Parkrun Cancelled - a slightly frustrating start to my week off (and a more positive injury update)

Whoop whoop! Its a Saturday, and its not just the start of the weekend, but the start of a weeks holiday! We're not going anywhere of course, partly 'cause its Winter, but mostly 'cause we're poor, but its a week away from Work and thats always a good thing.

I have a list of jobs as long as my arm, and its great to final get some time to catch up and stuff sorted. There's also time to do fun things and go for days out walking and bird spotting, which we didn't manage to do over the festive period as we were both so busy.

The first 'fun' thing I wanted to do was parkrun, which takes place at 9am on Saturday morning, and would be a great way to start off my week on holiday

...er except when I logged onto facebook yesterday evening I saw the below post:

Cancelled?!

Damn it!

We've been putting up with frozen temps and ice here in the UK for the past week, and it looks like my local parkrun has been a casualty of the weather conditions. A couple of people have grumbled, but I think its the right move my the organizers. Its not worth the risk of injury for the sake of a 30 minute jog around a park. And as an organizer, they'd leave themselves open to potential legal action if anyone hurt themselves

And it wasn't just Lincoln:

The other 2 parkruns that are local to me, Doddington Hall and Yarborough, both cancelled their events for the same reason... the ice had already starting building up during Friday evening, and with sub zero temperatures overnight and then freezing fog, the conditions were not going to improve.

and it's not just on the course, many people walk, run or cycle to their local parkruns, and the surrounding conditions are icy as well.

This was my view at 8:30 this morning

Not gonna lie, I love cold, crisp mornings like these, and I think it looks beautiful... but don't let that fool you, it is treacherous out there. I took 3 steps outside my front door to take this picture, and nearly slipped over twice in the process!

I'm definitely not running this morning. I might try a little one after lunch, but to be fair conditions are better tomorrow, so I might just leave it until then. Besides, I've got plenty of jobs to be getting on with, and many of those are inside, so I'll be sticking with those today!

On a more positive note, my Sports Therapist sent me an email last night.

On our last session, after I'd had the massage, we were talking about other ways I could help manage the injury. I mentioned that the stretches she had advised in our first session, had made some difference (particularly the calf stretch), but I already had pretty good mobility in my hips. She said she'd think about it and see what else she could come up with, and I received the below email last night

These are the 2 videos on youtube

The first one is 15 minutes, and the 2nd is 5 minutes, and both feature a number of different exercises to try

I have watched both and tried some of the exercises. They do seem to affect the area where the pain is coming from, so hopefully after doing these for a few days I will be able to see some improvements.

I will of course keep up my other stretches (calf, groin and quads) and will also keep running little and often (5-10km), and will cross my fingers for some improvements as I'm starting to get a little bored of this!

Next up, we are going to head into town for a few things, and for some food shopping as well. It will give me a chance to see how the conditions are out there, and all being well, I'll be able to go for a run later this afternoon

Our parkrun was cancelled too. I had volunteered as they were desperate again. The team may have been out checking the course this morning. I think they are usually there by 7:30 to inspect and put out the various cones. Some people will complain about it being cancelled, but I wonder how often they volunteer. It's just a fun run, but people get serious about their 'streak'.

We went shopping instead and saw a few runners around. Need to be careful when it's this frosty.

Good luck with the injury. I ought to do more exercises, but I am considering joining the gym.

I think ours would normally be checked first thing in the morning, but with conditions as they were, the decision to cancel was made earlier to save any unnecessary travel... and yep I expect there were a number of complaints, if people really wanted to run then they can just go out on their own.

I managed to get my saturday run completed eventually, at 4pm before the freezing fog rolled in!

I'm sure most of us could benefit from strength training, my issue is that I enjoy running more, and would always prefer a run outside compared to the Gym. I was a member of one 2 years ago, and could never find the motivation to go.

Don't let me put you off though! It'll be interesting to see how you get on if you do join one :-)

It looks like a few people went to another nearby that never seems to have ice issues. That's partly due to it being on rough ground and slopes.

I used a gym years ago before I started running. I can give it a go for a few month anyway.

Whenever a program is cancelled, it is very sad because we have been preparing for this for a long time, but when the program does not take place due to snow or any other reason. I'm sorry later today I'm looking for an online job for office work if anyone knows please let me know.
