The season 2 of the Chess Brothers League concludes in a good way. It has been eight weeks of high competition chess in which many players have joined our initiative to massify chess in Hive.
For us it has been an honor to have a super active and passionate community for the science sport. It is precisely the title that took this season Gens una sumus, which in Latin means we are a family, which we believe characterizes our movement. Knowing that every Sunday our family will come to the online board commitment as planned at the beginning of this league is of great satisfaction for the entire CB team.
With already three months of learning, the league that takes place every Sunday continues to grow. We understand that the key to success is perseverance, and since the first game the whole team has been immersed in the development of these activities, always trying to improve as much as possible, listening to the community, accepting suggestions, adapting to changes, in short, all a reciprocal help that makes this event a great party.
Success Indicators and Results Achieved at a Glance
The main motivation for playing these tournaments, in our opinion, is the passion for the sport. Without that chess flame it would be less encouraging to play these championships. However, we also believe that the effort and preparation that each chess player has to position himself in the first places is worth a lot.
That is why, compared to the previous season, the list of awards was extended to the first eight places plus two special prizes. With this, we have managed to reward at least 11 Hive users, awarding each of them a well-deserved reward in Hive Dollars. We will release these results later, but we believe that the change has been successful as there are more players that can be benefited compared to the first season that awarded 6.
For its part, it was quite a lengthy event that spread over eight weeks. A lot happens in two months, but at least many players got into the habit of participating in the Chess Brothers Sundays, hand in hand with the other tournaments that the Hive chess community promotes.
Throughout this time we were able to implement different forms of play in terms of tournament type and time control. Even, halfway through the league, specifically from round 5 onwards, all participants were able to vote for the time control and game format of their preference, using Dpoll, the polling application running on Hive. We believe this has stimulated variety and helps to avoid monotony, as each poll had good participation, even reaching 15 votes and lots of discussion comments. Below is the link to each poll:

In total, the following time controls and game formats were played: Swiss 3+1, Swiss 3+2, Arena 3+0, Arena 4+2 and Arena 5+2 and Arena 3+0. We noticed that the community wanted to repeat Arena 5+2 and Swiss 3+2, the latter played three times in total, since it was also scheduled by the organization for one of the opening rounds. The preference is not surprising, since it is a form of play favored even by FIDE.
Likewise, the scoring system was conceived in such a way as to benefit competitiveness and consistency in the tournaments and we believe that these objectives have been met.
So, the average performance of all tournaments was 1969.125, the strongest round in terms of rating was the round 8 with 2066 average performance points, and the average rating of the top 8 finishers of all rounds was 2241.9. This is partly due to the league going beyond Hive, accepting Lichess players who do not necessarily own a Lichess account. Many high and low rated enthusiasts joined in and helped shape these results.
According to our statistics, at the end of last season, the total participation was 62 players, a figure that is very positive for us. At the close of the current edition this number increased to 70, having an average attendance in each round of 20 to 30 players.
As this is a long period of time, we had the doubt if when reaching the last encounters the participation would be maintained or would decrease. To our surprise, the number of participants remained more or less constant during the development of the season 2. We even had a peak of 40 players in round 6. Without a doubt, a spectacular number in terms of participation.
In the same vein, we must say that it is not easy to diligently attend an appointment every Sunday for 8 weeks, but 8 players have achieved perfect attendance. These are: @agreste, @pereu4uwatch, @rodrook, @rosmarly, @samostically, @stayoutoftherz, @tony1294 and @tungphong; definitely chess marathoners.
They were accompanied by 6 other players who almost achieved perfect attendance, participating 7 times. These are: @eliaschess333, @eniolw, @fjcr, @kintokris, @lighteye and @pamboy27. All of them are Hive users and players of our chess community in this blockchain. what a dedication!
At the same time, we note that, of the 70 participants of the season, 25 players have a Hive account, which represents 35.71% of the population. This is because the doors to our tournaments are open to everyone and we count them in our tables and statistics. So we appreciate everyone's participation, even if they have only peeked in once during the season.
In a span of two months in the league, all these people managed to play and accumulate a total of 716 chess games. Logically, the number of games was higher in the arena tournaments, being round 8 the one that produced the highest number of games with 113; not bad at all. The Winners of this Season 2
You will surely be anxious to meet the top performers who dominated this 2nd season. However, we would like to emphasize that for us, all participants are winners. The fact that you are there every week to show your skills at the board and have fun is the greatest victory. As we have always mentioned, consistency is key to success.

