The legendary football coach Arsene Wenger who has been working for FIFA as their Chief of Global Football Development for many years now proposed a change to the offside rule which aims to introduce a clearer definition of offside.

As it's shown above, the current offside rule which states that a player is offside if any part of their body that can score a goal is beyond the second-to-last defender when the ball is passed to them. The new proposed rule will change this to onside.

Arsene Wenger's proposal suggests altering the offside rule so that a player is only considered offside if any part of their body that can legally play the ball is ahead of the second-to-last defender when the pass is played.

The idea behind this rule change is to encourage more attacking play by giving a slight advantage to the attackers. The current interpretation of the offside rule has often led to controversy and contentious decisions with goals being disallowed due to an attacker's toe or shoulder being marginally offside. By introducing a clearer and more attacker-friendly definition of offside it is believed that more goals would be allowed leading to a more open and exciting style of play.

However, this proposed change has also faced opposition. Some argue that it would disrupt the balance between attackers and defenders and make defending even more challenging and allow attackers to score more goals.

FIFA has shown interest in Wenger's proposed offside rule change and plans to experiment with it in various competitions to assess its impact on the game. The trials will provide an opportunity for players, coaches, and fans to evaluate whether the proposed alteration enhances the flow of the game and ultimately increases the number of goals scored.

As with any potential changes to the sport's rules, there will be a need for careful consideration and analysis of the potential benefits and drawbacks. Only time will tell if Wenger's proposed modification to the offside rule proves effective and whether it becomes a permanent alteration in the world of football.
