Hace un par de horas vi mi primer partido de fútbol del año, Real Madrid vs Getafe. Muchos equipos españoles están sufriendo ausencias importantes debido a que varios jugadores se enferman de covid, por lo que en casi todos los partidos hay equipos que pueden sentirse incompletos. La ausencia más importante en este partido fue la de Vinicius, el jugador del Real Madrid que juega como extremo izquierdo y viene brindando una actuación de talla mundial desde el comienzo de la temporada.

El Real Madrid terminó el año en muy buen lugar, actualmente en la primera posición de la liga española y con una buena ventaja en puntos. El Getafe, en cambio, está luchando duro para no pasar a Segunda División. Actualmente están fuera de peligro porque los equipos descendentes son los 3 en la parte inferior de la tabla y el Getafe está fuera de esa zona, pero están bastante cerca y esto es un riesgo preocupante para este equipo.

¿Cómo estuvo el partido?

El partido empezó muy parejo, algo que no me esperaba, con ambos equipos moviendo el balón y creando sus propias jugadas de ataque.

El primer gol pasó muy rápido y esto fue un poco sorprendente. El Getafe se sentía cómodo atacando al Real Madrid, y en una jugada Militao recibe el balón dentro del área con Unal, un atacante del Getafe, muy cerca de él. Toma una decisión arriesgada y se vuelve hacia su portero, pero mientras lo hace, Unal es capaz de quitarle el balón y marca fácilmente con un tiro cruzado. El gol fue totalmente culpa de Militao, y cometer estos errores no es normal para él, pero tampoco es la primera vez que sucede.

A couple of hours ago I watched my first football match of the year, Real Madrid vs Getafe. Many Spanish teams are currently suffering important absences due to several players getting sick with covid, so in pretty much every match, there are teams that can feel incomplete. The most important absence in this match was Vinicius, the Real Madrid player who plays as a left-winger and has been providing a world-class performance since the beginning of the season.

Real Madrid finished the year in a very good spot, currently in the first position of the Spanish league and with a decent advantage points-wise. Getafe, on the other hand, is fighting hard to not go to the second division. They are currently out of danger because the descending teams are the 3 on the bottom of the table and Getafe is out of that zone, but they are quite close and this is a worrisome risk for this team.

How was the match?

The match started in a very even way which is something I wasn't expecting, with both teams moving the ball around, and creating their own attacking plays.

The first goal happened very quickly and this was a bit surprising. Getafe was feeling comfortable attacking Real Madrid, and in one play, Militao receives the ball inside the area with Unal, a Getafe attacker, very close to him. He takes a risky decision and turns back towards his goalkeeper, but while doing this, Unal is able to take the ball away from him and easily scores with a crossed shot. The goal was entirely Militao's fault, and committing these mistakes isn't normal for him, but it is also not the first time it happens.

Tras el gol, el Real Madrid rápidamente empezó a acelerar el ritmo del partido y a ser mucho más intenso en su búsqueda de jugadas de ataque. El jugador con mejores oportunidades de gol en los siguientes minutos fue Modric, no solo hizo un disparo lejano que casi se convierte en gol, sino que también hubo una jugada colectiva que terminó con un disparo suyo desde el borde del área, y la pelota pegó en el poste.

El Real Madrid estaba jugando muy bien y si seguía jugando así, estaba claro que el gol sería solo cuestión de tiempo. El Getafe se estaba arrinconando en su propio lado del campo y no estaban creando más jugadas de ataque como al comienzo del partido. Aunque todavía podrían crear peligro con contraataques rápidos si surgiera la oportunidad.

Los minutos iban pasando y el Real Madrid seguía sin poder marcar su primer gol. Ahora tenían el control total del partido, pero el sistema defensivo del Getafe era lo suficientemente fuerte como para resistir cualquier ataque del Real Madrid. Muchos de los ataques terminaron con disparos desde fuera del área o desde su borde, y sobre todo de Modric, Kroos y Benzema. El Real Madrid fue incapaz de crear mucho peligro desde el interior del área, y no econtraron una solución fácil para eso. Los jugadores estaban muy frustrados, pero aún quedaba mucho tiempo para jugar.

