España ha vivido un importante relevo generacional en los últimos años. Hay muchos nuevos jugadores jóvenes que se están volviendo cada vez más importantes en la selección nacional, y ese equipo seguramente se está volviendo más competitivo a medida que pasa el tiempo. Obviamente hay muchos futbolistas españoles con talento gracias a todos los equipos profesionales de ese país, y Luis Enrique está haciendo un buen trabajo renovando el equipo con las generaciones más jóvenes.
Francia, en cambio, es la actual campeona del mundo y, al menos para mí, también eran las favoritas para ganar la Euro desde el inicio de ese torneo. Ahora están incluyendo a Benzema como delantero central, lo que significa que el equipo ahora es capaz de crear combinaciones de ataque más avanzadas. Ganaron la Copa del Mundo con Giroud como delantero central, pero creo que la mayoría de la gente se da cuenta de que Benzema es mejor a pesar de que el equipo ahora no está rindiendo tan bien como en la Copa del Mundo.
En las semifinales de la Nations League, jugaron contra Holanda y lograron una victoria milagrosa después de tener una desventaja de 2 goles durante la primera parte. Al final, ganaron ese partido 2-3 y demostraron que son un equipo sólido que puede superar situaciones extremadamente desafiantes.
Al comparar las 2 alineaciones hombre a hombre, creo que Francia es el mejor equipo, especialmente gracias a su trío de ataque de clase mundial con Benzema, Mbappé y Griezmann, el trío de ataque de España es con Oyarzabal, Sarabia y Torres. Sin embargo, en la Eurocopa, España demostró al mundo que es candidata a ganar cualquier torneo, así que esperaba un partido muy igualado con un fútbol bonito.
Me sorprendió ver a Gavi incluido en la alineación española, este es un jugador muy joven del Barcelona y no ha jugado muchos partidos profesionales hasta ahora. Su actuación ha sido buena pero como solo ha jugado un puñado de veces no esperaba verlo en la alineación de un partido tan importante para la selección nacional. Pero después de ver este partido, puedo decir que entiendo por qué Luis Enrique lo incluyó, ya que ciertamente brinda un alto rendimiento y es muy útil para su equipo.
¿Cómo estuvo el partido?
Francia dominaba al principio, pero no mucho. Tuvieron una buena oportunidad de marcar un gol con Benzema pero en mi opinión estaba en fuera de juego por lo que cualquier gol se habría anulado. El partido estuvo muy disputado pero también fue como si los 2 equipos se estuvieran midiendo. No hubo muchas jugadas peligrosas de ataque durante la primera parte, y el disparo más importante de España fue un lanzamiento de falta de Marcos Alonso que ni siquiera fue dentro de la red.
España ganó lentamente el control del balón y se convirtió en el equipo dominante durante un buen tiempo. Sorprende cómo España consigue tener siempre el control del balón ante cualquier equipo e incluso tras importantes cambios generacionales dentro de su propia plantilla. Busquets y Rodri hicieron un excelente trabajo tomando el control del medio campo, y esto permitió a Gavi y al trío de ataque español intentar algunas jugadas de ataque interesantes.
Algo que pudo haber perjudicado las intenciones de Francia, fueron las decisiones tácticas de su entrenador de jugar con solo 2 centrocampistas naturales, Pogba y Tchouameni. El lateral derecho y el lateral izquierdo estaban jugando en una posición más avanzada de lo normal y eso compensa la falta de más centrocampistas, pero creo que este fue un factor que ayudó a explicar por qué España pudo tomar el control del balón.
Un aspecto importante de Francia es que con delanteros como Benzema, Mbappé o Griezmann, el equipo realmente no necesita demasiada posesión del balón para crear jugadas de ataque valiosas. Mbappé por sí solo es capaz de liderar contraataques súper rápidos que pueden ser efectivos contra cualquier equipo.