As we can appreciate, @tungphong ratifies the throne. His participation has been tenacious and uninterrupted. After starting the second half of the league he managed to gain some advantage over his closest pursuer. It was precisely this consistency that helped him maintain his lead. Clearly his playing strength gives him the place he holds today and let's hope that this extraordinary player will continue to be with us in future editions.
For his part, @samostically, another regular player in Hive, gets the runner-up position of the 2nd season in which he fought hard for the top positions and overcame the ups and downs in his games. He achieves this incredible result, improving his performance compared to season 1. A clear example of perseverance and hard dedication.
In turn, @tony1294 completes the podium of the top three players in the league. With the bronze medal the Venezuelan player continues to play admirable chess. We learned that in this edition his game was a little affected by the intermittency of internet connectivity, thus affecting the result in key games of some rounds. Nevertheless, his strong persistence allowed him to conquer the 3rd place in an undisputed way.
In 4th place goes to @kintokris, another Nigerian exponent who accumulated 42 points with an attendance of 7 rounds. Although he ranks among the top, his performance is below his final rating, indicating that he had a brush with opponents of varied rating, scoring well enough to take 4th place alone.
@Fjcr got 5th place with a performance exceeding 2100 rating points, indicating that throughout the league he kept facing stronger players with positive results. In fact, in one of our reports we reviewed a game of his against @samostically to illustrate the technique @fjcr employed to break his strong opponent. Very well done for this #5 spot.
In 6th place is @lucianosky, a very strong young player who was among the best players of the last edition. He manages to position himself just a few points away from the top 5. Surely his participation would have improved greatly, but the connection issue did not allow him to complete the tournament in good shape so he was absent in 2 of the 8 rounds. With all this he made his way among the winners of the league. We hope that this situation can improve in the next championships. On behalf of the CB team we wish you the best of success.
@Pamboy27 from Nigeria, on the other hand, took 7th place. With only one absence during the entire championship, he managed to total 29 units. His performance remains close to 2000 points, and during the league he defeated top 5 players, proving that he has great potential and aspires to more. We would not be surprised to see this player climbing positions in future events.
To close the table of the eight best players of the event, @rosmarly ratifies its presence and serves as a representative of women's chess in Hive, obtaining the 8th place. After eight rounds of tough competition, the Venezuelan player is positioned among the best players in the blockchain. She even faced @tungphong, the leader of the championship, in several games and was able to take several points. Undoubtedly, a tough player eager to win and who has a style of play to watch out for.
The Most Beautiful Game
This is one of the special prizes established in the league rules, because we thought it was fun to rescue the beauty prize that is very traditional in international competitions. To choose it we tried to look at games of those players who did not make the top 8. We considered that it should be decently executed (without early or accidental blunders), that its result should not be a product of disconnection and that it should develop interesting chess concepts.

A wise man once said that there is something of an art to chess. We could not agree more. Since in all art the way to admire a work varies according to the observer, for some chess players the beautiful can refer to a tactical combination, the aesthetic exploitation of a strategic maneuver or, as @stayoutoftherz does in this encounter, to a positional display that controlled from very early on the forces of the enemy side.
It was no easy task to choose the game that best met the appropriate standards. This game undoubtedly captivated the Chess Brothers team. Both players showed a positional and theoretical understanding of the opening. It was a King's Indian that very quickly transposed to a Modern Benoni. It was very well played, as by the book. The white piece player was very confident in the course of this fight, always kept the pressure on the opponent and did not make any serious mistakes.

