La Champions definitivamente es la competición suprema a nivel de clubes, no hay otra que la pueda igualar. Hoy fuimos testigos una vez más de una excelente remontada, esta vez por parte del Dortmund quien le dio vuelta al marcador luego de venir perdiendo por la mínima en la ida. El PSG también hizo lo suyo ante el Barcelona, pero me enfocaré en lo que se vivió en Alemania.

Lo primero que quiero aclarar es que no fue un gran partido a pesar de los 6 goles que hubo, se convirtió en una noche mágica por la remontada del Borussia, pero en líneas generales el encuentro se convirtió en un “toma y dame” sin mucho que apreciar a nivel táctico.

Ambas defensas estuvieron con un nivel muy por debajo de lo esperado, de hecho eso fue la causa de tantos goles, y me sorprendió que el Atlético de Madrid encajara tantos cuando son un equipo que saben defender muy bien. El planteamiento del Cholo posiblemente será cuestionado porque inicio con una formación de 3-5-2 pudiendo haber comenzado con 4 defensas para tratar de sostener la ventaja conseguida en casa.

The Champions League is definitely the supreme competition at club level, there is no other that can match it. Today we witnessed once again an excellent comeback, this time by Dortmund who turned the score around after coming from behind in the first leg. PSG also did their part against Barcelona, but I will focus on what happened in Germany.

The first thing I want to clarify is that it was not a great game despite the 6 goals, it became a magical night for Borussia's comeback, but in general terms the game became a "give and take" without much to appreciate at a tactical level.

Both defenses were at a much lower level than expected, in fact that was the cause of so many goals, and I was surprised that Atletico Madrid conceded so many when they are a team that know how to defend very well. Cholo's approach will possibly be questioned because he started with a 3-5-2 formation when he could have started with 4 defenders to try to sustain the advantage gained at home.

En ocasiones iniciar con 5 mediocampistas es positivo porque impide la subida de algunos jugadores del equipo rival y ayuda a tener una mejor posesión en el centro de la cancha, pero esta estrategia no le funciono a los colchoneros, tuvo un efecto contrario y en menos de 5 minutos los locales estuvieron muy cerca de adelantarse en el marcador e igualar la serie.

Álvaro Morata una vez más tuvo una ocasión clara y la desperdició, como en muchas ocasiones suele hacerlo. Desde sus inicios ha sido un problema recurrente en su carrera, y por eso no es un delantero top a pesar de tener muy buenas habilidades. Con la Juve ha sido su mejor momento, pero en los demás clubes no ha rendido. Considero que colocarlo como titular fue un total desacierto por Simeone. Su gol errado pudo cambiar el ánimo de los locales y eso posiblemente habría tenido un gran peso en el desarrollo del encuentro.

Me resulto difícil pensar que el Atlético pudiera aguantar, toda la primera mitad luego del yerro de Morata se jugó a una sola cancha y el Dortmund no dejaba de presionar con pases de un lado a otro, así fue abriendo la defensa y en un intervalo de 5 minutos anoto dos goles para irse con superioridad global al descanso.

Sometimes starting with 5 midfielders is positive because it prevents the rise of some players of the opposing team and helps to have a better possession in the center of the field, but this strategy did not work for the colchoneros, it had the opposite effect and in less than 5 minutes the locals were very close to go ahead on the scoreboard and equalize the series.

Álvaro Morata once again had a clear chance and missed it, as he often does. Since his early days it has been a recurring problem in his career, and that is why he is not a top striker despite having very good skills. With Juve has been his best moment, but in the other clubs he has not performed. I consider that placing him as a starter was a total mistake by Simeone. His missed goal could have changed the mood of the home team and that would have possibly had a great influence on the development of the match.

I found it difficult to think that Atletico could hold on, the whole first half after Morata's mistake was played in one court and Dortmund did not stop pressing with passes from one side to the other, thus opening up the defense and in an interval of 5 minutes scored two goals to go with overall superiority to the break.

En este punto consideré un partido completamente decidido, aunque faltaba la segunda mitad el equipo colchonero no había mostrado una mentalidad ganadora en sus jugadores, sin embargo, salieron un poco mejor cuando termino el descanso y luego de un autogol de los locales marcaron el segundo a través de Correa. Honestamente, fue un mal sabor de boca debido a cómo estaba jugando el Dortmund. Quizás se confiaron de ir ganando y fueron extremadamente flojos para mantener la ventaja, y cuando el segundo gol ocurrió, las defensas estaban estáticas y Correa hizo y deshizo en el área.

Esos goles parecieron despertar a un león dormido y en cuestión de 10 minutos el Dortmund ya había anotado dos goles más, una locura realmente lo que se estaba viviendo en Alemania. Pero vuelvo al punto inicial del post, no fue un gran partido, un poco emocionante y vistoso por los goles –valga la redundancia- pero muy flojo en su desarrollo. Ambos clubes demostraron que son los más débiles de todos los que disputan cuartos, y ahora el Borussia tendrá que mejorar para superar la semifinal ante el PSG de Mbappe que tampoco es una maravilla, pero a nivel colectivo tienen un mejor juego que los alemanes y una defensa más sólida.

Por último y para concluir quiero destacar algunas labores individuales, Julian Brandt y Marcel Sabitzer fueron lo mejor del Dortmund, ambos jugadores estuvieron por encima del resto en su rendimiento y fueron completamente determinantes para que su equipo consiguiera la victoria y el pase a las semifinales. Cada uno en su posición hizo la diferencia y por momentos el cuadro español no sabía cómo detenerlos, los dos marcaron y tuvieron mucha influencia en los goles de sus compañeros. Son jugadores a tomar muy en cuenta para el avance de este equipo y su buen desempeño.

Honestly, it was a bad taste in the mouth because of the way Dortmund was playing. Perhaps they were confident of winning and were extremely lazy to hold on to the lead, and when the second goal happened, the defenses were static and Correa did and undid in the box.

Those goals seemed to wake up a sleeping lion and within 10 minutes Dortmund had already scored two more goals, crazy really what was happening in Germany. But back to the initial point of the post, it wasn't a great game, a bit exciting and eye-catching because of the goals -save the redundancy- but very weak in its development. Both clubs showed that they are the weakest of all those playing in the quarterfinals, and now Borussia will have to improve to overcome the semifinal against Mbappe's PSG, which is not a marvel either, but collectively they have a better game than the Germans and a more solid defense.

Finally and to conclude I want to highlight some individual work, Julian Brandt and Marcel Sabitzer were the best of Dortmund, both players were above the rest in their performance and were completely decisive for their team to get the victory and the pass to the semifinals. Each in his position made the difference and at times the Spanish team did not know how to stop them, both scored and had a great influence on the goals of their teammates. They are players to be taken into account for the progress of this team and its good performance.