Mbappé, sin embargo, no causó demasiado peligro durante la primera mitad. Es difícil entender por qué su rendimiento parece disminuir un poco cuando juega con Francia, pero noto que está demasiado emocionado por jugar junto a Benzema, y esto hace que tome malas decisiones. Como es un jugador de clase mundial, obviamente hace grandes jugadas de vez en cuando, pero podría ser mucho mejor y marcar muchos más goles.
Gavi hizo un par de movimientos sorprendentemente buenos aprovechando el control que Busquets y Rodri tenían sobre el medio campo. Pogba, por su parte, estaba muy activo en todo el campo pero no podía evitar que los jugadores españoles movieran el balón según sus deseos.
Comenzó la segunda mitad y el ataque de España siguió siendo dinámico, me recordó al ataque del Chelsea de la temporada pasada cuando ganó la Liga de Campeones con Havertz, Mount y Werner como su trío de ataque. Pensé que había algunas similitudes porque ninguno de los tríos tiene un goleador de clase mundial, y ambos están compuestos por jugadores que cambian constantemente de posición entre sí.
El mejor intento de gol hasta ese momento en todo el partido ocurrió alrededor del minuto 63. Francia atacaba por la banda izquierda y Benzema cruzó el balón al área donde lo esperaba Theo Hernández, y de inmediato hace un gran disparo ¡pero va directo al poste! Fue casi un gol, pero desafortunadamente para los franceses, el balón no rebotó dentro de la red.
Ese intento de gol activó algo en los equipos porque pocos segundos después de que eso sucediera, España logró marcar su primer gol. Todo empezó a suceder muy rápido. Oyarzabal recibe el balón de Busquets, pelea por el balón contra Upamecano y logra hacer un disparo cruzado desde dentro del área que se fue dentro de la red. Fue un gran gol para él y le dio a España una ventaja de 1 gol.
Luego, alrededor de 1-2 minutos después, Francia marcó el empate con un increíble gol de Benzema. El partido se estaba volviendo loco y los goles finalmente estaban llegando. Benzema recibió un pase normal de Mbappé, estaba fuera del área hacia la parte izquierda del campo que es donde suelen estar Benzema y Mbappé, e hizo un disparo increíble desde el borde del área que se fue directo a la esquina superior opuesta de la red. Ha sido uno de los mejores goles que he visto en las últimas semanas, y sin duda uno de los mejores que ha marcado Benzema jugando para Francia. Completamente hermoso y el partido quedó empatado una vez más. En 3 minutos hicieron 3 grandes jugadas de ataque y 2 goles.
Después de esos minutos locos, la intensidad del partido aumentó, España ya no tenía el control total del medio campo y Pogba comenzó a ser mucho más participativo. Ambos equipos intentaban marcar su segundo gol y ambos atacaban constantemente. Dado que Francia tiene los mejores y más rápidos jugadores de ataque, pensé que esto los beneficiaría, pero el empate permaneció bastante tiempo hasta que sucedió el segundo gol.
El segundo gol francés sucede alrededor los 80 minutos, fue una jugada muy rápida con Theo Hernández corriendo directo hacia el área española, rápidamente se da cuenta de que hay espacio libre frente a Mbappé por lo que pasa el balón y de repente vemos que Mbappé está solo frente al portero y marca fácilmente. No olvidemos que Mbappé es uno de los delanteros más rápidos del mundo, por lo que dejar espacios abiertos a su disposición es muy peligroso. El disparo de Mbappé fue sencillo para él debido a todo el espacio y tiempo que tenía para decidir qué hacer con el balón. Este gol permitió que Francia comenzara a concentrarse un poco más en su defensa, y España comenzó a desesperarse cada vez más a medida que el reloj seguía corriendo.
Oyarzabal estuvo a punto de marcar su segundo gol en el minuto 88, pero el disparo fue detenido épicamente por el portero francés. Los jugadores españoles atacaban sin cesar y lo único que hacía Francia en esos minutos finales era defender su ventaja de 1 gol. Mbappé estaba ahora fijado alrededor de la línea del medio campo, y eso dice mucho.