The game in general is very attractive. What pleased the analysis team most was the theoretical battle with the typical maneuvers and the simplification technique used by White to exploit the positional and material advantage. Black did not stand idly by and posed threats by playing on the black squares, even managing to equalize at a certain point. He insisted with a counterplay on the king's wing, but White's precise and elegant defense neutralized any hope on the black side.
From the above diagram it looks like Black is very active. However, the modest 33. Bg1! puts a stop to all the initiative of the second player. The g2 point is very solid and White's march on the queenside is unstoppable. In fact, at this point it is difficult to suggest a plan for Black's pieces. After a couple of simplifications the game was converted into a win for White.
The Greatest Upset
This is another special award intended to recognize the player who defeats an opponent with a much higher rating. It is always good to see some surprises, so this recognition is well deserved; in chess anything can happen. Well, this is the result:

That's right, #hivechess regular player @rodrook was able to break @lucianosky, with whom he had a rating difference of 840 rating points, the biggest gap in the entire league for the prize. Let's take a look at a key moment of their game where he got away with it!
At this moment, @rodrook, who has the black pieces, manages to get hold of a dangerous formation that put White at risk. After a few not so precise moves, however, Black ends up a piece down. However, @lucianosky could not realize his advantage as he had difficulties due to time pressure and ends up succumbing to the zeitnot.
How so? It happens to be an Arena tournament and @lucianosky berserked @rodrook, speculating that he could beat him this way, since the difference in ratings is abysmal. However, @rodrook is a tough nut to crack and he made sure to pose White as much trouble as he could think of, resisting the onslaught to finally get the win by time in a very defensible and difficult position for White to convert.
@rodrook had a quite interesting performance in the development of this second season, and won a few victories against players who outrated him by far. In fact, if there were two awards in this category, he would win second place as well, given that he also beat @tony1294 and this time in a resounding manner.
Way to go, @rodrook! Congrats on your resilient spirit and for causing such great upsets to such strong players.

