actually.

Der Weg durch die Reisfelder und den Dschungel war entspannend, bis auf obige Ziege.
Am Strand angekommen, sah ich, dass der Wind aus der richtigen Richtung blies und die Wellen nicht so stark waren, dass sie mein Schwimmen stören könnten, perfekt...eigentlich.
I swam from rock to boulder and enjoyed the fish that lived there. Although there are really only isolated rocks, far away from the actual reef and the ground is only made of sand, it is still an amazing variety.
However, I would have liked to have avoided meeting this swarm of cnidarians. These float in the water everywhere, but so isolated that it doesn't bother you if you hit one. It burns about the same as a stinging nettle in full juice.
This time it was a swarm and I felt like I was hugging a field of nettles with my arms and stomping my feet at the same time. The pustules immediately bloomed on every uncovered part of my skin and it's really uncomfortable, especially on the lips. But what can you do? Nothing. After an hour it has subsided again and until then it's time to suppress it.
With all the distraction, I accidentally got too close to a turtle, but it wasn't paying attention either. That wouldn't have been a bad thing at all, because we know each other and respect each other. I don't eat her and she doesn't eat me. But two of their 3 remora fish saw me as a new ride and in addition to the burning of the nettles, there was also a buzz around my thighs. Somehow I got rid of her because Mrs. Turtle kindly stayed nearby and proved to be the more pleasant transporter.
Ich bin von Felsbrocken zu Felsbrocken geschwommen und habe mich an den dort lebenden Fischen erfreut. Obwohl es wirklich nur vereinzelte Felsen sind, und die auch noch weit weg vom eigentlichen Riff und der Grund nur aus Sand besteht, ist es doch eine erstaunliche Vielfalt.
Allerdings hätte ich gerne auf die Begegnung mit diesem Schwarm von Nesseltierchen verzichtet. Diese schweben ja überall im Wasser, aber so vereinzelt, dass es nicht stört, wenn man mal eins trifft. Es brennt ungefähr so wie eine Nessel der Brennnessel in vollem Saft.
Diesmal war es ein Schwarm und ich fühlte mich, als würde ich mit meinen Armen ein Feld von Brennnesseln umarmen und gleichzeitig mit den Füßen nieder stampfen. Die Pusteln erblühten sofort auf jeder unbedeckten Stelle meiner Haut und gerade auf den Lippen ist das echt unangenehm. Aber was kann man da tun? Nichts. Nach einer Stunde ist es wieder abgeklungen und bis dahin heißt es verdrängen.
Bei all der Ablenkung bin ich aus Versehen zu nah an eine Schildkröte herangekommen, sie hatte aber auch nicht aufgepasst. Das wäre überhaupt kein Unglück gewesen, den wir kennen uns ja und respektieren uns. Ich esse sie nicht und sie isst mich nicht. Aber zwei von ihren 3 Schiffshalterfischen sahen mich als neue Mitfahrgelegenheit und zu dem Brennen der Nesseln kann noch nach Gewusel an meinen Schenkeln dazu. Irgendwie bin ich sie aber wieder losgeworden, weil Frau Schildkröte freundlicherweise in der Nähe blieb und sich als der angenehmere Transporteur erwies.

With all the excitement, I hadn't noticed that the weather had changed. The wind picked up so much that whitecaps formed and my dry bag tried to overtake me. I only noticed it when I could no longer see the ground and that was at a depth of maybe 3 meters because the visibility was so bad.
Eine Kamera für Unterwasser habe ich bei meinen Spaziergängen nie dabei, diese Bucht ist zu sandig und somit das Wasser zu trüb, als dass man hier Bilder machen kann.
Bei all der Aufregung hatte ich nicht bemerkt, dass sich das Wetter gedreht hat. Der Wind frischte so weit auf, dass sich Schaumkronen bildeten und mein Drybag mich zu überholen versuchte. Ich merkte es erst, als ich den Grund nicht mehr sehen konnte und das bei vielleicht 3 Meter Tiefe, weil die Sicht so schlecht wurde.
Needless to say, the cold wind didn't dry me when I got out of the water, but it did leave my clothes wet and sandy. But the burning of the nettles stopped a bit because the wind practically sandblasted me.
The five bathers there in the water did it more correctly. They waited until the gusts of wind died down.
Man muss nicht erwähnen, dass der kalte Wind mich nicht trocknete, als ich aus dem Wasser ging, aber meine Sachen dafür nass und sandig wurden. Dafür hörte das Brennen der Nesseln etwas auf, weil der Wind mich praktisch sandstrahlte.
Die fünf Badegäste da im Wasser haben es richtiger gemacht. Sie haben gewartet, bis die Windböen nachließen.
I know walking in the rain and don't see anything wrong with it; It's still 26 degrees, so I'm not making a face like that.
At that moment, when I finally had the smartphone ready to use, I remembered that I should buy something for lunch.
Spazieren im Regen kenne ich und finde nichts Schlechtes daran; es sind ja immer noch 26 Grad, deshalb ziehe ich auch nicht so ein Gesicht.
In diesem Moment, als ich endlich das Smartphone einsatzbereit hatte, ist mir eingefallen, dass ich etwas zum Lunch kaufen sollte.