Los ataques de España hacia el final del partido fueron tan intensos, que hubo un saque de esquina en el minuto 94, y Simon, el portero español, fue allí para intentar ayudar a su equipo a marcar. Esa jugada acabó con un buen disparo español pero fue detenido por el portero francés.
Al final, Francia obtuvo una victoria muy intensa y ahora compensó a su afición tras su horrible fracaso en la Eurocopa. Ambos equipos jugaron bien, y este partido es ahora otro ejemplo de que controlar el balón no significa que el equipo vaya a ganar. Francia solo tuvo alrededor del 36% de la posesión del balón, pero como tenía los mejores delanteros, ganó la final.
Esta victoria aumenta las posibilidades de que Benzema gane el Balón de Oro, y planeo discutir esto en el futuro.
¿Qué sigue?
Los partidos del club finalmente volverán el próximo fin de semana, las ligas europeas y la Liga de Campeones volverán con muchos partidos geniales y continuaré viéndolos y discutiéndolos.
"El Clásico" se llevará a cabo en 2 semanas, y aunque ambos equipos no están en su mejor momento, este es siempre un partido emocionante con millones de personas en todo el mundo viéndolo. Ese partido seguramente le dará al ganador un importante impulso emocional para el resto de la temporada.

Spain has been going through an important generational change in the past few years. There are a lot of new young players becoming more and more important in the national selection, and that team is surely becoming more competitive as time goes on. There are obviously a lot of talented Spanish football players thanks to all the professional teams from that country, and Luis Enrique is doing a good job renovating the team with younger generations.
France, on the other hand, is the current world champion and at least for me, they were also the favorites to win the Euro since the beginning of that tournament. They are now including Benzema as the central striker, which means the team is now capable of creating more advanced attacking combinations. They won the World Cup with Giroud as the central striker, but I believe the majority of people realize Benzema is better even though the team is now not performing as well as in the World Cup.
In the semifinals of the Nations League, they played against the Netherlands and they achieved a miraculous victory after having a 2 goal disadvantage during the first half. In the end, they won that match 2-3 and they proved they are a solid team that can overcome extremely challenging situations.
When comparing the 2 lineups man to man, I believe France is the better team especially thanks to their world-class attacking trio with Benzema, Mbappe and Griezmann, Spain's attacking trio is with Oyarzabal, Sarabia and Torres. However, back in the Euro, Spain proved to the world they are candidates to win any tournament, so I was expecting a very even match with beautiful football.
I was surprised to see Gavi included in the Spanish lineup, this is a very young player from Barcelona and he hasn't played a lot of professional matches so far. His performance has been good but since he has only played a handful of times I didn't expect to see him in the lineup of such an important match for the national selection. But after watching this match, I can say I understand why Luis Enrique included him since he certainly provides high performance and is very useful for his team.
How was the match?
France was dominant at the beginning but not by much. They had a good opportunity to score a goal with Benzema but in my opinion, he was offside so any goal would have been invalidated. The match was very disputed but it was also as if the 2 teams were measuring each other. There weren't many dangerous attacking plays during the first half, and Spain's most important shot was a free-kick by Marcos Alonso which didn't even go inside the net.
Spain slowly gained control over the ball and became the dominant team for a good while. It is surprising how Spain manages to always take control of the ball against any team and even after important generational changes within their own squad. Busquets and Rodri did an excellent job taking control of the midfield, and this allowed Gavi and the Spanish attacking trio to attempts some interesting attacking plays.
Something that might have harmed France's intentions, was the tactical decisions of their coach to play with only 2 natural midfielders, Pogba and Tchouameni. The right-back and left-back were playing in a more advanced position than normal and that kind of compensates for the lack of more midfielders, but I believe this was a factor that help explain why Spain was able to take control of the ball.
One important aspect of France is that with strikers such as Benzema, Mbappe, or Griezmann, the team doesn't really need too much ball possession to create valuable attacking plays. Mbappe alone is able to lead super-fast counterattacks that can be effective against any team.
