5 Subs In The EPL From Next Season

Premier League clubs are set to agree to the 5 substitutions per game from next season if all goes to plan in this weeks meeting. This means clubs are able to use up to 5 subs in a game basically able to swap out half your playing squad if needed.

Sure it gives managers more options, but it's not as simple a chance as we might think. As anyone who followers the EPL knows certain clubs have far better teams due to financial backing. The so-called 'bigger' teams have been in favor of this move because it gives them an outsized advantage to use their expensively assembled squads while smaller teams won't have a bench that can compete.

The Premier League is the only division out of the top 5 European leagues to restrict substitutes but we all know the other leagues are heavily biased towards their big teams which is why it's always the same club or clubs winning the league.

Subs might help burn out for certain players of course, but I think that there should be a rule regarding match day squads to balance it out, like having a certain amount of homegrown or youth players on the bench.

This could help youngsters get more game time and not only favour the bigger teams who can now have more top players fielded per 90 minutes.
