Memphis Grizzlies 2024-2025 Season So Far: Grit, Grind, and an Unstoppable Force
As a Memphis Grizzlies fan, I’ve lived and breathed almost every game of this 2024-2025 season. If you’re like me, you know that this team isn’t just playing basketball — they’re making a statement. The Grizzlies are the epitome of depth, resilience, and team basketball. No one is logging sky-high minutes, and that’s by design. Instead, everyone on the roster contributes, making this team a nightmare matchup on any given night. Although Ja Morant remains the heart and soul of this team, it’s clear that Jaren Jackson Jr. has taken the reins as the Grizzlies’ #1 option—and he’s been absolutely dominant on both ends of the floor. Let’s dive into what makes this season special and why this squad is destined for greatness.
The Rise of Jaren Jackson Jr. as the Grizzlies’ #1 Option
Let’s start with the obvious: Jaren Jackson Jr. is playing out of his mind and his recent All-Star selection is proof of that. He’s evolved from being a shot-blocking specialist into a two-way powerhouse. His offensive arsenal is deeper than ever, with a smooth three-point shot, mid-range touch, handles, and improved footwork in the post. What’s been truly impressive is his ability to impose his will on games. Need a clutch three? He’s got you. Want someone to put the clamps on the opposing team’s best forward? JJJ is already in his face. He has even gotten his foul problems under control.
Jackson’s stats are living proof of his dominance. He’s averaging career highs in points, rebounds, and assists while continuing to lead the league in blocks per game. What sets him apart isn’t just the raw numbers, though — it’s his ability to anchor both ends of the floor. His defense is suffocating, and he’s always in the right spot to alter or block shots. The phrase “unstoppable on both sides of the ball” doesn’t feel like an exaggeration; it feels like a fact.
Ja Morant: The Heart and Soul of Memphis
Even though Jaren has stepped up as the team’s go-to guy, Ja Morant remains the heartbeat of this team. His absence over the past few games due to shoulder soreness was a reminder of just how much energy, playmaking, and leadership he brings. Ja’s ability to slice through defenses and create scoring opportunities is unmatched. His highlight-reel plays ignite the crowd, but it’s his presence off the court and in the huddle that keeps the team focused.
Thankfully, the injury is being treated as short-term, and Ja should be back soon. The good news? The Grizzlies haven’t skipped a beat in his absence, and that speaks volumes about their depth.
Desmond Bane: The Perfect Fit, Even with Diminished Numbers
Desmond Bane’s stats might be slightly down this season, but make no mistake—he’s still one of the most important pieces on this team. Bane’s ability to space the floor with his three-point shooting, combined with his underrated defensive skills, makes him a perfect fit alongside Ja and Jaren. He’s also been willing to take a step back and let others shine, which is a testament to his selflessness and understanding of the bigger picture.
Bane’s shooting efficiency remains solid, and when the Grizzlies need a knockdown shooter to hit a clutch shot, he’s still the guy. His value isn’t always measured in points but in the way he forces defenses to stay honest and open up lanes for Ja and Jaren.
Luke Kennard: A Sniper Lethal from Beyond the Arc
Luke Kennard deserves his flowers. He’s shooting the lights out yet again this season, and when I say he’s a sniper, I mean it. His presence on the floor is a constant threat to opposing defenses. Kennard’s three-point percentage ranks among the best in the league, and his ability to catch fire is game-changing. One or two threes from him in quick succession can completely swing momentum in Memphis’ favor. The guy even runs point when sometimes when Ja is out.
Defensively, he’s no liability either, and that’s a big reason why he fits into Taylor Jenkins’ system so seamlessly. Kennard’s ability to provide instant offense off the bench or as a starter gives the team another dynamic weapon.
The Rookies: Zach Edey and Jalen Wells
This season has been a pleasant surprise thanks to the stellar play of rookies Zach Edey and Jalen Wells. Both have not only been in the running for Rookie of the Year but have also started the majority of games for Memphis.
• Zach Edey: The big man is a force in the paint. His size and strength make him an imposing presence on the boards and as a rim protector. While he’s shown some occasional clumsiness — expected for a rookie big man—he’s learning quickly. His footwork is improving, and he’s showing flashes of dominance that could turn him into a long-term cornerstone.
• Jalen Wells: Wells is already guarding the best player on opposing teams, and that says everything you need to know about his trust level with the coaching staff. He’s physical, quick, and has a high basketball IQ. Offensively, he’s shown he can contribute, but it’s his defense that’s making waves. Wells fits the “grit and grind” identity of Memphis perfectly.
Marcus Smart: A Disappointment So Far?
Marcus Smart was supposed to be a key addition, bringing championship experience and elite defense. Unfortunately, injuries have kept him off the floor for much of the season. When he’s played, his impact has been solid, but the Grizzlies haven’t seen enough of him to fully assess his value. Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing him moved before the trade deadline for a player who can stay healthy and contribute consistently.
Brandon Clarke: Back and Better
Brandon Clarke’s return from an Achilles injury has been one of the feel-good stories of the season. Clarke’s athleticism and energy were sorely missed last season, but he’s back to his high-flying ways. His ability to provide rim protection, finish lobs, and crash the boards off the bench has been a major boost.
Santi Aldama: Mr. Reliable
If there’s one word to describe Santi Aldama this season, it’s “reliable.” Whether he’s starting or coming off the bench, Aldama consistently gives the Grizzlies a lift. He’s developed into one of the most reliable bench players in the league, providing scoring, rebounding, and hustle.
The Supporting Cast: Key Contributions Across the Board
The Grizzlies’ depth goes beyond the usual names. Players like Jay Huff, GG Jackson, Jake LaRavia, and Scotty Pippen Jr. have all made meaningful contributions. Jay Huff’s rim protection, GG Jackson’s scoring potential, and LaRavia’s versatility, and Pippen’s poise at point are all reasons why the Grizzlies remain one of the deepest teams in the league. Plus we still have Vince Williams Jr‘a return to look forward to.
A Team Built for Playoff Success
This Grizzlies team has the pieces to go deep in the playoffs. The combination of a dominant star in Jaren Jackson Jr., an electrifying point guard in Ja Morant, and a supporting cast that knows its role makes them dangerous. With rookies stepping up, veterans finding their stride, and a coach who understands how to maximize talent, Memphis fans have every reason to believe this season could be special.
One caveat, they are playing in the Western conference, which is as competitive as it gets. There are at least half a dozen teams who are also loaded up with talent and could make a deep playoff run. The only thing left is to see how far this Memphis team can take us. One thing is for sure: I’ll be watching the games, living and breathing every moment. Let’s keep grinding, Memphis.

Yes, thank goodness. They removed me from the blacklist last night.
