Coumshingaun Lake: My Actifit Report Card: May 7 2024
Our destination for this walk today is a hike to see Coumshingaun lake at Kilclooney. There is a circular walk which takes four hours around the rim of this mountain. But today we only had time to get a glimpse of the lake and get back down which took us 1.5 hours.
Starting off from the car park through a small forest area emerging into a rocky track. This is a moderately difficult climb and can be steep in parts.
Next there is a thick area of gorse where a rough track bisects it. The yellow flowers are magnificent.
Emerging from the gorse an open area now with scattered rocks and sheep grazing. The track seems less defined here and branches in all directions. So climbing is tricky amongst the many fallen rocks.
At last we start to get glimpses of the lake, if we stray off the tracks slightly to get a better view. But keeping to the ridge is better as you climb otherwise the effort is much worse!
The views are amazing! Even only half way up! I turned to take some pictures of the surroundings. It took my breath away.
A final picture of the lake before turning back as we were short of time. It was a shame as I really wanted to see the lake from the top. We plan to come back another time with a better plan and more time!