Final Words

En buena lid concluye la 2da temporada de la Liga de Ajedrez Chess Brothers. Han sido ocho semanas de ajedrez de alta competición en la cual muchos jugadores se han sumado a nuestra iniciativa de masificar el ajedrez en Hive.
Para nosotros ha sido todo un honor contar con una comunidad súper activa y apasionada por el deporte ciencia. Es precisamente el título que llevó esta temporada Gens una sumus, que en latín quiere decir somos una familia, lo cual creemos que caracteriza a nuestro movimiento. Saber que cada domingo nuestra familia acudirá al compromiso del tablero online como fue planificado al principio de esta liga es de gran satisfacción para todo el equipo de CB.
Con ya tres meses de aprendizaje, la liga que se lleva a cabo todos los domingos continúa en asecenso. Entendemos que la clave del éxito es la constancia, y desde la primera jugada todo el equipo de trabajo se ha visto inmerso en el desarrollo de estas actividades, tratando de mejorar siempre en la medida de lo que sea posible, escuchando a la comunidad, aceptando las sugerencias, adaptándonos a cambios, en fin, toda una ayuda recíproca que hace de este evento una fiesta genial.
Un vistazo a los indicadores de éxito y los resultados alcanzados
La principal motivación para jugar estos torneos, en nuestro opinión, es la pasión por este deporte. Sin esa llamarada ajedrecista sería menos alentador desempeñar estos campeonatos. No obstante, tambien somos partidarios de que el esfuerzo y la preparación que tiene cada ajedrecista para posicionarse en los primeros lugares vale y muchísimo.
Es por ello que, en comparación con la anterior temporada, la lista de premiaciones fue extendida a los ocho primeros puestos más dos premios especiales. Con ello, hemos conseguido premiar al menos 11 usuarios de Hive, adjudicandoles a cada uno una merecida recompensa en Hive Dollars. Más adelante daremos a conocer estos resultados, pero creemos que el cambio ha sido exitoso ya que así hay más jugadores que pueden ser beneficiados en comparación con la primera temporada que premió 6.
Por su parte, fue un evento bastante prolongado que abarcó ocho semanas. Muchas cosas pasan en dos meses, pero por lo menos muchos jugadores adquirieron el hábito de participar de los domingos de ajedrez con Chess Brothers, de la mano con los otros torneos que la comunidad de ajedrez de Hive impulsa.
En todo este tiempo pudimos implementar distintas formas de juego en términos de tipo de torneo y control de tiempo. Incluso, a mitad de la liga, específicamente a partir de la ronda 5, todos los participantes pudieron votar por el control de tiempo y formato de juego de su preferencia, utilizando Dpoll, la aplicación de encuestas que corre en Hive. Creemos que esto ha estimulado la variedad y ayuda a eludir la monotonía, por cuanto cada encuesta tuvo buena participación, alcanzando incluso los 15 votos y muchísimos comentarios de discusión. En total, se disputaron los siguientes controles de tiempo y formatos de juego: Suizo 3+1, Suizo 3+2, Arena 3+0, Arena 4+2 y Arena 5+2 y Arena 3+0. Notamos que la comunidad quiso repetir Arena 5+2 y Suizo 3+2, esta última se jugó tres veces en total, puesto que también fue programada por la organización para una de las rondas iniciales. La preferencia no sorprende, pues es una forma de juego favorecida incluso por la FIDE.
Asimismo, el sistema de puntuación fue concebido de manera tal que beneficiara la competitividad y la constancia en los torneos y creemos que esos objetivos se han cumplido.
Así pues, el performance promedio de todos los torneos fue de 1969,125, la válida más fuerte en términos de rating fue la 8va ronda con 2066 puntos de performance promedio, y el rating promedio de los primeros 8 clasificados de todas las válidas fue de 2241,9. Esto se debe en parte a que la liga va más allá de Hive, aceptando a jugadores de Lichess que no necesariamente posean cuenta de Lichess. Muchos entusiastas de alto y bajo rating se unieron y contribuyeron a moldear estos resultados.
Según nuestras estadísticas, al finalizar la temporada pasada, la participación total fue de 62 jugadores, una cifra que es muy positiva para nosotros. Al cierre de la actual edición este número aumentó a 70, teniendo una asistencia promedio en cada ronda de 20 a 30 atletas.
Al tratarse de período de tiempo prolongado, teníamos la duda si al llegar a los últimos encuentros la participación se mantendría o disminuiría. Para nuestra sorpresa, la cantidad de participantes se mantuvo más o menos constante durante el desarrollo de la 2da temporada. Incluso tuvimos un pico de 40 ajedrecistas en la ronda 6. Sin duda, un número espectacular en términos de participación.
En esta misma onda, debemos decir que no es fácil acudir diligentemente a una cita todos los domingos durante 8 semanas, pero 8 jugadores han conseguido la asistencia perfecta. Estos son: @agreste, @pereu4uwatch, @rodrook, @rosmarly, @samostically, @stayoutoftherz, @tony1294 y @tungphong; definitivamente unos maratonistas del ajedrez.
Ellos fueron acompañados de otros 6 jugadores que casi consiguen la asistencia perfecta, participando en 7 ocasiones. Estos son: @eliaschess333, @eniolw, @fjcr, @kintokris, @lighteye y @pamboy27. Todos ellos son usuarios de Hive y jugadores de nuestra comunidad ajedrecística en esta blockchain. ¡Qué dedicación!
A su vez, notamos que, de los 70 participantes de la temporada, 25 jugadores poseen cuenta de Hive, lo que representa el 35,71% de la población. Esto es así ya que las puertas a nuestros torneos están abiertas para todo el mundo y los contabilizamos en nuestras tablas y estadísticas. De modo que apreciamos la participación de todos, aún cuando se hayan asomado una sola vez en la temporada.
En un lapso de 2 meses en la liga, toda esta gente logró disputar y acumular un total de 716 partidas de ajedrez. Lógicamente, el número de partidas fue mayor en los torneos arena, siendo la ronda 8 la que produjo el mayor número de encuentros con 113; nada mal. Seguramente estarán ansiosos de conocer a los máximos exponentes que dominaron esta 2da temporada. Sin embargo, nos gustaría enfatizar que para nosotros, todos los participantes son ganadores. El hecho de estar allí presente cada semana para demostrar tus habilidades en el tablero y divertirte es la mayor victoria. Como siempre lo hemos mencionado, la constancia es fundamental de cara al éxito.

