We watched the #9 team in the nation knock off the #6 - UC vs Davis & Elkins (Division II Men's Soccer)
Last Wednesday evening @flowerbaby and I made plans to go to another local college soccer game. This time it was more Division II action and it was two of the best teams in the entire nation.
#6 Davis & Elkins was visiting to play #9 University of Charleston.
Earlier in the year, D&E won at home 2-1. I was hoping things would go differently here in Charleston and much later in the year. Thankfully, they did.
About a week or so ago, D&E was undefeated and ranked #1 in all of Division II. This isn't nearly as popular as Division I play, but being ranked that high still means something to these players and the fans.
Back in 2019 UC won the National Championship. Plus they are in the same Mountain East Conference as D&E. On top of that, both teams are from the rural state of West Virginia. It's safe to say there is somewhat of a rivalry between these two teams.
This match was set to start late at 7 pm and my goodness was it cold on this evening. It was about 40°F and everyone was bundled up just to stay warm. I think this may have kept the crowd from being as big as it could have been. The coaches were wearing winter coats on the field during warm-ups. Some of the players were even wearing gloves. This didn't stop anybody from getting out on the field and playing their hardest.
Throughout the entire match, we witnessed fans from D&E talking shit to the UC players on the field. They were even making fun of the home team's cheerleaders. I'm pretty sure they were just upset about their women's team losing 3-4 to UC earlier that evening. Eventually, some UC students started going back at the girls with insults and the girls quickly lost their cool. It was a perfect example of "If you can't take it, don't dish it out".
The first half was very close, but to me, it seemed that UC was clearly the better team despite not being ranked as high nationally. This was proven by them knocking in the first goal of the match during the 36th minute. This actually turned out to be the only goal scored through 90 minutes of play.
The second half was a different story. UC still played well but was much more defensive this time around. D&E was fighting with everything they had to even the score. They had numerous well-placed shots, but UC's goalie was unbeatable with 9 saves in total.
By the end of regulation, it was 0-1 and UC was victorious. The team went crazy and started celebrating their upset over their in-state rival. It was difficult to wade through the thick crowd of students who were congratulating their team for showing that they are just as good, if not better than D&E.
We may have frozen our asses off at this game, but I still had a great time. I'm excited to see if UC is able to make it deep into the NCAA tournament again. If they bring home another national championship, then surely the country will realize they are one of the best Division II soccer programs in the USA.

underdogs winning is always fun.
The teams were evenly matched, but UC had lost to D&E once this year. I was happy to see them win when it mattered most.
Hello dear friend @daltono good day
There is nothing better than a night of football in the company of the people we love, a pity that it was so cold, but even so, they had a great time
Beautiful shots, I appreciate you sharing with us
have a great day
Even though it was freezing cold, we still got to watch an awesome game. It was very much a defensive match, but one well worth seeing through until the end.
I hope you had fun and you enjoyed every part of the game.
Thank you. Yes we certainly did, besides the cold weather.
It was a good game man.You must have enjoyed it. I am now watching cricket T20 World Cup,then ⚽.😂
It was close the entire time, such a battle. I've actually never watched a match of cricket in my life, but am hyped for the World Cup next month though!
It looks like a really great match, man. I love watching these games too. There can be some interesting gems in college teams. Even if it's a low probability.
Even though there was only one goal, it still was exciting from start to finish. I'm glad that we went.
Hope you enjoyed the game brother
For the results you bring us, it is one of the best soccer schools in your country and in the NCAA, I hope they win the national tournament and deserve their recognition for the great work they do
Even though it is only Division II, the team's record is still impressive. I hope they win it all again.
Davis & Elkins were clearly the favorites to win the match but the underdog had other plans in store for them. As the popular saying goes "its not the size of the dog but the fight in the dog that matters".
University of Charleston fought through the cold and got the win and made their home advantage count. So it's official then the male and female team of D&E lost to their opponents, the male & female team of UC.
I hope they continue to impress in the division. Hope you are doing great? ☺️
Especially since D&E already beat UC once near the beginning of the season. I'm glad that my local team was able to get the very important win.
Dang! those are some good graphics!!
oh wait, is the for a game review? my bad.. :P
yea! worth the freeze for a good game!!
😊😉😎🤙🥶❄
Believe it or not, these photos are actually real. Hard to know for sure these days as good as video games look now.
the important thing is to have fun and if you can win even better, I hope you can win the NCAA title again this year. A question my friend, it's so cold at this time of year, I don't even want to imagine what will happen later
I'm pretty sure that after the game, most of the D&E team didn't have fun. They all let anger get the best of them and it showed multiple times during the match.
I guess they don't know how to lose and that's very frustrating sometimes