Mbappe, however, didn't cause too much danger during the first half. It is hard to understand why his performance seems to decrease a little bit when he is playing with France but I notice he is kind of overly excited about playing together with Benzema, and this causes him to take bad decisions. Since he is a world-class player he obviously does some great plays now and then, but he could be much better and score many more goals.
Gavi did a couple of surprisingly good moves taking advantage of the control Busquets and Rodri had over the midfield. Pogba, on the other hand, was being very active all over the pitch but unable to stop the Spanish players from moving the ball according to their wishes.
The second half started and Spain's attack continued to be dynamic, it reminded me of Chelsea's attack from last season when they won the Champions League with Havertz, Mount, and Werner as their attacking trio. I thought there were some similarities because neither trio has a world-class goalscorer, and both of them are composed of players who are constantly switching positions with each other.
The best goal attempt up to that moment in the entire match happened around the 63-minute mark. France was attacking over the left side and Benzema crossed the ball into the area where Theo Hernandez was waiting for it, and he immediately makes a great shot but it goes straight towards the post! It was almost a goal but unfortunately for the French players, the ball didn't bounce inside the net.
That goal attempt activated something in the teams because a few seconds after that happened, Spain managed to score their first goal. Everything began to happen so fast. Oyarzabal receives the ball from Busquets, he battles for the ball against Upamecano and manages to make a crossed shot from inside the area that went inside the net. It was a great goal for him and gave Spain a 1 goal advantage.
Then, around 1-2 minutes later, France scored the tie with an incredible goal by Benzema. The match was getting crazy and the goals were finally happening. Benzema received a normal pass from Mbappe, he was outside the area towards the left part of the pitch which is where Benzema and Mbappe usually are, and somehow he did an incredible shot from the border of the area that went directly to the opposite top bins of the net. It was one of the best goals I have seen in recent weeks, and certainly one of the best ones scored by Benzema while playing for France. Completely beautiful and the match was tied once again. In 3 minutes we had 3 great attacking plays and 2 goals.
After those crazy minutes, the intensity of the match increased, Spanish wasn't completely in control of the midfield anymore, and Pogba's started to be much more participative. Both teams were trying to score their second goal and both of them were constantly attacking. Since France has the best and faster attacking players I thought this would benefit them, but the tie remaining for quite some time until the second goal happened.
The second French goal was around the 80-minute mark, it was a very fast play with Theo Hernandez running straight towards the Spanish area, he quickly notices there is open space in front of Mbappe so he passes the ball and suddenly we see Mbappe is alone in front of the goalkeeper and he easily scores. Let's not forget Mbappe is one of the fastest strikers in the entire world, so leaving open spaces available to him is very dangerous. Mbappe's shot was simple for him due to all the space and time he had to decide what to do with the ball. This goal allowed France to begin to focus a little bit more on their defensive, and Spain started to become more and more desperate as the clock kept ticking.
Oyarzabal almost scores his second goal in the 88-minute mark but the shot was epically stopped by the French goalkeeper. The Spanish players were attacking unceasingly and all France was doing in those final minutes was to defend their 1 goal advantage. Mbappe was positioned around the midfield line, and that says a lot.
Spain's attacks towards the end of the match were so intense, that there was a corner kick at the 94-minute mark, and Simon, the Spanish goalkeeper, went there to try and help his team score. That play ended in a good Spanish shot but it was stopped by the French goalkeeper.
In the end, France obtained a very intense victory and they now compensated their fans after their horrible failure in the UEFA Euro. Both teams played well, and this match is now another example that controlling the ball doesn't mean the team will win. France only had around 36% of the ball possession, but since they had the better strikers, they won the final.
This victory increases the chances of Benzema to win the Ballon d'Or, and I plan to discuss this sometime in the future.
What's next?
Club's matches will finally return next weekend, the European leagues and the Champions League will come back with a lot of cool matches and I will continue to watch and discuss them.
"El Clasico" will take place in 2 weeks, and even though both teams aren't at their best, this is always an exciting match with millions of people all over the world watching it. That match will surely give the winner an important emotional impulse for the rest of the season.