Ahora bien, dado que @eniolw y @vjap55 han decidido no participar en la premiación, ceden sus puestos a los jugadores que les siguen y los premios quedan como sigue:

Como podemos apreciar, @tungphong ratifica el trono. Su participación ha sido tenaz y sin interrupción alguna. Tras iniciar la segunda mitad de la liga logró ganar cierta ventaja sobre su perseguidor más inmediato. Fue precisamente esa constancia que le ayudó a mantener el liderato. Claramente su fuerza de juego le otorga el lugar que hoy ostenta y esperemos que este extraordinario jugador siga acompañándonos en la ediciones futura.
Por su parte, @samostically, otro jugador asiduo en Hive, obtiene el subcampeonato de la 2da temporada en la que luchó arduamente por los primeros puestos y superar los altibajos en sus partidas. Logra este increíble resultado, mejorando así su actuación con respecto a la temporada 1. Un claro ejemplo de perseverancia y dura dedicación.
A su vez, @tony1294 completa el podio de los tres mejores jugadores de la liga. Con la medalla de bronce el jugador venezolano continúa desempeñando un ajedrez admirable. Supimos que en esta edición su juego se vio un poco afectado por las intermitencias de la conectividad a internet, afectando así el resultado en partidas claves de algunas rondas. No obstante, su fuerte persistencia le permitió conquistar el 3er lugar de forma indiscutible.
En el 4to lugar se lo lleva @kintokris, otro exponente de Nigeria que acumuló 42 puntos con una asistencia de 7 rondas. A pesar de que se ubica entre los primeros lugares, su performance está por debajo del su rating final, lo que indica que tuvo roce ante oponentes de un rating variado, puntuando lo suficientemente bien como para alzarse con la 4ta posición de manera solitaria.
@Fjcr cristalizó el 5to lugar con un performance que rebasa los 2100 puntos de rating, indicando así que a lo largo de toda la liga se mantuvo enfrentando a jugadores más fuertes con resultados positivos. De hecho, en uno de nuestros reportajes reseñamos una partida suya contra @samostically para ilustrar la técnica que @fjcr empleó para doblegar a su fuerte contrincante. Muy bien logrado este puesto número 5.
En el 6to lugar está @lucianosky, un joven jugador muy fuerte quien estuvo entre los mejores atletas de la edición pasada. Logra posicionarse a pocos puntos del top 5. Seguramente su participación hubiera mejorado en gran medida, pero el tema de la conectividad no le permitió completar en buena forma el torneo por lo que estuvo ausente en 2 de las 8 rondas. Con todo ello se hizo paso entre los ganadores de la liga. Esperamos que esta situación pueda mejorar en los proximos campeonatos. De parte del equipo de CB te deseamos el mejor de los éxitos.
@Pamboy27 de Nigeria, por su parte, se consagró con el 7mo lugar. Con solo una ausencia durante todo el campeonato, logró totalizar 29 unidades. Su performance se mantiene cerca de los 2000 puntos, y durante la liga derrotó a jugadores del top 5, demostrando así que tiene un gran potencial y que aspira a más. No nos extrañaría ver a este jugador escalando posiciones en futuros eventos.
Para cerrar el cuadro de los ocho mejores jugadores del evento, @rosmarly ratifica su presencia y funge de representante del ajedrez femenino en Hive, obteniendo el 8vo lugar. Tras ocho válidas de dura contienda, la jugadora de Venezuela se posiciona entre los mejores jugadores de la blockchain. Incluso en varias partidas enfrentó a @tungphong, el lider del campeonato, y pudo hacerse con varios puntos. Sin duda, una aguerrida jugadora con ansias de victoria y que cuenta con un estilo de juego del cual hay que tener cuidado.
La partida más bonita
Este es uno de los premios especiales establecidos en las bases de la liga, pues nos ha parecido divertido rescatar el premio de belleza que es muy tradicional en las competencias internacionales. Para escogerla tratamos de mirar partidas de aquellos jugadores que no entraron en el top 8. Consideramos que debía ser decentemente ejecutada (sin errores garrafales tempranos o accidentales), que su resultado no fuese producto de la desconexión y que desarrollara conceptos ajedrecísticos interesantes.
Tras una ardua discusión, consideramos que la partida más bonita de la 2da temporada de la Liga de Ajedrez Chess Brothers ha sido:

Un sabio dijo una vez que el ajedrez tiene algo de arte. No podíamos estar más de acuerdo. Dado que en todo arte la forma de admirar una obra varia según el observador, para algunos ajedrecistas lo bello puede referirse a una combinación táctica, la explotación estética de una maniobra estratética o, como lo hace @stayoutoftherz en este encuentro, a un despliegue posicional que controló desde muy temprano las fuerzas del bando enemigo.
No fue tarea fácil escoger la partida que mejor cumpliera con los estándares apropiados. Esta partida sin duda cautivó al equipo de Chess Brothers. Ambos jugadores mostraron una comprensión posicional y teórica de la apertura. Fue una India de rey que muy pronto traspuso a una Benoni moderna. Fue muy bien jugada, como de manual. El jugador de piezas blancas se mostró muy seguro en el transcurso de esta lucha, mantuvo siempre la presión sobre el rival y no cometió errores graves.

Lo que más agradó al equipo de análisis fue la batalla teórica con las maniobras típicas y la técnica de simplificación empleada por el blanco para lograr explotar la ventaja posicional y material. Las negras no estuvieron con los brazos cruzados y plantearon amenazas al jugar por las casillas negras, logrando incluso igualar en determinado punto. Insistían con un contrafuego en el ala de rey, pero la precisa y elegante defensa de las blancas neutralizó toda esperanza del bando negro.
En el diagrama anterior parece que las negras están muy activas. Sin embargo, la modesta 33. Ag1! pone freno a toda la iniciativa del segundo jugador. El punto de g2 está muy sólido y la marcha de las blancas en el flanco de dama es incontenible. De hecho, en este punto es difícil sugerir un plan para las piezas negras. Tras un par de simplificaciones la partida fue convertida en victoria para las blancas.
La mayor sorpresa
Este es otro premio especial previsto para reconocer al jugador que derrote a un oponente con un rating muy superior. Siempre es bueno ver algunas sorpresas, así que este reconocimiento está bien merecido; en el ajedrez cualquier cosa puede pasar. Pues bien, este es el resultado:

Así es, el asiduo jugador de #hivechess @rodrook pudo doblegar en esta partida a @lucianosky, con quien poseía una diferencia de rating de 840 puntos de rating, la brecha más grande en toda la liga. Echemos un vistazo a un momento clave de la partida.
En este momento, @rodrook, quien tiene las piezas negras, logra hacerse con una formación peligrosa que ponía en riesgo a las blancas. Tras unas cuantas jugadas no tan precisas, sin embargo, las negras quedan con pieza de menos. No obstante, @lucianosky no pudo concretar su ventaja pues tuvo dificultades debido a la presión del tiempo y termina sucumbiendo ante el zeitnot.
¿Cómo así? Sucede que al ser un torneo Arena, @lucianosky dió berserk a @rodrook, especulando con que podría vencerlo así, ya que la diferencia de ratings es abismal. No obstante, @rodrook es un hueso difícil de roer y se aseguró de plantearle al blanco cuanto problema se le ocurriera, resistiendo las embestidas para finalmente obtener la victoria por tiempo en una posición muy defendible y difícil de convertir para las blancas.
@rodrook tuvo un desempeño bastante interesante en el desarrollo de esta segunda temporada, y se hizo con unos cuantos triunfos ante jugadores que lo superaban en rating por mucho. De hecho, de haber dos premios de esta categoría, él ganaría el segundo lugar también, dado que también venció a @tony1294 y esta vez de forma contundente.