El Real Madrid no tenía mucha chispa a la hora de meterse en el área, y se notaba mucho la ausencia de Vinicius. Tanto Asensio como Rodrygo no estaban teniendo mucho impacto en el partido, y en el caso de Rodrygo, todavía está claro que necesita más fuerza física para resistir los asaltos y empujones de otros jugadores. Este partido fue una gran oportunidad para estos 2 extremos, pero lamentablemente para ellos, no demostraron nada en la primera parte.

After the goal, Real Madrid quickly began to increase the pace of the match and being much more intense in their look for attacking plays. The player with the best goal opportunities in the next few minutes was Modric, he not only did a long shot that almost became a goal, but there was also a collective play that finished with a shot from him from the border of the area, and the ball hit the post.

Real Madrid was playing very good and if they kept playing like this, it was clear the goal would be just a matter of time. Getafe was getting cornered into their own side of the pitch, and they weren't creating more attacking plays like at the beginning of the match. They still could create danger with fast counterattacks if the opportunity arose.

The minutes kept passing, and Real Madrid was still unable to score their first goal. They were now in complete control of the match, but Getafe's defensive system was strong enough to resist any attack coming from Real Madrid. Many of the attacks ended with shots from outside the area or from its border, and mostly from Modric, Kroos, and Benzema. Real Madrid was unable to create much danger from inside the area, and there was no easy solution for this. The players were getting very frustrated but there was still a lot of time left to play.

Real Madrid didn't have much spark when trying to get into the area, and the absence of Vinicius was very noticeable. Both Asensio and Rodrygo weren't having much of an impact in the match, and in the case of Rodrygo, it is still clear he needs more physical strength in order to resist the assaults and pushes from other players. This match was a great opportunity for these 2 wingers, but sadly for them, they didn't prove anything in the first half.

La decisión de Ancelotti para la segunda parte fue introducir a Hazard y Marcelo en el terreno de juego a cambio de Mendy y Asensio. No entiendo por qué mandó al banquillo a Asensio y no a Rodrygo, porque en mi opinión Asensio estaba jugando mejor. Marcelo es un poco mejor atacando que Mendy, y como el Real Madrid necesitaba mejorar sus ataques, esta sustitución tenía sentido. Sin embargo, eliminar a Mendy también significó que el equipo fuera mucho más vulnerable en su defensa.

El Getafe pasó la mayor parte de la segunda parte dentro o al menos alrededor de los límites de su área defendiendo su ventaja de 1 gol con bastante eficacia y lo único que hacía el Real Madrid era atacar una y otra vez. Este partido dejó muy claro que el Real Madrid tiene muchos problemas para marcar goles cuando el otro equipo se centra únicamente en defender, y este problema se agrava cuando Vinicius no está en el campo.

Al final, el Real Madrid no pudo marcar a pesar de muchos intentos y el Getafe consiguió una victoria muy importante que seguramente le ayudará a mantenerse alejado de los últimos puestos de la tabla.

¿Qué sigue?

Planeo seguir viendo más partidos de liga en las próximas semanas y tal vez incluso algunos partidos de copa nacional. La Liga de Campeones no regresará hasta febrero, por lo que serán todas las competiciones nacionales durante las próximas 6-7 semanas.

Ancelotti's decision for the second half was to introduce Hazard and Marcelo into the pitch in exchange for Mendy and Asensio. I don't understand why he sent Asensio and not Rodrygo to the bench, because in my opinion, Asensio was playing better. Marcelo is a bit better when attacking compared to Mendy, and since Real Madrid needed to improve their attacks, this substitution made sense. However, removing Mendy also meant the team was much more vulnerable in their defense.

Getafe spent most of the second half inside or at least around the border of their area defending their 1 goal advantage quite effectively even though all Real Madrid was doing was attacking over and over again. This match made it very clear that Real Madrid has a lot of problems scoring goals when the other team is solely focused on defending, and this problem gets aggravated when Vinicius isn't on the pitch.

In the end, Real Madrid couldn't score despite many attempts and Getafe obtained a very important victory that will surely help them in staying away from the bottom of the table.

What's next?

I plan to continue watching more league matches in the coming weeks and maybe even some national cup matches. The Champions League won't return until February so it is all national competitions for the next 6-7 weeks.
